In Love and Other Consolation Prizes, a young Chinese-American boy is sold by his mother, herself a prostitute, in order to provide him with a better life. This was during the time of famine in China. When Yung Kun-ai (later known as Ernest Young) boards a freighter bound for the United States he is looking forward to a better life. But that isn't what's to be. He barely escapes with his life from the freighter and washes ashore in Seattle where he is taken to a shelter. After bouncing from place to place. He finally lands at a boys school he is beholden to Mrs. Irvine, his benefactress. But when he becomes a bit rebellious she takes him to the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, treats him to a day at the fair, before providing him as the prize in the daily raffle. That's right, he's raffled off and won by Madame Flora, owner of a house called the Tenderloin in the red-light district. There Ernest meets two young girls, Maisie and Fahn (a Japanese girl who was on the boat with him years earlier). The three form an unbreakable bond that will last until their elder years. Ernest ends up married to one of the girls when the Tenderloin closes but the reader doesn't learn who he chose until almost the end of the book.I loved this story! The juxtaposition of the AYP Exposition in 1910 with the Seattle World's Fair of 1962 provides a wonderful backdrop to the story. The author weaves Ernest's childhood with his later years in a spellbinding story. The characters are colorful, rich, and full of life. Exquisite details of the times and places pull the reader into the story and take him/her on a journey of depth and intrigue. The end is a beautiful twist to the story that this reader did not see coming. I found it difficult to choose a favorite character from the lot but I believe my heart belongs to Fahn in the end. You'll have to read this for yourself to find out if you agree with my choice.

I will be very surprised if I ever see anything by Jamie Ford that deserves less than the maximum five stars. What impressed me most about LOVE and Other Consolation PRIZES is is how wonderfully he shows us the good in the "bad" people and the bad in the "good" people, forcing us to rethink which is which and to what extent, and to wonder if either classification is really appropriate.Are the two who find out they were born out of wedlock any lesser persons on that account? Certainly not! That is about the phoniest excuse I have ever heard of for putting someone down!Who is a better friend to Earnest, the "good" Mrs. Irvine or the "bad" Flora Nettleton? Who is a better friend to the prostitutes in the Tenderloin?Jamie Ford has given us a wonderfully engrossing story, full of both sadness and joy, which forces us to notice that even the "bad" people have virtues and even the "good" have faults. Perhaps it will inspire us to think more charitably about our fellow citizens. It should also inspire you, if you haven't already, to read his wonderful first novel, HOTEL on the CORNER of BITTER and SWEET (five stars ++) and his excellent second, SONGS of WILLOW FROST (five stars).

I love historical fiction and nonfiction. Jamie Ford is such a great, emotional, heart-warming story teller. I hate the fact that I have other responsibilities and can't just sit and read the entire book! I'm over halfway through it and am enjoying it immensely. In fact, it will be given as Christmas presents to many this year!

I have loved all of Jamie Ford's books and this one is no exception. It is a wonderfully told story flipping from the early 1900's to 1962 covering two Seattle World's Fairs and a mixed race Chinese boy now man named Earnest Young. It is a must read.

From his first book to this latest entry his works strike my heart in a most lyrical way. I cannot recommend his books enough to do them justice. If you know Seattle and it's rich and often tragic Asian history....his works are for you and all of us.

Jamie Ford never disappoints. I thought I would never like a book as much as I liked "The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet," but I loved this just as much. It never ceases to amaze me what people can endure, and the characters in this novel have to overcome some horrific events to find love. Ford writes a compelling story about characters you come to love.

Jamie Ford is a very special writer and has written three wonderful books. Each one has grabbed my heart, taught me things I did not know about ;and told me a compelling story with characters I will always treasure as special friends. The story is excellent and suits those of us who have compassionate hearts and an interest in history of our country. The writing is so excellent that one will always remember the characters he develops so fully.

A beautiful story that brings life to many unknown histories of early Seattle. Friendship and love overcome the harshness of early 20th century racism. A fascinating story, which makes one want to know more about the emerald city.

This course takes some commitment and work- - there's a book, workbook, and devotional book, plus a course DVD. We asked the class to commit to attending all the sessions as far as possible. The challenge for us was that each session was planned for 1.5 hours, so we had to figure out how to split it up for shorter classes. But most of the material was eye-opening, especially in our evangelical context in which we are inclined to view emotion as an iffy source of mostly questionable choices. EHS reminds us that not only are our emotions part and parcel of what and who we are as human beings in God's image, but that God may speak to us through our emotions, and we need to recognize, acknowledge, and respond to our emotions in the right way - examine and triage, as it were. EHS tries to get us to slow down and, first of all, "be" - be with God. Spend time with God. Be silent before him in order to receive, but also just to enter more deeply into relationship with him. Let go, trust more, let your actions and ministry flow out from this being and depth.EHS also helps us deal with "The Wall" - events or seasons when we are undergoing a period of intense struggling with life and faith - reminding us that these are expected, and, if we can push through them, treasures await on the other side, not least of all of which is a closer relationship with God.I felt the least helpful exercise was genogramming our family tree, but maybe that was because I don't know enough about my family to do so. It will probably be helpful to those who do know enough to complete it with more detail. Also, the emotional maturity evaluation on their web site needs fixing - the "results" were far too broad; more granularity is needed. As it was a couple of months ago, it looked like it was just calculating an overall score and lumping you into large categories, then saying what you're like based on every attribute of that category.In the end, though, this was a great course with many life lessons and skills to consider. One participant urged us to teach this to the teens, said she wished she had been taught this material when she was younger. I agree, it's a course everyone should take.

The series of three books contains excellent information and topics for discussion and healing of emotional "baggage". What I like best about the course is the insight and depth of resources that relate to each concept as it is clearly explained. What I would recommend for enhancement of the course would be to combine the workbook and devotional into one book because the devotional has you consider question on how certain concepts relates to your life, and the workbook brings up many relevant topics and then has you write the answers to the questions; consolidation would make it easier for us to track our thoughts by providing more simplicity and continuity.

This is a book for all believers to read. Far too often in Christian circles giftings are promoted when character and emotional health are lacking. Author Scazzero shares vulnerably about his own lack of emotional health. Unless we are emotionally healthy, we cannot be spiritually healthy. I am in a small group that is studying this material. I highly suggest the book, workbook and devotional books.This material WILL change your life - for the better.

This is my first book written by Easwaran. I loved the contemporary writing style to explain ancient wisdom, demonstrating timelessness of truths. There are so many mental models and highly visual metaphors that describe life. What was striking was the absence of organized religion. These truths can be read by followers of any faith and mapped to their own religious writings. The book further demonstrates what the great men and women of the world have been trying to tell us, through different religions and metaphors. A must read for anyone in the quest for what is beyond this everyday humdrum of life.

In all his books Eknath Easwaran is able to engage the reader in the most profound truths of our existence by making them accessible to our current era and applicable to our daily lives. Easwaren books are always worth reading. They contain good translations [I am not equipped to say whether they are the most authentic] and wonderful introductions that inform novices and somewhat advanced readers about the essence and philosophical envelope of the translated text that is about to follow. Ir would hard to believe anyone, with eve nthe slightest appropriate mindset, would not profit from reading this book.Finally, the book, like other is in the series, is very reasonably priced.

loved this audio book i got alot of insight into myself and others from this book.the narrator has a good voice and the music is a nice addition to each chapter. bought another book by mr easwaran and it is just as informative and interesting. if you like philosophy this is a good intro to indian teachings.

This is the first Easwaran book I read and it truly is one of the greatest books I have encountered. No one else comes close to vivid and clear story telling in a spiritual book. This is truly a classic and Eknath Easwaran's legacy as a great spiritual teacher will live on for generations to come. Concepts for readers new to Indian mysticism are wonderfully brought to life by Easwaran and bridges modern psychology and ancient spirituality. This book, along with Easwaran's other two classics on Indian spirituality, is a must read for anyone wanting to explore and understand the spiritual life.

Eknath Eswaren has a wonderful grasp of his own Hindu tradition and also understands the teaching of the great mystics and saints from all the great religions. In 1996, real estate entrepreneur and billionaire, Robert Bigelow (Bigelow Aerospace) bought a 460 acre ranch in northern Utah, from a “besieged” ranching family, the Gormans. The ranch, and entire Unitah Basin, had a history (some locals say as far back as 15 generations) as an epicenter of paranormal activity including unknown entities and tales of other dimensions. Over several years, the Gorman family reported phenomena that included glowing orbs, UFOs, animal mutilations, unknown creatures, poltergeist-type events, and many other inexplicable incidents that defied their understanding of known reality. Wow. They were eventually “scared” enough to leave.Bigelow wanted some answers to some "big questions" and bought the ranch, not as an investment, but so a team of scientists / investigators (NIDS) could conduct research. The book chronicles the work of the NIDS scientific team (including Jacques Vallee, Hal Puthoff, Col. John B. Alexander, among others) and represents a clear and precise testament to the events that caused so much wonder and bemusement.Something unusual lurks on this land and this book is downright scary. Although the book creates more questions than answers, it is entirely possible that the explanation for the paranormal (many times hostile) activity at “Skinwalker Ranch” is beyond our realm of comprehension.Arthur C. Clark once said, "An advanced civilization's actions would seem like magic to us". Ain't it the truth. If you love a good sci-fi mystery like I do, then this book is for you.

A few months ago, one of my favorite Podcast stations did a three part series regarding Skinwalker ranch. I was so intrigued by the saga, that when the hosts repeatedly referenced this book - I knew I had to read it.The book exceeded expectation. Couldn't put it down. Regardless of ones personal level of skepticism on matters of the paranormal; it's written in such a way that you can scarcely stand living without an explanation. Perhaps that's what piques an interest in the paranormal for many.The chronicle of events at the Utah ranch are retold with respect for accuracy, while using creative language and imagery. I read the entirety in two days, and felt an unexpected sadness when I'd finished it. Science may never be able to prove, conclusively, that anything "other worldly" took place here - but it's a riveting story nonetheless.

I'm glad I read this book and it has many fascinating scenes, but I'm only giving it 3 stars, rather than 4, because ultimately it provided no "answer" as the blurb seemed to promise it would. That may be an unfair rating and I could easily give it 4 stars, but there were also several anecdotes that left me hanging, with questions about what happened next that it seems the author could have followed up on further. Such as when the author mentions a related story in which a witness sees several UFOs land on a lawn and then leaves it at that without telling us what happened next. In the main story of the subject ranch there are also details mentioned that could have been fleshed out more for the reader, especially involving the poltergeist-like phenomenon abouthousehold objects being moved around. The end of the book does include various hypotheses -- all very thought-provoking -- as to possible explanations, including the current belief by modern physicists that parallel universes actually exist.

This is an important book. It is well-researched and well-written, but it's chief virtue is that it convincingly reveals aspects of our "reality" that most people never experience and therefore never recognize. Most readers will see Hunt for the Skinwalker as a titillating adventure into spooky events that exist on the fringe of daily life and then only happen to a tiny minority of people who happen to get or put themselves in the way of such events. What Kelleher and Knapp are presenting is a whole new perspective on our reality that is supported by the main theories of quantum mechanics. Kelleher is explicit about this. It's one of his major conclusions drawn from his experiences at the Skinwalker Ranch. Telepathy, teleportation, multi-dimensional creatures, both beast-like and humanoid, portals into other universes, UFOs, distortions of time and space, all have been experienced directly by both owners and investigators of the property. Kelleher's team of investigators, composed of scientists and a journalist, attempted to validate or disprove reports of such occurrences on the ranch on the basis of investigation conducted according to scientific protocols. They both failed and succeeded.Most of their proof was the result of first-hand experience and direct observation. Their failures came about from the simple fact that what they were investigating did not conform to the demands of the scientific method. Odd occurrences were not repeatable and could not be measured. They could not be reproduced under laboratory conditions. At times, the investigators' frustrations are laughable simply because they were the result of naive expectations. The "intelligence" with which they were dealing was far and away more clever and elusive than their scientific approach allowed. It is to Kelleher's credit that he did not dismiss what he experienced or try to rationalize it away in the service of common sense and everyday practicality. What he saw and felt at Skinwalker Ranch was truly Weird and completely uncommon. Yet Kelleher had the insight to perceive that the anomalies he experienced and that were reported to him by reliable witnesses were "real" and revealed a side of our universe, our world, that we seldom encounter. What the experience showed him was that we exist within a reality that is more complicated, extensive, surprising, and scary than we can possibly imagine. Perhaps his investigation and that of his team will begin to reorient the prevailing mindset and prepare it for a major paradigm shift although Kelleher is well aware that, based on past performance, such a shift could take hundreds of years.
