The Time of Their Lives: The Golden Age of Great American Book Publishers, Their Editors and Authors, by Al Silverman

From Publishers Weekly

From upstarts like Barney Rosset's Grove Press to stalwarts like Harper (in various incarnations) under the decades-long direction of Cass Canfield, the great houses of what Silverman sees as publishing's heyday are nostalgically portrayed, from the end of WWII through the early 1980s. Silverman, former longtime head of the Book-of-the-Month Club, calls his book a love letter to editors, and though he's frank about people's foibles (like Alfred and Blanche Knopf's mercurial tempers), the tone is largely sentimental. Based on interviews with all the principals, he recounts feats of editorial genius, like how Tom McCormack made All Things Great and Small a blockbuster, which also made St. Martin's a publishing force. And there are stories about the ones that got away (Simon Michael Bessie passed on Lolita), the struggles of women to move up the editorial ladder and the dissolution of great editorial teams as money got tight and houses were sold. It's difficult to see the book's appeal to industry outsiders, but for insiders in a difficult publishing era, it's a delight to share these recollections of the days before Wall Street ruled Publishers Row. Review

“Of course, Al Silverman is both a ‘bookman’ par excellence and also the ultimate publishing insider, so it almost goes without saying that he is exactly the right person to write the story of book publishing since the Second World War, in the now bygone age of independent publishers and bigger-than-life editors. With world-class total recall, a clear eye, and a nice sense of humor, he brings back to life the publishers, the authors, the agents, and the editors who have filled his life, and whose personalities, often odd and marvelous, make his book a must for anyone who loves books and the world of book publishing.”---Michael Korda, author of Charmed Lives, Another Life, and Ike

I keep picking this up and reading parts of it over. I know some of the people who starred in publishing during this time and have heard about many more of these greats in the business. Whether you know a lot or a little, I think you will enjoy it if you are a writer, a publisher--and certainly, if you are an editor. The stories are great, and highly portable since they can be put down by the chapter as if they were short stories on their own. You have to care about this era AND the companies that put the names of many favorite authors in lights. If you did or do, you will very much enjoy it!

Anyone who loves books and publishing has to read this chronicle about America's postwar publishers. It is a story of personalities in conflict, both the people who wrote the books and those who brought them to the world. The book is based on interviews. Most of the entries are in the words of the publishers and editors or those who worked with them. A wonderful book, inherently fascinating and important in understanding the way publishing worked at its zenith.

The author has had a long and distinguished career in American publishing, including being president of the Book-of-the-Month Club and an editor, and seems to know personally about everybody engaged in American publishing between 1946 and the early 1980's. It is his contention that the post-war period until the early 1980's was at least as much a golden age of publishing as were the 1920's and 1930's with figures such as the legendary Max Perkins. Whether or not one agrees entirely with this assertion, the book does focus upon an extremely fascinating period and group of folks. The author simply went out and interviewed 120 "eyewitnesses" who had been engaged in publishing during this period at a variety of publishers: Knopf, Atheneum, Viking, Doubleday, Harper, and Little Brown to name just a few are discussed in individual chapters. The major paperback houses also are included. Because the author was interviewing his "own", he is just wonderful at filling out his pictures of what publishing was and how it operated during this period with insiders' perspectives. My only problem with the book, which despite its nearly 500 page length moves quickly, is that it is hard to keep all the large cast of characters and companies straight as you pass through the chapters. I also longed for a bit more of an explanation of exactly how editors "edit." His portraits of some key players, such as Alfred A. Knopf, Robert Gottlieb, and George Braziller, add enormously to the richness of the narrative. A small bibliography and some interesting photographs are included, as well as a solid index. A valuable book that is also quite interesting to read.

Discovered a lot of interesting facts about the publishing business. It took a lot of talent, know how and hard work to survive and stay in the black ink. I love to read just thought it would be interesting to see how it all starts and what's involved from writer to the finished product.

Anyone interested in the history and operations of the book publishing world from the 40's to the modern era should read this book. Learn how the major houses were built and who lead them, how they brought on their best talent and how some lost them! Their rejections are always more interesting than their bestsellers :)

Very well written, informative and enjoyable. A view of bookpublishing unseen before.

loved it

This is an interesting book written by someone who was an insider during the golden age of American publishing (1946-1984). Silverman - impressively - gained access to the living rooms and offices of 120 major figures in the book industry from that era to discuss their life and times. Lots of interesting nuggets such as “Bennet Cerf never took meetings.” And “after graduating summa cum laude from Columbia, Peter Mayer spent five years driving a taxi.” A bit of irony is that in a book written by an editor about editors there are a couple of typos such as one on page 426

Recipe from Giada at Home: Stuffed Baby Peppers Makes 4 to 6 servings My mother always loved to serve stuffed vegetables; she stuffed zucchini, potatoes, onions, and, of course, all kinds of peppers. It may have been her way of getting us to eat our vegetables, but we loved them so much we ate them right out of the fridge the next day. I’ve used pancetta in the filling, but this is an easy recipe to vary and you could certainly substitute ground beef, sausage--almost anything savory that you like. These taste better the longer they sit, so they make great leftovers. Ingredients Vegetable oil cooking spray 2 tablespoons olive oil 3 ounces thinly sliced pancetta, finely chopped 1/2 medium onion, finely chopped 3/4 cup whole-milk ricotta cheese 1/3 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese 1/2 cup frozen petite peas, thawed Salt and freshly ground black pepper 24 (2- to 3-inch long) baby peppers Place an oven rack in the center of the oven and preheat the oven to 350°F. Spray a rimmed baking sheet with vegetable oil cooking spray. Set aside. In a medium skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the pancetta and cook, stirring frequently, until brown and crispy, 5 to 7 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, remove the pancetta and drain on paper towels. Add the onion to the pan and cook until translucent and soft, about 5 minutes. Set aside to cool for 10 minutes. In a medium bowl, combine the onion, pancetta, cheeses, and peas. Season with salt and pepper. Using a paring knife, cut 1/2 inch from the stem end of each pepper. Remove the seeds and veins. Using a small dessert spoon, fill each pepper with the cheese mixture. Place the filled peppers on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 15 to 18 minutes, until the peppers begin to soften and the cheese is warmed through. Cool for 10 minutes. Arrange the peppers on a platter and serve.

Although I would switch out some of the Italian ingredients for ones that are more familiar, these recipes aren't so challenging that a person feels they can't do them. I especially loved the personal touch that Giada brings to the book. Her personal advice on most of the dishes are insightful and helpful. Really appreciate this one!

I've slowly become a fan of Giada and of her shows on the Food Network. When I heard a book was forthcoming based on her "Giada at Home" series, a show that I've used to draw many meals from, I immediately pre-ordered. First of all, I think she's evolved marvelously as a cook as this book demonstrates. While she does incorporate more of her California influenced cuisine, there are also plenty of classic Italian recipes which she clearly marks to distinguish one from the other. Several of the recipes have been used on multiple occasions in my household(Pea Pesto Crostini, Pasta Ponza, Caponata Panini) and one has become of my favorite go-to dishes (Spaghetti with Olives and Breadcrumbs). Also, while some ingredients aren't easy to find outside big cities, Italian food is very flexible - a point which Giada often makes on her show, pointing out acceptable substitutions to certain ingredients. This is a welcome addition to the Italian food loving home cook who likes good, unfussy food with plenty of taste.

I didn't really find much that excited me in this recipe book. I was hoping for Italian home cooking which this really isn't. If you are a Giada fan and want to see what she cooks at home, this would be a better fit for you than me.

I received this a Christmas gift. Since then, my hubby and I have cooked several of the recipes in here. They have all been fantastic. I'm always pleased with how healthy AND tasty Giada's recipes are, and this cookbook doesn't disappoint. The pictures in the cookbook are great - I always like to see what the dish will look like in the end. This book is packed with excellent recipes that are full of flavor, fairly easy to cook and almost always healthy. The only downside to this cookbook is that some of the dishes call for a large number of recipes, which is always daunting for people that don't cook as often. Also, she tends to call for some ingredients that are more expensive or harder to find - but only in a few recipes. Overall, this is a great cookbook!

I just received this book a few weeks ago and love it! The pictures inside are very colorful, the pages are all glossy and thick, and the recipes are simple. If you've watched season one and two of Giada at Home, alot of the recipes from those two shows are in this book. If you're a person who has to watch someone cook the recipe instead of reading the recipes, you should get her DVD set, season one and two. They are worth the purchase and the recipes are exactly the same as what's inside this book.

Love. Her. Recipes. N. Show

She is one of my favorite chefs. I didn't like this book as much as her others, but there's always good stuff in there. And she makes it simple, with ingredients I can find. Here in my area there are no fishmongers nor spice shops, so I'm glad to see cookbooks like hers.

Very good presentation of recipes. Light and bright and makes you want to try recipes.

What a charming run. This collection of Zatanna comics is bundled together with sturdy graphic novel quality binding and thick pages, so it'll stand nicely on a bookshelf - you'll definitely want to place it there afterwards, because this thing has a lot of good to offer.Without spoilers, this Zatanna collection features multiple story arcs with a good range of tone and themes. Zatanna's character is versatile in that she can plausibly interact with heroic DC staples like Batman and Superman, or venture into DC's grungy underbelly and work with characters like John Constantine, or other Vertigo branded identities. Mostly, the stories here are of her independently doing her own thing. After all, she is the star of these comics.Zatanna's stories are often raunchy, amusing, and very weird. She's a character of immense power and capabilities, but her humanity has her committing acts of questionable morality, even if not for nefarious reasons. Timely additions of single and double-paged full panel add dramatic emphasis and show off top-shelf artistry when appropriate. Teens and adults alike will find lots to love in these pages. Believe in magic!

Zatanna is, and I do not think I am exaggerating here, the most under-utilized character DC has to offer. A stage magician, and a REAL mage, Zatanna is something rare in the DC universe, a character whose work-hero balance falls more on her professional life. Zatanna has always been one of my favorite characters, so I was glad DC finally gave her a full collection.Zatanna live in LA, California, performing to a sold out crowd every night. But she's still a superhero, and in this collection she has run ins with her ex-boyfriend John Constantine, mobster mage Brother Night, her cousin Zachary Zatarra, and many more. Zatanna is such a fun character, and I was happy to see the artwork kept up with the possibilities Zatanna's power set provides. I only wish there could have been more.

Zatanna has always been in my top three when it comes to super heroines. While she started as a whimsical character, she grew over the years to the mistress of magic most know her as today. This volume contains some of her best stories. A tsum rof reh snaf!

Okay, I use this collection a lot in my fanfic writing because it gives a really good base of Zee and her personality and powers, so if you are looking for a useful feel of our favorite magician this is a great book for you. Read each story a few times to really enjoy all the little details of her. I found like in all collections like this, some artists are more cartoony, not a fan of Rick Mays here, but the more realistic and traditional artists that make up the majority of the volume really do a beautiful job at capturing her grace and power, my favorites being Cliff Chiang, Jamal Igle, Jesus Saiz. The stories themselves are fun and interesting, with those neat spins that make her world so intriguing, the intersection of the ordinary and the magical. I like how she is portrayed, sometimes temperamental and wickedly accurate in handing out justice but mostly genuinely kind, hard working, and swift thinking. She is one of the most human feeling supers out there and her stories depict both the crazy cosmic stuff heroes take on as well as the very ordinary crap and dull common stuff everyone endures. One of my favorite things is how she uses her brains, her physical skills, her years of experiences, and her powers together to deal with her problems rather than rely only upon her magic access. It makes her feel like what a real magician would actually be like. Glamour and climatic balancing out with ordinary and personal. The stage and everything behind it, to give a sense of wholeness to her. I really recommend you get this volume if you want a good realistic sense of Zee as a real feeling person.

This is my first time reading anything about Zatanna but have been interested in the mystical side of super heroes. They always seem to exist in their own universe like Justice League Dark and so I thought I'd dip my toe into this collection. The collection is pretty random. I've been buying collections of consecutive issues but this was a collection of loosely related issues. Brother Night showed up multiple times which I wasn't sure if thst meant that he was Zatanna's main rival. That would be extremely disappointing since he didn't seem that interesting. The story arcs that occur in this (some stories are just one-offs) are great but don't last too long. It felt like watching a mini-series versus a season of something. That was underwhelming since I wanted more interaction, payoff and dialogue in the story and with the characters. It's worth the read just for the brain pain I had to endure deciphering the constant spellcasting. It seems like a cheap gimmick at first but I found it to be endearing pretty quickly. Plus, there's one story that puts a really clever twist on the backwards spell casting.

I've been consuming the media created by Paul Dini for decades. His stories about the Mistress of Magic so not disappoint.

I bought the digital copy. At first, I was really hoping the entire book wasn't going to be in that terrible art style in the first chapter but it wasn't. Story-wise, it was very enjoyable. Most definitely a five star.

This book offers the reader some truly fantastic tales and shows us Satan's in her sensuous delights. Paul Dini is a master of words and tales.Read this!!!! Dear shot!!

From the Inside Flap

All of us are born with distinct personality traits. Some of us live for crowds and parties; others seek solitude and time for quiet reflection. Some of us are naturally pushy, while others are content just to get along. We don't pick and choose these traits; they're just part of the way we're made. For in the womb God doesn't merely mold our body; He also gives us the temperament that, all our days, colors our understanding, guides our choices, and serves as the foundation of our moral and spiritual life. Ancient philosophers identified four basic temperaments, and over the centuries, countless wise souls have used these four to understand human nature. Now comes The Temperament God Gave You, the first Catholic book on the subject in 70 years. Here veteran Catholic counselor Art Bennett and his wife Laraine provide an accessible synthesis of classical wisdom, modern counseling science, and Catholic spirituality: a rich understanding of the temperaments and what they mean for you and for your family. Drawing on decades of study, prayer, and practical experience, Art and Laraine show you how to identify your own temperament and use it to become what God is calling you to be: a loving spouse, an effective parent, and a good friend. Best of all, they give you a Catholic understanding of the four temperaments that will bring you closer to God and help you discover the path to holiness that's right for you. Peace. Happiness. Holiness. You'll find yourself growing in each of these qualities as you come to understand -- and learn to use as you should the temperament God gave you.

I can't recommend this highly enough. I learned about temperaments several years ago, and have understood myself, my husband, and all kinds of people and relationships much better ever since. I think temperaments get to a much deeper level of personality than Myers-Briggs, and because there are only 4 basic types, anyone can achieve a deep understanding without always referencing books. I often teach temperaments to friends, and it's great to see their satisfaction as they realize why they have always reacted the way they do. If you want enough self-awareness to laugh at your personality as it causes trouble, this is for you.I believe I have read all the available temperament resources, and this is the best. It treats every temperament evenly, and emphasizes that each is good. There are a lot of anecdotes, and it is full of practical advice for dealing with each temperament and with each combination in various relationship types. It is accessible enough for a high school student and rich enough for a PhD.I also have the spouse version, which is a good addition to this one, but not as deep and not really necessary once you understand the basics. This is also better than, though very different from, The Emotions God Gave You.A final note : as the name implies, the authors are Christian, and advice for prayer is sprinkled occasionally throughout before it gets its own chapter. But the concepts are not Christian intrinsically, and the book would still be very helpful, though occasionally irritating, if you set all such references aside.

This book will help you better understand yourself and others. Once you've read it you won't be able to see people the same way again - things become quite a bit more clear and less frustrating once you understand the temperaments driving people's behavior. Makes forgiveness far easier.

This is an easy read! It was quite interesting to find out about the different temperaments: choleric (Type A), melancholic (picky), sanguine (salesman), and phlegmatic (couch potato). I took the quiz and tested as primarily choleric with melancholic, which I believe is accurate. Especially good are the sections that compare how different temperaments get along together. I found it to be true to life, especially the description of the role reversal that happens when a choleric woman marries a phlegmatic man.

Very enlightening. A little slow getting started but once in, the information is very good and should be a requirement for relationships of any kind. Very practical advise in getting along with your spouse and children who may have different temperaments. Better help than all the years of therapy and counseling. Has helped me appreciate the God given differences in our home rather than be frustrated by them. Only down side for me is that I am not Roman Catholic and there is a bit of the religious sprinkled throughout. Definitely not a reason to miss out on the great information, though.

I read about myers-briggs, the enniagram, and other personality frameworks my entire life. But this is the book that totally changed the way I relate to others in a down-to-earth, practical way. It teaches the tactics that are best for motivating each of the four basic temperaments, communicating with them, loving them, nurturing them, teaching them.My favorite thing about this book is the way it doesn't just treat people like machines or animals, but casts an incredible vision for the the way that you and I can go beyond the limitations of our temperament and grow into a fuller person every day.I would recommend this book to everyone who knows how to read and wants to know themselves and others.

On reading it, I've found that if one is truly "open" to learning about the strong points of the temperament of one's spouse, and what needs to be conquered in one's own temperament, it can actually "smooth the waters" and rough edges that are always present in any relationship between two "imperfect people in an imperfect world".The book also treats with our children's temperaments, which are never more visible than at the beginning of their life - and so easier to recognize in their "pure form" during their earlier years. How to resolve the natural conflicts that occur between their (and our) temperaments is worth the price of the book.Let me emphasize that such books should NEVER be used to try to correct your spouse's temperament (unless they ask for your help) - that is THEIR job, but only to correct your own failings. At the same time, such books will help you to realize the tremendous gift a spouse's temperament brought into your relationship (as well as your own gifts), and help refresh the good reasons you got together in the first place. It will also help you to know how to strengthen the weak points in your children's temperaments, prior to their becoming "independent".I highly recommend thsi book to all.The Temperament God Gave You: The Classic Key to Knowing Yourself, Getting Along with Others, and Growing Closer to the Lord

Since reading this book,I am constantly reminded of what I have learned about the different temperments. I have learned other personality traits in college, marriage preparation etc. but it is good to review it after you have children. When you learn that some of the behaviors which occur over and over again are related to their temperment and how these traits can be useful. I highly recommend this as a quick read for all parents interested in bettering their relationship and parenting of their children. I especially love that it relates temperments to saints, the bible and spiritual growth. though I found the tally chart at the very back the best in determining temperments. I would recommend starting to read the end first.
