This work is clearly a labor of love from authors Peter Prinz and Tony Crawford, who have left no stone unturned in their expansive coverage of the C language. A substantial effort went into the production of this high caliber book. While there are a handful of prominent titles on C, precious few of them have been updated for the present day. This newly revised 2nd edition is a refreshing exception which includes in-depth details of the latest C11 standard, and clearly distinguishes older C89/90 features from the newer C99/C11 revisions. The book is efficiently organized into three parts: (1) overview of the C language itself, (2) thorough reference on C's standard library, and (3) description of GNU programming tools and IDEs compatible with most modern platforms.Geared toward the experienced software developer needing a comprehensive desk reference, this work strikes the right balance between describing practical language features in sufficient detail without drowning the programmer in an ocean of dry, formalized text from the official ISO specification on C (a requisite for compiler writers and system implementors). Although abundant, easily digestible code examples and techniques are provided throughout the book, it is NOT a tutorial or primer on C; newcomers to the language (and procedural programming in general) are better served by works such as "C Primer Plus" (Stephen Prata) or "Programming in C" (Stephen Kochan).The publishing quality of this title is notable and consistent with O'Reilly's high standards. This is desirable for a reference work that is likely to be handled frequently. Typesetting is clean and gentle on the eyes, with generous margins that make the text standout clearly without straining. This is one of the best software books I have ever read. And believe me, I have read plenty of them! (Notice how I have phrased that. Even if a book is made primarily for reference, such as this one, I prefer to make at least one complete reading of it cover to cover, but usually several.) The presentation is orderly, clear, grammatical, and even graphically satisfying. Thank you authors, especially, for formatting the code samples sensibly, instead of caving to dubious popular preferences. I am hard pressed to find negatives in this book, but one does jump out at me: I would have liked to see some detailed coverage of how to use regular expressions in C. The great thing about this book is that it is reference, not a textbook. It does not talk up to you or down to you. This is not a book for beginners, of course -- there are too many of those out there already. Well, if you are serious at all about C programming, then you will want to have this book in close reach at all times.

I don't care what anyone says, C will always be my favorite programming language. it's tiny, it's powerful, it's easy to learn (but hard to master)...it's just fun. This book, like most of O'Reilly's nutshell books, provides an awesome compromise between a reference (it's a great reference) and a tutorial (it's not a tutorial, but examples are abundant). Yeah, the K&R book provides both as well, but not to this depth. K&R also does not cover more recent releases of C like C99 or C11. If you only want to do C programming with Microsoft compilers (they stopped with C98 and have no plans to move forward from there), stick with K&R. Otherwise, go with this book. It may be the only C book that you need.

A very comprehensive reference and a good introduction to C itself. Basically, this is the only C book I use anymore. Covers C99 and C11 as well. Far more chatty than the classic K&R (its a frickin' phone book), but it also covers the language in a lot more depth.

This is a great reference book. It was exactly what I was looking for. If you are looking for a book that will help you learn C this is not the book, but if you know C and are looking for a book to help you learn syntax, this is the book.

I am programming in C for like 20 years now, this is the most comprehensive and complete reference you can acquire about C up to C11.

This book is just for beginners, and there are many out there. Can not recommend as a good reference. Doesn't stand out. Not updated to the internet world. This might be a good one many years ago when C was born.

My four and a half year old son is in love with whales right now. In particular he wants to see pictures of whales. We got him this book for Christmas as a part of a whale themed package and I have to say it's great. There are lots of pictures and because it's geared for a young reader it a fairly short book so we are able to read it to him. I will note however that this book it only about sperm whales which worked great for us since he's interested in learning about all whales. However, if you are looking for a book that covers multiple types of whales you may want to keep on looking.

When you hear your kid come to you and marvel about how deep the whale can dive, you know you bought the right book. This book is informative and filled with many good pictures of different kind of whales. Not just my boy, I like this book too!

Being an ex children's librarian, I find reluctant reader's especially boys gravitate to these non fiction books, great for sight reading, I have my kids say all the words on the page they know then we highlight them and peace them together. There are many little people boys as well as girls that greatly benefit from non fiction books geared toward them and the subjects they love.

This is a great book for teaching the way animals move or what they do in winter!

I love all of the National Geographic Kids books! The text, maps, charts, information, and pictures are all so beautiful! This particular one- Whales, is fabulous! I have to credit this series for helping my students move on from 4 and 5-letter words to sounding out trickier words.

We've bought a number of these to introduce our 3 year old daughter to non-fiction writing. The dolphins and sea turtles books are level 2, they're complex concepts but with mom or dad to help explain and discuss things while reading them to her its fine. This one however deals with the concept of migration, which even with mom and dad helping she just doesn't grasp. Its not the language thats the problem, but the concepts. Will be good when she's older.

Never get enough about whales and my students loved it!

This lovely picture book introduces children to the little-known friendship of Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass, two 19th century civil rights heroes who loved and supported one another for over 40 years. Though the text is spare, the details are skillfully chosen to introduce young readers to the issue of women’s rights, African American rights, and the deep connection between the two. Author Dean Robbins zeroes in on Anthony’s support of bloomers, an empowering form of dress for women in the 1850s. He also portrays Douglass secretly teaching himself to read, a corresponding gesture of empowerment for slaves. The richly layered illustrations by Sean Qualls and Selina Alko are studded with bits of text, suggesting the power of words and ideas for these two tireless activists. “So many speeches to give. So many articles to write. So many minds to change,” the book concludes. In the author’s note, kids learn that Anthony’s and Douglass’ words and ideas did indeed change minds. Wonderful story about a couple of local heroes .. shared with teachers in Israel!

This new book is great. Not only is the story good, but the teaching possibilities are endless. Students enjoy it and like the illustrations as well, which is always a plus!

Also one of my favorite! And very timely. Always.

I wonder why we accept such a superficial reference to women's rights. There is no mention of the serious break in friendship when Douglas supported the fifteenth amendment calling for the African American male vote, without the vote for women. It would be 50 years before women would get the vote. Yet women had supported Douglas from the beginning. While he comes back later to say he supports women's vote - after his own vote is already secured - he was certainly not a faithful friend. Also, why all the bloomers in the pictures! Documentation shows us Susan tried bloomers but they were so distracting to others that she quickly gave them up. This seems framed so narrowly. Children deserve more.

A very interesting book and a useful counterpart to The Plague of the Spanish Lady, which I read decades ago. It takes a more global, less western-centric view of the Spanish Flu, which makes it clear that it was probably the worst disease ever to hit humankind. Full of gobsmacking statistics but also moving personal testimony, but slightly cool in its overall tone.

Overall I found this book to be a compelling account of the Spanish flu pandemic and the it's ramifications, but with a couple of caveats.As some other reviews have pointed out, the narrative does jump around temporally a little more than seems necessary and can be a little bit disorienting. Overall the author is an accomplished writer and overcomes this for the most part.I did find a couple of factual errors. Although relatively minor, factual errors always raise the question as to whether there could be others that I didn't pick up on while reading. The first is simply a geographical error when describing the relationship of Haskell County, KS to Camp Funston. The books description would place Haskell County in Missouri rather than western Kansas. The second factual error had to do with the estimation of death from the flu in Russia. The author indicates that there were 450,000 documented deaths in Russia which "corresponds to 0.2 percent of the Russian population at that time." Although I am not a statistician I am pretty sure that would extrapolate to a population of 225 million which is clearly incorrect.I also found some the attempts to link the flu pandemic to other world events or cultural events to seem like a bit of a stretch. The author correctly points out from the beginning that the pandemic has not received the regard that it deserves as such a major event of the 20th century, however she does seem to be trying to over inflate it's impact in some areas. This would be a minor quibble however in my opinion.Overall this is an important book and worth the time to read.

If you're unfamiliar with the history of the Spanish Flu of 1918, or if your understanding of the pandemic is rooted in what you read many years ago, you may be unfamiliar with its tragic dimensions. British science journalist Laura Spinney sets us all straight in Pale Rider:The Spanish Flu of 1918 and How It Changed the World. "The Spanish flu infected one in three people on earth," she writes, "or 500 million human beings. Between the first case recorded on 4 March 1918, and the last sometime in March 1920, it killed 50-100 million people, or between 2.5 and 5 per cent of the global population." Erupting in three waves, the killer flu brought about social, political, and economic changes reminiscent of those of the Black Death nearly 600 years earlier. And its impact was global, whereas the Black Death brought disaster largely to Europe and Asia.The Spanish Flu was, Spinney asserts, "the biggest disaster of the twentieth century." In all likelihood, the disease killed more than World Wars I and II combined. We Westerners may fail to recognize the pandemic's catastrophic scope because Europe and North America "reported the lowest death rates, on average, so their experiences were atypical." In India, for example, including present-day Pakistan and Bangladesh, "the rate was ten times that in America." Spinney reports that "an estimated 500,000 children were orphaned in South Africa alone," and as many as 18 million Indians died in the pandemic, about 6 per cent of its population. However, the author's emphasis is less on the sheer numbers of casualties than it is on the multiple effects on society at large. For instance, she believes that the flu helped push India closer toward independence (and of course explains her reasoning in detail). Her exploration of the long-term consequences is sobering.It may be difficult for us today to grasp just how different the world was merely a century ago when the Spanish Flu broke out. Spinney reminds us that "life expectancy at birth in Europe and America did not exceed fifty, and in large parts of the globe it was much lower. Indians and Persians, for example, were lucky to celebrate their thirtieth birthdays." Science-based medicine was in its infancy even in the wealthiest countries. What today we call "alternative" therapies such as osteopathy or homeopathy were at least as likely to gain the trust of those who fell ill. In fact, physicians may have done as much harm as good, the Hippocratic Oath notwithstanding. Little wonder. "Viruses occupied only a tiny corner of the psychic universe of 1918. They hadn't been seen, and there was no test for them"—much less a vaccine or any effective treatment. To compound matters, other epidemic diseases were often raging simultaneously, including typhus and bubonic plague. In many areas, doctors were convinced the flu was the plague.Spinney explains that the label "Spanish" flu is a misnomer. She traces the wide-ranging research into the true origins of the disease, identifying the leading candidates as the United States, China, and the Western Front in the European War. Her account wanders all over the globe, zeroing in on such far-flung communities as Odessa, Russia; Kimberley, South Africa; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Zamora, Spain; and Bristol Bay, Alaska. These accounts are deeply disturbing. As is the case in so many circumstances, the poor were the hardest hit everywhere. Spinney notes that "it was bad diet, crowded living conditions and poor access to healthcare that weakened the constitution, rendering the poor, immigrants and ethnic minorities more susceptible to disease." And those suffering from existing diseases were at the greatest risk.Although Pale Rider is predominantly a work of history, and social history in particular, Spinney does delve into the scientific aspects of the pandemic. She explains the historical origins of influenza, the centuries-long efforts to understand it, and the development of vaccines beginning in the 1930s—too late, of course, to help those who fell to the Spanish Flu. However, as you're no doubt aware, the ability of scientists to produce flu vaccines on an annual basis is no guarantee that another pandemic of similar scope won't happen next year. There are simply too many varieties of influenza, and at least two strains influenza type A—H1N1, which was the basis of the Spanish Flu, and H5N1—have the potential to break out at any time in the future. And H5N1 kills some 60 per cent of the people it infects. We can only hope that an effective vaccine can be designed and manufactured in time and that today's greater understanding of public health requirements will keep the death rate in check.My only complaint about Pale Rider is that the book is structured in a way that requires some degree of repetition. Since it's not arranged in chronological order or divided into neat categories, the book can be confusing. Spinney writes in circles. I got dizzy. But the problem is minor in the context of such an informative and well-written account.

Curiosity about this under reported, global event led me here and I wasn't disappointed. Well researched, lots of examples and interesting speculation makes this a worth while read. I can't say that the theory regarding the next pandemic is comforting, but it lays the ground work for being prepared.

Meticulously researched and reported. This book opens the reader's eyes to in of the most devastating events in the past century, but one that we tend to view far more lightly than we should. It's hard to believe how swiftly and widely it spread and the extent of its devastation. The hunt for "patient zero" is a fascinating account of a major, and continuing, project of forensic medicine.

This book is full of statistics, suppositions, reports and scientific information. Not a story but more of a reference book on the subject which is mostly what I was looking for.

This is an enthralling book, filled with true tales of the strategies and subterfuges implemented by the British and their Allies during WWII. This book alone could furnish the plots of dozens of adventure films about the British, Americans (before and after they officially joined the war), and the French Resistance.

Stunning, and riveting account of the development and implementation of pre- and early World War II allied intelligence, and counter-intelligence, and the pivotal role intelligence played in the defeat of the Axis powers. The heroes and heroines of intelligence are rarely recognized. We find out its not just to protect them, its also because they didn't see themselves doing anything heroic, and in many instances are embarrassed by such recognition. The final pages address the demise of cooperative intelligence services, and the global issues that required, but denied such cooperation. Unfortunately, the demise of such cooperation has led to many international incidents that have directly impacted the United States at home, and abroad, including the loss of tens of thousands of lives. Post 9/11 there were demands, plans, and orders to renew cooperation not only between American, and foreign intelligence agencies, but among the many U.S. intelligence/counter-intelligence agencies. Sadly, that effort began to fail even before it could hope for success, and each agency is back to "protecting its turf" and commensurate piece of the budget pie. This is also great read for anyone who wants a better understanding of the relationship between FDR, and Winston Churchill.

Not only is this book informative--I thought I knew the history of World War II until I read everything here that went on behind the scenes in terms of espionage and sabotage--but it was a compelling thriller and very relevant to today's times. It's not "just" an outstanding history lesson, but the theme of self-defense involving more than military preparedness resonates in today's cyber-warfare world. Now I understand how Ian Fleming got many of his ideas for his iconic James Bond series. Perhaps "Intrepid" isn't quite the bon vivant that Bond supposedly is, but man was he tough, resourceful, brilliant, and resilient. And without "Intrepid" and his many courageous colleagues in the field, we wouldn't enjoy the freedoms we have today.

One of the most interesting books I've read in 53 years. (I've read a lot of books.) This book is so densely packed with interesting historical material that it really should be mandatory history material in high school and college. It's full of personal-level human stories about what went on, why, and how they turned out. This book is a window into the bleak and desperate years of WWII, and a valuable insight into the toil and sacrifice of people outside of the U.S.This book contains a mountain of information on many formerly secret operations and policies.

This book surely is the best resource available for learning the back story behind activities within England, Canada, and the USA in the 1930s and very early 1940s having to do with critical national preparations for the approaching conflict with Nazi Germany and Imperialist Japan. The Canadian William Stephenson began working with Churchill (even while the cowardly appeaser Neville Chamberlain was England's Prime Minister) which achieved critical accomplishments, even though the legality of their actions was questionable. Stephenson and Churchill worked with President Roosevelt which also materially improved the non-Nazi portion of the world's strength and chances for surviving the Nazi onslaught. Again, the actions taken by Roosevelt were of dubious legality but absolutely essential for the survival of a non-Nazi Western Civilization. The isolationist mood of the USA during the 1930s came amazingly close to ending democracy. This book provides astonishing details about how extensive was Nazi infiltration into nominally American corporations like Standard Oil, International Telephone & Telegraph, etc., as well as the US government. Dozens of US congressmen and at least one US senator used their franking privileges to send postage-free literature to American voters that supported Nazi interests. You will be astonished to learn how extensive the Nazi influence was inside the USA before Pearl Harbor. I highly recommend you read this book!!

fascinating stuff! There are things that you just don't think about in covert warfare, and this book is full of the most interesting of them. For example, on a military raid on Nazi territory, one scientist goes along to view the German radar setup installed and to judge how far along the Germans are in radar technology. Along with him go two British soldiers, whose job it is to kill the scientist if it appears he might be captured. That is JUST the sort of thing that you say "of course, they would have to do that", but it just never occurred to you until you read it.A really well written story and very enjoyable- my favorite anecdote I will not spoil by telling you- just look for the story of OSS sending a letter to a Chech Nazi puppet official from an alleged "girlfriend" in South America, said letter detailing her knitting Karl a sweater.This book is so well written that it does not come across as "dated", a major achievement for a book about WW II. It is a paen of praise for William Stephenson, but done so well you end up thinking he heartily and thoroughly deserves it.

I enjoyed this book, and then I found out that half of it was fiction, and poorly researched to boot. Sigh. I'm still a huge Bill Stephenson fan. This is an interesting read in combination with the book "The Real Intrepid," which is well-researched, and therefore a better window into Stephenson's life, and into the BSC in general.
