An outstanding book, about probably the most incredible Himalayan ascent of any 8000+ meter peak. Climbing Mt. Everest solo without ANY support from Sherpas or any other climbers, with an unheard-of 4-person 'expedition' (only with his girlfriend, a mandated Chinese military 'liaison officer', and a translator), no 'fixed ropes', no bottled oxygen. Not only that, he ventured forth in the 'monsoon' of summer when other climbers fear to tread the high mountains of that region. The achievement in itself is a worthy read, but Messner is a sensitive and philosophical person, who engages with the cultures and people en route, and ably shares all of that with us as well. Messner is not only the finest high-altitude mountaineer in history, he is also fabulous writer, and the translation from the original German (he is Austrian, from the Tyrolean Alps) is faithful to his style and nature. I have a very large collection of mountaineering books, and this at or near the top. Not because of an epic survival (like Touching The Void), or epic disaster (Into Thin Air) but because of an epic vision carried to completion, against impossible odds, and wise perspectives on things other than just the mountain.

Everest is a household name and has been for a long time all over the world. I was very impressed with this book. I learned more about Tibet, its people, religion and history than you will ever be taught in a western school. This book is full of fantastic photos of this region and its people. The logistics of this feat and polotics of dealing with the Chinese as well as the cost amazed me. His trip was difficult before he ever began the trek to the mountain itself. This mountain is constantly assaulted by huge (and well financed) expeditions mostly from the southern (easier) route. This book follows Messner on the north side of the mountain which is a more difficult route. It takes more than freakish genetics, an insane no quit attitude, and the mental toughness to deal with doing this totally alone. You have to luck into good weather. Messner left a female companion at a camp of 6500 meters (enough to kill most mortals in itself) and took his all his provisions on his back. Carrying a mere 10 lbs at this altitude would be the equivalent of hiking 15 miles over unstable terrain with a fat girl on your back breathing through a straw. No ropes, no Sherpa support, no radio, no crevasse ladders, and no help if he got into trouble. And he pulled this off. Messner is one of the toughest human beings I have ever seen.

Best book I have ever read without doubt. Takes you completely into the journey and makes you feel very much part of the achievement. His writing style can be stilted but just a must have for any armchair or real adventurer's bookshelf.

This ought to be a great book. The first man to climb Everest without oxygen from the North at the height of the monsoon season. Messner was about to do solo, without any form of support whatsoever beyond advanced base camp.But it's not as exciting as it sounds. If you want to finish this book without falling asleep or giving up halfway, you'd need to do a lot of skipping. Messner bores us with too many details, quoting chunks from publications, his mother and his girlfriends. It's really very badly edited and there are way too many "subplots" that only serve to disrupt the reader's flow of thoughts.Skip through all the boring stuff, concentrate on his actual description of the climb, how he arrived at the conclusion that Mallory never reached the summit while climbing between the First and Second Step and how he finally struggled his way to the misty summit. It's actually quite a good read, but leave the rest of the story out.

One of the best books that I have ever read. A wonderful story about love, mountains, a people and a life philosophy.

The book is in really rough shape for $15 Two of the pages have been cut out. I am not happy with this purchase!

I'm very happy with this school memory book. It's spiral bound, with a thicker cardboard-like cover, and 2 pages dedicated to each grade (with a pocket behind each grade). As mentioned in other reviews, the pockets (or even if kept loose in the book) are not meant to hold 8 1/2 x11 sheets of paper without folding. However, if you keep your kids artwork separately like I do (I have so much it couldn't be contained in a book!) and intend to use this school book for report cards only, this book is perfect. Each grade has a section for information and a school photo (a wallet size, or maybe 4x6 if you wanted to cover up some of the text). I think if you keep a separate "baby book" for your child (all non-school accomplishments like weight, interests, "firsts", etc) and a separate art book, this is fantastic for school memories.

PROSI read a lot of reviews in order to decide on which school memory book to buy for my children, and I settled on this one because it has everything I was looking for:- grade- school- teachers- school picture- age- date of first day- height- weight- what I want to be when I grow up / places I want to travel / skills I would like to learn / graduation plans (depending on grade)- friends- hobbies / interests- signature- It also has an enclosure checklist, which I may or may not use - likely not. The only things I intend to keep in the pockets are first and last day of school pics taken with a photo prop.- Finally, it has a rubber band to hold the book closed. I ordered four books, and one of the covers was damaged from the rubber band, but I still think it's a nice addition to the book.NOTE - nothing in my research indicated that this book had a paper cover. It's not even soft-cover / paperback quality. It is truly a paper cover - like a greeting card. I still rate this product with five stars, but I would advise anyone who is researching options to consider this. Because it has a paper cover, I would suggest NOT keeping this on a bookshelf or any other open-to-small-hands space.CONS - and how I overcame them and still rate this a five-star item- This book does not contain any preschool pages. So I am going to either 1) photocopy the page and modify to reflect preschool, or 2) make my own but similar page. Then I will fill those out and put them in the pocket(s) or store them in separate poly envelopes from the dollar store. No problem. We are doing 2s, 3s, and 4s classes with our kids, so three years of preschool (3 mornings per week, 8 months per year - for all the haters out there); if we were only doing a 4s class, I would just keep the 4s page in the kindergarten pocket.- This book is not 8.5x11 and, as such, the pockets are not big enough to accommodate 8.5x11 sheets of paper - think artwork, awards, report cards, etc. This may be a deal breaker for some, but I don't mind because I have two plastic file boxes that I am using as keepsake boxes for each of our children - one for letter-sized files, and one for larger items (think clay handprints, this book, etc.). So I do not personally need the pocket to accommodate 8.5x11 papers. If that matters to you, there are a couple other books on Amazon that allow for those sizes.Thanks for reading, and happy memory making!

My siblings and I had a book just like this growing up, so when my sister announced she was expecting, I wanted to find something similar. I can't believe how close it is!! We love going through our old school report cards, pictures, and notes. Thank you for still making it!

This is one of my best kid purchases. I've had it from K through 8th and still going. It is the perfect place to store the yearly photo, report cards and other misc things. It can't store everything but it stores the essentials. Its so nice having everything in one place. The spiral bound is perfect, sturdy, fits right on your bookshelf. I can't recommend this enough!

Just what we were looking for...hopefully it will hold everything - the only thing I didn't like was that it started at kindergarten versus pre-school

Exactly what I was looking for. My daughter started Kindergarten this past fall. I have an accordion file that I started in Pre-K of some of her drawings and work, but I wanted something a bit more prescribed to trace her schooling journey. I like the prompts to record teacher, school, favorite subject, etc. The envelope is a nice place to stick small items. It is paper, with a plastic-ey outer binding, so will not be super durable, but I was aware of that when I ordered.This is very similar to the book that I had as a child/teenager, and I am happy to have one for my daughter as well.

The cover is quite old fashioned looking & I don't think my son is going to be excited about that. It is smaller than I was expecting (though I didn't notice the dimensions are clearly stated on here) and there is only one place for a photo wallet size for each grade, not even room for the class picture as well (even a small one). This is my biggest disappointment with this memory book. My four bigger kids had School Memory books that have a full blank page for photos, art work, etc and another page for their school photo. I really love that about theirs (I can't find the book I bought for my big kids anywhere because it has been so many years - four years in between my baby and the big kids).It is OK, but disappointing compared to what I have for my other kids.

I purchased for my grand who starts kindergarten this year. I kept one for both my kiddos and they love looking through the memories. All years have pockets for keepsakes and places to add notations about your child for the beginning and end of the year. I just love it

I really love this cookbook. My father was born in Calabria, so I eagerly awaited it's release when I read about it in Saveur magazine before it came out. I own over 400 cookbooks now and over 200 of them are Italian. I'm always happy to expand my regional Italian cookbooks, especially a region as ignored as Calabria. I am particularly interested in cookbooks that don't Americanize everything in terms of ingredients and cooking techniques. I want to learn about traditional cooking and preserving methods and this definitely fits the bill. Since I can't travel to Italy as much as I'd like, having authentic recipes like this can really help me travel through the food I cook and serve. Dinner can transport me there for a lot less money!This is a very personal book and was clearly written with a lot of love and integrity. It's her story and she shares some wonderful tales and family recipes. I've tried many of the dishes and they are all wonderful. One thing I really love is all of her recipes for homemade items like limoncello, homemade sausage, homemade fresh ricotta, & her preserving techniques. My family does all of these things and I am often in awe of how capable they are of canning and preserving anything and everything. Even though my family can help, nothing is written down or explained very clearly, so these recipes will be a wonderful resource!Some of these recipes have become important in our household - the ricotta is amazing and my husband always insists on making a double batch! Her recipe for candied orange peel is superb. They are the best candied orange peels I've ever tasted. Some of her recipes do take some effort and are probably suited to more advanced cooks. That might put some people off, but there are simple dishes too, so I think there is something for everyone.With regards to the complaints about the book - there are beautiful pictures in the book. There aren't shots of every completed dish, but I'm not the type to criticize a book due to a lack of pictures. It's actually a pet peeve of mine when people give bad reviews on here due to a lack of pictures. They're nice and can be helpful, but I'm much more concerned with good recipes, food history and an intesting read. This book is very special and can really educate about eating good, fresh food, the region of Calabria and about food culture in Italy. I can't recommend it enough! Try the limoncello! We gave it out for Christmas last year and it was a big hit!

I was very happy with the recipe book. It contains many of the same dishes my mother prepared many years ago and has many new ones I am eager to try. The stories about the different foods are very interesting. The author replied to my e-mails and I was very appreciative of her thoughtfulness in writing back.

Love the stories more than the recipies. To many ingredients hard to find I ended substituting so many it became something else. No peas in lasagna, mother in law from Calabria, however hard boiled eggs yes and not just on top but a whole layer in the middle. I laughed when I read about the little meat balls like little marbles. Also in our family.

I have a friend from Calabria, which led me to purchase a recipe book specifically on Calabrian cooking out of interest, which in turn led me purchase THIS particular book. The recipes are truly unique to the region of Calabria and the author goes to great lengths to explain the details and history on each particular recipe. Typically I blast through a cookbook; however, I took my time w/ this one as there is a "story" to accompany each recipe. I also enjoyed the family and regional history the author wrote about. The recipes themselves have been a great success. For example, after making the "Family Bread" recipe (which rocks - amazing!), I will never go back to making a bread w/ out a starter/sponge again. Simple ingredients, yet amazing food from this gem of a region in Italy. I'd highly recommend this book (whether your are Calabrian/Italian or not). A must have in your cookbook collection.

Beautiful paictures and easily read recipes. These reciples cover a wide variety of Calabrian dishes. Some of them, I haven't seen since my grandmother made them. They are as I remember her making them. Lovely book to read even if one never makes any of the recipes.

I lost my father a couple years ago. He loved to cook. I really wish that I had gotten more interested before his passing, but I never saw the point with so much good food being made. I'm also married to a Thai woman who is a fabulous cook, and doesn't want to share the kitchen whatsoever. Still I've wanted to share Italian cooking with my Thai family, and to be honest even with myself. I've had years of eating Thai food daily. The Italian staples of my youth just weren't spicy enough for my family. "My Calabria" was recommend to me over a conversation on making homemade Fusilli. I found a lot more than Fusilli. I found a new love of Italian food. What a find! My father would have loved this cookbook. I sat down and read it cover to cover. Something I'd imagine he would have done too! I truly enjoy this author's style and the Jack Reacher series... I am now on book 7.... It's hard for me to put the book down once i get started... I would suggest starting at book 1 and proceeding with his books in order.... Particularly the first 3 or 4 books as there are some characters that carry forward in these books. And book 1 is a great intro as to who this Jack Reacher guy is... BTW, Tom Cruise playing Jack Reacher in the movies just doesn't cut it for me... Jack... 6'5".... 250 pounds... Need I say more....

What’s nifty about this story is that even though it’s the sixth book in the series it still ties in neatly with the first (Killing Floor). Turns out Reacher’s brother had a job investigating financial crimes with a girlfriend in the Secret Service, and now she’s come looking for Reacher to help diffuse an assassination attempt upon the Vice President of the United States. Well, this book is 550 pages long, so it’s not going to be as straightforward as the synopsis on the back cover makes it sound.Lee Child is skilled at writing a modern thriller. It can’t just be his short, direct sentences that do it. He can somehow imbue his stories with a sense of urgency and panic. Sometimes, I find myself reading faster as if that will help Reacher get out of his current predicament. Whatever the author is doing, he’s a master at it. These are hard books to take a break from, make sure you go to bed early so you can have extra time to read before sleeping, or you’ll be sorry.

Some spoilers below, read on at own risk.I like the Jack Reacher series. It's a predictable flow for each book, but you just have to accept that. He's a badass, always one step ahead of the bad guys, always the smartest guy in the room, figures things out before everyone else, etc. And, of course, he hooks up with some hot woman, gets into a serious relationship with her, and breaks up by the end. All that, no problem. Just accept that that's how it's going to go, and read on to see how it is handled this time around.In this book, Jack is a little TOO smart. A little TOO good. I think it was just pushed a little too far, while other things didn't make a lot of sense to me. For instance, the knowledge and skills of the would-be assassins don't add up considering their background. Also, in one attempt at making Jack seem so much smarter than everyone else was just off-base, and that had to do with the Beretta in the kitchen drawer. Most law enforcement or military folks I know advocate that a gun being used for self-defense should be loaded and ready to fire - that extra step of inserting the magazine, pulling the slide, etc - could be the difference between life and death. In this case, the Beretta was in the drawer with the mags next to it. A professional such as a secret service agent wouldn't have had it that way, and a military professional such as Jack wouldn't have considered it a mistake to have the bullets in the mag. I think BOTH would have kept the gun in the drawer, bullets in mag, mag in gun, ready to go. Not a big deal except that the whole idea becomes a major plot twist at the very end of the book.Anyway, it's a good book, I recommend reading it, there were just a few things that bugged me and made me think that the author was trying too hard to be clever.

Huge Reacher fan (Reacher Creature). While in real life much of what Reacher does to get himself in and an out of a jam couldn't/wouldn't really fall neatly into place, he's a great guy to root for! He's not the underdog--he's way too bug for that. But he believes in justice and the American way and fairness. He believes that if you hurt the weak you should pay for that. And he'll see to it that that happens.Speaking of helping the weak, that's how we meet Reacher in this book. Helping people is like Reacher's spidey sense. When he overhears there might be a woman in need, Reacher rushes in to save the day. Nevermind the fact that he's sticking his nose in to someone else's business...Reacher can't NOT help.This story is part of a rare 4-part series, so you'll have a better context for some of the characters and Reacher's journey if you start with 61 Hours. (I've read that one twice.) Once you start reading you won't want to put the book down. Then you're hooked for life!

I have been hooked on the Jack Reacher series since I saw the first movie and read the first action packed novel. Now that there is soon to be another Jack Reacher movie (Never go back) coming out soon I have begun to again read these novels again. I just finished reading Worth Dying for (A Reacher Novel) by Lee Child and loved it.I find it amazing that Lee Child can come up with original and unique Jack Reacher stories that keep you turning the pages. In this story it is winter and Jack happens to be at a bar in of all places Nebraska, where the wind rips across the flat barren fields which are filled with corn in the summer. This novel is packed with good and bad characters who Reacher handles in his own special way.What starts out as an alcoholic and almost drunk doctor who did not want to visit one of his patients until Reacher shames the doctor and Jack volunteers to drive the doctor’s car to see the beat up woman, turns into a complex murder mystery with bad guys running around all trying to kill Reacher. Jack was on his way to Virginia but the good people in this part of corn husker country wind up helping Reacher hide as they relate the corrupt tale of local and out of town thugs who have run rough shod over everyone in the area. I never like to reveal too much when reviewing a novel because it spoils it for the reader; however, I will let you know this much about this action packed novel.This is a fast moving tale and I found it amazing how in the dead of winter in this flat corn crop area of Nebraska Jack was able to elude the numerous bad guys as he solves the mystery of a missing girl, murder and a vicious sex slave smuggling ring. I found this book a fantastic read. Jack Reacher is my kind of freelance detective and investigator. I highly recommend this novel.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J.
