Well this is rather frustrating. I wish it was made more clear in the description for this book that there are no instructions for creating an entire flower in this book. This book focuses on the details of making all the various parts of a flower for various types of flowers. I bought this book because it was the most recently published book, thinking it was the most current and up to date instruction for botanical water coloring from the artist/author. For full instructions on creating a complete flower/flower composition, you need to buy her other book called: "A-Z of Flower Portraits: An illustrated guide to painting 40 beautiful flowers in watercolour." I don't fault the author but rather the publisher, who should have made it clear that this is actually 1 book in a 2 volume book set. If I had known, I would have bought the other one. I am taking her online classes and wanted something in book form for reference with all the basics that I could study at my own pace, for which this book is very good at doing, however, it was a pretty big disappointment to learn that to put all the information together in a complete flower, I would have to buy another book! I am grateful that her monthly subscription fee for her online classes are exceedingly reasonable. I was also pretty disappointed with the quality of the reproduction of her watercolors in this book, the only high quality image is on the cover. For the supplies section in this book, you can get all that information for free in a free intro video for her classes on her website. If you already have a good grasp of the basics for botanical water coloring, I think you would probably like her other book more which I mentioned above.
I was so excited to receive this book yesterday. I am a collector of high quality instructional books. Although I have all of Billy's books and DVDs, I believe this is her best work yet! The smaller formatt compared to the others is better. She has poured all her knowledge into this book. So many writers put out repetitive books just to sell more. This book has so much new knowledge. The photography and printing is excellent. Every single page is exciting. There are no fillers. I have been following her online course at billyshowell.com for two years now. I thought maybe this book would be too basic for me. I found a lot to learn here. If you are brand new, you will get a good foundation for botanical painting, but, I have also found from taking the online courses, that much of her expert information on brush handling, paper, paint applications and mixing can be applied to all genres of watercolor painting. Although Ms. Showell confesses to loving pink the most, her mastery of the most important "neutrals" is unparalleled! As evidence, I would invite everyone to view her newest online tutorial, "Dried Seaweed". Anyone can "try it free". I am glad I have most of the items on her supply page already! Actually, the layout makes me want to do a painting of them.
I appreciate the very detailed descriptions of pretty much every piece of equipment (or thought process) that go into a watercolor painting. From pencils, paper, erasers, paints, and more (even sketching), it's all covered in common, easy to understand language with picture examples. The book is also filled with watercolor illustrations, for tons of inspiration and instructions.If I had one critical comment, it would be that while all of the above is perfect for aspiring watercolor painters, this is not a beginners book. The tutorials do have some depth and give some instruction on technique, but they are brief and the tutorial images are extremely small (less than 2x2 inches in most cases). It can be difficult to discern exactly what is happening at such a small scale, and there are some steps glossed or skimmed over from sketch to finished painting. As a beginner, I did find that a bit frustrating, but for inspiration and all of the first paragraph above, I still rate this 5 stars.I'm still on the hunt for the perfect beginning watercolor technique book, however.
Wow! Get ready to be amazed! I've bought a number of books on this subject and they pale in comparison. Even if botanicals isn't your thing...if you want to do realism with watercolor, this is yhe only book you'll probably need. Good on you, Billy! Detailed how to and why. Great technical reference book.
I have just about every botanical painting book available and this book tops them all. I am about 1/4 into the book right now. It is beautifully illustrated with color images of her painted flower examples and the teaching illustrations are beautiful as well. Each chapter of instruction is well written and easy to understand. This is a very practical and thorough botanical painting packed with information. I look forward to reading each chapter and practicing as I go. I would highly recommend this book!

This is a beautiful book and laid out nicely, with equipment/layout suggestions/explanations. I love Billy's style although I paint differently, but I believe one can always expand and learn from a variety of teachers. I would buy her other books but I suspect there is a lot of repeat. I am still making my way slowly and enjoying the book very much
I LOVE watercolor instruction books and inspiration for watercolor books and THIS is the best book I own! The directions are clear, the pictures exquisite, and her paintings are like NO OTHER!!! I have learned more from this book than any other sans a beginner book. I know about watercolors and have taken online classes of all sorts. The author, Billy Showell, I found out has a course that is wonderful with professional filming and the most detailed, no nonsense approach I have EVER seen. BUY THIS BOOK, YOU WON"T REGRET IT!!
