Christian Monks on Chinese Soil: A History of Monastic Missions to China

Review

"The history of Christianity in China will be a growing area of study in the coming years, when we will see China emerge as the largest Christian nation in the world. An important chapter of that history is the story of Christian monks in China, a chapter that until recently has not received sufficient treatment. Thanks to Matteo Nicolini-Zani, a monk of the community of Bose who has published a number of studies of Chinese Christianity, we now have a sound study of that history. Distinguished scholars Sophia Senyk of the Pontifical Oriental Institute and William Skudlarek of Saint John's Abbey have rendered Nicolini-Zani's original Italian text very readable, giving English readers access to a fascinating story of Christian mission and intercultural dialogue. I recommend Christian Monks on Chinese Soil to students of Chinese history, Christian missions, and monasticism, as well as to anyone interested in intercultural dialogue."Timothy P. Muldoon, PhD, Boston College"With this book, Nicolini-Zani reminds us again that the encounter between different cultures can happen not because they are existing in one space but because various connections, visible or invisible, concrete or abstract, beyond space and time, link them together."Liang Zhang, Catholic Books Review"Nicolini-Zani's work, rendered into fine English by the translators and equipped with an extensive bibliography, should long serve as a standard reference work for students of Christian monasticism in China, as well as a starting point for scholars wishing to explore one or another aspect more comprehensively."American Benedictine Review"An excellent introduction to the history of monasticism in China with all its complexities on issues of inculturation, interreligious dialogue, spirituality, and Christian mission."Mission Studies

I truly enjoy this author's style and the Jack Reacher series... I am now on book 7.... It's hard for me to put the book down once i get started... I would suggest starting at book 1 and proceeding with his books in order.... Particularly the first 3 or 4 books as there are some characters that carry forward in these books. And book 1 is a great intro as to who this Jack Reacher guy is... BTW, Tom Cruise playing Jack Reacher in the movies just doesn't cut it for me... Jack... 6'5".... 250 pounds... Need I say more....

What’s nifty about this story is that even though it’s the sixth book in the series it still ties in neatly with the first (Killing Floor). Turns out Reacher’s brother had a job investigating financial crimes with a girlfriend in the Secret Service, and now she’s come looking for Reacher to help diffuse an assassination attempt upon the Vice President of the United States. Well, this book is 550 pages long, so it’s not going to be as straightforward as the synopsis on the back cover makes it sound.Lee Child is skilled at writing a modern thriller. It can’t just be his short, direct sentences that do it. He can somehow imbue his stories with a sense of urgency and panic. Sometimes, I find myself reading faster as if that will help Reacher get out of his current predicament. Whatever the author is doing, he’s a master at it. These are hard books to take a break from, make sure you go to bed early so you can have extra time to read before sleeping, or you’ll be sorry.

Some spoilers below, read on at own risk.I like the Jack Reacher series. It's a predictable flow for each book, but you just have to accept that. He's a badass, always one step ahead of the bad guys, always the smartest guy in the room, figures things out before everyone else, etc. And, of course, he hooks up with some hot woman, gets into a serious relationship with her, and breaks up by the end. All that, no problem. Just accept that that's how it's going to go, and read on to see how it is handled this time around. In this book, Jack is a little TOO smart. A little TOO good. I think it was just pushed a little too far, while other things didn't make a lot of sense to me. For instance, the knowledge and skills of the would-be assassins don't add up considering their background. Also, in one attempt at making Jack seem so much smarter than everyone else was just off-base, and that had to do with the Beretta in the kitchen drawer. Most law enforcement or military folks I know advocate that a gun being used for self-defense should be loaded and ready to fire - that extra step of inserting the magazine, pulling the slide, etc - could be the difference between life and death. In this case, the Beretta was in the drawer with the mags next to it. A professional such as a secret service agent wouldn't have had it that way, and a military professional such as Jack wouldn't have considered it a mistake to have the bullets in the mag. I think BOTH would have kept the gun in the drawer, bullets in mag, mag in gun, ready to go. Not a big deal except that the whole idea becomes a major plot twist at the very end of the book.Anyway, it's a good book, I recommend reading it, there were just a few things that bugged me and made me think that the author was trying too hard to be clever.

Huge Reacher fan (Reacher Creature). While in real life much of what Reacher does to get himself in and an out of a jam couldn't/wouldn't really fall neatly into place, he's a great guy to root for! He's not the underdog--he's way too bug for that. But he believes in justice and the American way and fairness. He believes that if you hurt the weak you should pay for that. And he'll see to it that that happens.Speaking of helping the weak, that's how we meet Reacher in this book. Helping people is like Reacher's spidey sense. When he overhears there might be a woman in need, Reacher rushes in to save the day. Nevermind the fact that he's sticking his nose in to someone else's business...Reacher can't NOT help. This story is part of a rare 4-part series, so you'll have a better context for some of the characters and Reacher's journey if you start with 61 Hours. (I've read that one twice.) Once you start reading you won't want to put the book down. Then you're hooked for life!

I have been hooked on the Jack Reacher series since I saw the first movie and read the first action packed novel. Now that there is soon to be another Jack Reacher movie (Never go back) coming out soon I have begun to again read these novels again. I just finished reading Worth Dying for (A Reacher Novel) by Lee Child and loved it.I find it amazing that Lee Child can come up with original and unique Jack Reacher stories that keep you turning the pages. In this story it is winter and Jack happens to be at a bar in of all places Nebraska, where the wind rips across the flat barren fields which are filled with corn in the summer. This novel is packed with good and bad characters who Reacher handles in his own special way. What starts out as an alcoholic and almost drunk doctor who did not want to visit one of his patients until Reacher shames the doctor and Jack volunteers to drive the doctor’s car to see the beat up woman, turns into a complex murder mystery with bad guys running around all trying to kill Reacher. Jack was on his way to Virginia but the good people in this part of corn husker country wind up helping Reacher hide as they relate the corrupt tale of local and out of town thugs who have run rough shod over everyone in the area. I never like to reveal too much when reviewing a novel because it spoils it for the reader; however, I will let you know this much about this action packed novel. This is a fast moving tale and I found it amazing how in the dead of winter in this flat corn crop area of Nebraska Jack was able to elude the numerous bad guys as he solves the mystery of a missing girl, murder and a vicious sex slave smuggling ring. I found this book a fantastic read. Jack Reacher is my kind of freelance detective and investigator. I highly recommend this novel.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Pro-Systems Combatives Vol. 1,2).

I choose this rating for the simple reason that the book is well organized. filled with exhibits of sample forms from different states, and gets to the heart of the matter. The exercises focus your attention and are a good supplement to the more formal class setting. I have also found the constant references to the internet websites very useful in researching various areas of Elder Law. The cases chosen are an added benefit. We are giving this book a trial run in our class but from my perspective it is a keeper, and is likely to be used by other classes in the future, I would certainly recommend it.

meh, it's a text book, got it on time and as described

Got this along with Aspen College Series' "Basic Wills, Trusts, & Estate for Paralegals" and found them to be so helpful in my independent studies!

Terrific book!I'm 58. A few months ago I realized that my daily routine had become way too comfortable and, well, easy. I have a good job that I'm good at. I swim, do yoga or run every day. On weekends I garden, do projects and invite the kids over for Sunday dinner. I love my wife and we are very happy.I also wake up every morning with aches, pains and stiffness. I have a fairly short list of things I like to do and I feel I'm losing my mental edge. I'd just as soon walk away from a political argument than join it, and I give up on the extra hard Sudokus way too quickly.I'm thinking it's time to shake things up a bit, so I headed over to Amazon to search for ideas Turns out there are tons of books related to this. I found books on the aging brain, improving mental activity, and memory, books on improving the social life of empty nesters, books on middle aged "safe" exercise, books on" Happiness Theory" (really?), books on the importance of spirituality, and on and on.As I browsed Amazon, I realized that my real question was one of balance. Is there any guidance as to how much time I should be spending doing exercise, vs. Socializing, vs. challenging my mind, vs. spending time with family etc? Is there a recommended balance of activities that will properly exercise and stimulate my mind, body and spirit?Ultimately my Amazon browsing brought me to this book. It had just been published and there were no reviews but I bought it anyway based on the description. I just finished reading it and started to put its suggestions into daily practice. (learning Japanese and joining a choir). This is not a guru book filled with philosophy and feel-goodisms (although some Gurus are reviewed). This is a book full of concrete advice and exercises that promote a "hosistic blending of socializing, moving, thinking and creating".The prose is clear and straightforward. All in all, it's an excellent and fun read that you will likely find yourself going back to many times.

This is a great book if you live in the United States. I say this because much of the information pertaining to the activities contained in this book are places only found there. Saying that, the reader gets the general idea of substituting these places with one's own local places but the problem with that is actually knowing where these places are. That was half of the attraction that someone had already done the ground work for you. We all know when we get older that we need to involve ourselves with more activities etc but when you don't socialise as much this is a problem. What I do really like about this book is that it encourages people to invest time into a balanced lifestyle and it is this balanced message which I think will resonate with many people.

All the advice in this book is good, but the program is a bit too regimented for me. It also does not take into account that some of us are introverts and that, although some socializing is vital to them, it would actually spoil some of these activities. Spontaneous activities are pretty much left out, and that is unfortunate as well. But overall, it is a plan for a more balanced life in retirement.

This book was very good in inspiring me into an active retirement phase my life. Retirement is the a phase that most people only go into once in their life and this book provides guidance into unexplored activities. Like surviving in the corporate world, it's best to have guidance from colleagues and friends or from a book to start. Same goes for surviving retirement.

I am slowly reading your words having been diagnosed with MS 5 years ago. Within 18 months, I went from a cane, to 3 walkers, a wheelchair, scooter, and hopefully this great battery operated wheelchair.Yes,we do lose family and friends, but new friends and great books add SO MUCH!

I would buy the paperback version if I were redoing my purchase - for the book to truly be effective, you need to fill in the charts and ratings - depending upon the format of a paperback it would be easier. A spiral bound edition would be perfect.

This book is a good book to just have and refer toWe are both reading it and getting ideas plus the things wealready do have been validated as good ones....Aging is a daunting affair

Great inspiration for retired folks - wonderful resource for those just transitioning from career to retired - !

Review

“We are an intensely social species.  Everyone knows that.  But, from that basic truth, Matthew Lieberman mines a mother lode of insights that are both unexpected and genuinely worth using to better our lives.” -Robert B. Cialdini, author of Influence"Absolutely fascinating — necessary, even." -Brain Pickings“Compelling evidence is emerging that shows that, more than money or other extrinsic incentives, the human brain gets a hefty reward by forging connections with others. That evidence, much of it uncovered by Lieberman, a pioneer of social cognitive neuroscience, is presented in a collegial manner in this often-surprising account… With the details from study after study, many of them based on imaging scans that examine activity in certain parts of the brain, Lieberman’s book is perfect for Malcolm Gladwell fans who want to delve much deeper into the biology behind our social abilities. The investigations reveal the impressive social abilities we hold, often unappreciated but noticeable when lacking in others, and so ingrained they may influence our very sense of self.” –Booklist “Social reveals that our brains are made for connecting, not only for thinking. Matt Lieberman, a pioneering expert in social neuroscience, explains why fairness tastes like chocolate, why heartache can hurt more than a headache, and how we can use this knowledge to improve our lives at home, school, and work.” -Adam Grant, Wharton professor and bestselling author of Give and Take "Social is the book I've been waiting for: a brilliant and beautiful exploration of how and why we are wired together, by one of the field's most prescient pioneers." -Daniel Gilbert, professor, Harvard University, bestselling author of Stumbling On Happiness “Social is as full of surprising twists and insights as a Dan Brown novel (and as fun to read, too).  Social unmasks the secret to our success as a species - our fundamentally social nature - and explains the origins, brain bases, and everyday applicability of our social superpowers.”  -Kevin Ochsner, professor, Columbia University   "One of the most compelling and engaging books about how human beings really work that I've ever read. It literally changed how I see the world." -David Rock, director, NeuroLeadership Institute, author of Your Brain at Work   “At last, a book that really does put the social into social neuroscience, and, more importantly, does it in a way that layman and scientist alike can read with pleasure.” -Robin Dunbar, Professor, University of Oxford  "Vivid stories and cutting-edge neuroscience come together to explain just how connected we really are.  Lieberman's prose is fluid, and his ideas fascinating, making Social a must-read pleasure for anyone who cares about the  human condition and the science that reveals us as social beings." – Susan Fiske, Professor, Princeton University “This fascinating, beautifully written book brings the exciting research on our social nature and the brain to life” – Shelley Taylor, distinguished professor, UCLA, author of The Tending Instinct"Humans are exquisitely social. This is a beautifully written and compelling account of how and why this is the case, written by one of the world’s leading authorities on the social brain. Matthew Lieberman covers multiple areas of cutting edge research, including studies of primate social groups, the psychology of human love and friendship, and the brain basis of empathy and altruism. This captivating book will enthrall a very wide audience, from the general reader who has no previous knowledge of the brain to students and academics in the field of cognitive neuroscience and social psychology." - Sarah-Jayne Blakemore, Professor, University College of London"A highly engaging read from one of the pioneers of the emerging field of social cognitive neuroscience. By reviewing what has recently been discovered about unique human talents, such as self-control, mindreading, empathy, Lieberman presents a compelling case that the human brain is wired to be social.  Highly recommended for its accessible introduction to social neuroscience as well as its practical lessons for living more satisfying lives." -Todd Heatherton, Lincoln Filene Professor, Dartmouth College  "In this engaging book, Mathew Lieberman, one of the leaders and pioneers in social neuroscience, shows how and why our brains are wired to connect, how that influences what we think, feel, and do, and makes it clear why it matters." -Walter Mischel, Niven Professor of Humane Letters in Psychology, Columbia University  "The scientific field that became cognitive neuroscience began in the 19th century, strangely enough, with discoveries on the human brain's language processing.  Not long after, however, the isolated case of Phineas Gage tumbled onto the scene and announced, more than a century in advance, what would become social neuroscience.  In “Social”, Matthew Lieberman, one of the leaders of this now-established effort, provides a thoughtful and lively review of recent findings and of the implications for this important area of inquiry." -Antonio Damasio, USC professor and author of Descartes’ Error and Self Comes to Mind  From the Hardcover edition.

I had this professor for one of my college courses and this book was a required reading. It was a really easy read, but boring at times, and many of the claims/statements were super obvious. Like someone else had already mentioned, he didn't really support his research claims with extensive experimentation (aside from the fMRIs) nor did he talk about the perspective of introverts and people who aren't overly social (and don't want to be), so overall I personally found it to be a very superficial read.

Psychology, sociology and anthropology have been dominated by authors and theories that can be described kindly as “imaginative.” Lieberman here outlines recent developments in neuroscience that finally offer the hope of understanding the connections of mind to society in a way that is authentic and perhaps even practical. Highly recommended.

So my background is in therapy, and am always looking for books to enhance my understanding of human nature. This is one of the best books I've read, and feel the implications discussed in this book are some of the most important we need to be aware of in appreciating who we are. The author made a persuasive case with this book that our social connections really make or break us. There was just so much good information in this book that I see myself rereading it over the years to fully internalize and understand what to do with this important information.

Matthew Lieberman has brought together so much science on why we do what we do and feel how we feel. This was a fascinating book on the field of social cognitive neuroscience. So well written. Anyone with an interest in the human brain will love this book.

Read the first few pages and this book and it is mind blowing...i am a foreigner living in the US and one of the things i have struggled with is blending in and building solid relationships with people, for different reasons including my accent, cultural differences and lack of enough commonality. Social pain is just as real as physical pain, and the author does an excellent job of demonstrating ...can wait to finish the rest

The author is very knowledgeable on the subject and the studies he presents are interesting. I wish he would go into more detail with some of the studies that he talks about. While some of the neuroscience findings are surprising, the ultimate conclusion that humans have a social brain is not. I would still recommend this book.

Very readable book on how humans are hard-wired for connection and how that impacts all aspects of our lives. Not overly clinical or technical but comprehensive, and an easily-digestible writing style. Fully recommend if you're trying to understand the human condition and/or psyche at a deeper level.

An amazing up-to-date explanation of how we relate. For a future edition, and as a carer of my wife with Alzheimer's disease, I would like Matthew to consider a chapter on sustaining relationships when a person has advanced dementia.
