Her personal experiences, combined with interviews of colleagues, form the basis of this history, which recounts how against the backdrop of the feminist activities of the early 1970s, a group of editors and writers led by founding editors Gloria Steinem and Patricia Carbine strategized to create a radically different kind of magazine for women. Thom offers detailed portraits of the women involved, from Steinem to many lesser-known editors and writers. She covers the magazine's financial struggles, its role in the women's movement, and its relationship with readers. At the time this book was published in 1997, Mary Thom was the executive editor of Ms., after starting out as a researcher and then writer, and then senior editor; she also edited Letters to Ms., 1972-1987.She wrote in the first chapter, “Gloria Steinem was backing her way into Ms. The idea of starting something as viable and substantial as a magazine---with staff and readers, financial backers, and quite possibly a movement relying on it---was terrifying to a freelance writer who had never really held a regular job. But while she was reaching for an audience as a speaker, she did need a comfortable vehicle for her writing---one that simply did not exist.” (Pg. 8-9)About the name of the magazine, she recounts, “There had been a strong contingent that had favored ‘Sisters,’ but Gloria Steinem held out for the more symbolic ‘Ms.’ On that level, the name worked well. Ms. clearly broke with tradition, fairly screaming that this was more than just another women’s magazine. The Ms. woman was independent. She would not be defined by her relationship, or lack of it, to a man, be it husband or father. She stood up for herself… The statement was a bold one at a time when, for example, women routinely were denied credit in their own names. Merely explaining what the name meant became an opportunity to change minds.” (Pg. 14)After the first issue was published, “The elation of the staff could not be dimmed by the television news commentary that same evening by the late Harry Reasoner. ‘I’ll give it six months,’ Reasoner said of the new Ms., before they run out of things to say.” Years later, on the occasion of the magazine’s fifth anniversary, he was gracious enough to take it back.” (Pg. 43)She points out, “Its agenda did make Ms. seem more like a social movement than a national magazine, and both the staff and the watching world expected feminist principles to govern all levels of activity…And because the pressure of monthly deadlines did nothing to diminish the urgency of feminist goals, Ms. had to operate, for better or worse, both as a publishing enterprise and a center for activism.” (Pg. 44-45)She chronicles the acrimonious relationship between Gloria Steinem and Betty Friedan: “Friedan and Steinem had never been close colleagues or friends, although in the past year they had collaborated … to found the National Women’s Political Caucus (NWPC). Friedan … accused Steinem, and [Bella] Abzug as well, of ‘female chauvinism’ that ‘could make men slam the door in our faces.’ … Friedan made the most of the publicity potential of her turning in Steinem by calling a press conference on July 18, 1972… she accused Steinem of making a woman feel apologetic for ‘loving her husband or children’… It’s a oversimplification to say that Betty Friedan was suffering from an acute case of hurt feelings because of the growing popularity of Gloria Steinem and Ms. Her subsequent writings, particularly in her book The Second Stage, demonstrate that she remained upset and embarrassed by what she saw as an antimale bias in feminism. But there is no doubt that she experienced rejection earlier in the year when a NWPC meeting was called to pick a spokeswoman for the Democratic National Convention. Steinem… was chosen for the post even though she had not sought the position and Friedan had vigorously lobbied for it.” (Pg. 50-52)Of the incident when the Redstockings published a press release accusing Gloria Steinem and Ms. of being agents of the CIA, she reports: “Steinem had years before worked for a foundation in Cambridge, Massachusetts, that encouraged young people from the United States to attend International Communist Youth Festivals. Some financing for students and young people attending those events came indirectly from the CIA… Steinem had made her role public after Ramparts magazine came out with an exposé in 1967 on how CIA money passed through foundations to the NSA and other groups… Steinem finally did, reluctantly and ‘in anger’ answer the Redstockings indictment in an August 15 release to the feminist press. And she did acknowledge that working with a project that involved CIA funding was a mistake: ‘It’s painfully clear with hindsight that even indirect, control-free funding was a mistake if it couldn’t be publicized, but I didn’t realize that then.’” (Pg. 74-79)She points out that after Alice Walker moved to California, she “remained a contributing editor until the end of 1986 when she abruptly withdrew her name from the masthead. In her brief letter of resignation, she said she wanted Ms. to know of the ‘swift alienation’ she and her daughter, Rebecca, felt when the magazine arrives ‘with its determinedly [and to us grim] white cover.’ … Joanne Edgar and Rosemary Bray, who had joined the Ms. staff in 1985 after editing for Essence, both told Alice Walker how upset they were at her letter. Walker wrote back with a longer explanation that she hoped... would be published. She said, among other things, that the reason she had stopped going to editorial meetings when she had been on staff all those years ago was that ‘it became clear that what racial color there was to be in the magazine I was expected to provide or represent.’” (Pg. 89-90)Of the antipornography debates of the 1980s, she recalls, “I asked Andrea Dworkin an obvious question: If ordinances like these are passed, especially with right-wing antifeminist support, would ‘Ms.’ not be among the first publications attacked? Her response was... perhaps that was something we would just have to live with. To her great credit, Dworkin recognized that her own, often sexually explicit fiction might also be in jeopardy if her statute was misused. But, characteristically, that risk would not stop her from standing firm on the front line of this battle. Whatever one’s position, it was impossible not to admire Andrea Dworkin.” (Pg. 94)She acknowledges, “Over the years, Ms. readers reserved their most serious and sustained criticism not for a particular ad campaign but for an entire category. Many readers did not want Ms. to carry cigarette advertising. Some hated the alcohol ads as well… Ms. explained the decision … ‘There is a clear warning on the package and in the ads that smoking is dangerous. After some consideration, it seemed to us that the reader had the right to make the choice’… At the time, most of the Ms. editors smoked, and the explanations probably sounded more principles and less tortured than it does today… But tobacco advertising was such a large category for Ms… no one on the staff thought the magazine could survive without the income from cigarette ads. As Gloria Steinem wrote, the necessity of taking tobacco ads had ‘become a kind of prison.’” (Pg. 135-136)After Steinem relinquished her editorship of the magazine, “Suzanne Levine believes that Ms. suffered more from Steinem’s absence… than the editors knew at the time… When Steinem did not have a daily involvement with the magazine, ‘there was a level of imagination and optimism and freshness that we couldn’t duplicate… Just having her around, talking about perceptions of the day’s events, coming back from trips with those little scraps of paper about people she’d met, her comments on articles, her ability to make us deal with each other in a different way. When those things were taken away it brought down the level of creativity and honesty at the magazine.’” (Pg. 170)Of the decision to go ad-free, she records, “perhaps many more of the core readership of Ms. would be willing to invest $30 or more in an advertising-free revival of the magazine. That is what Gloria Steinem and Robin Morgan, who would edit the new version, asked of them early in 1990. Ms. readers responded once again. They would pay a premium for their magazine. Many readers were doubly generous and checked off a box on the subscription form to pay for the magazine to be sent to battered women shelters and to other women who could not afford the higher rate.” (Pg. 217)One looking for a more critical perspective on the magazine will need to look elsewhere. About the Author

John Seddon is visiting professor at The University of Hull Business School and Managing Director of Vanguard Consulting. Interesting, if biased manifesto on systems thinking and a Utopian premise for implementation. His 'solution' to the ills of public sector service organizations is just to scrap everything and start over in his mold. Clearly that won't happen, but he can't come up with anything more pragmatic. He also assumes all employees are intrinsically motivated when there are at least a couple in every office I've worked who do it for the paycheck. And spoken like a true academician, he assumes that managers will be able to perform this 'check' on an ongoing basis, when we have a myriad of other duties to perform, from making payroll to unplugging toilets. I think his ideas have merit and am willing to explore further, but his zealous rant against the regime gets very tiring by the end of the book.

I could supply many examples from the UK NHS, and teachers, soldiers and police would readily testify to the truth of Seddon's argument. Their managers would utterly deny there is a problem, and set about rooting out the few bad apples who disturb their illusions. It's not that managers are intrinsically daft, it's just that the tasks they are set are misdirected from the start. Politicians wonder how the services get poorer even as all the targets they set are met.Seddon's book is seditious. It makes a powerful case that most of the people in the public sector involved in regulation, management, specification of roles and contracts, are actually wasting their time, and even worse they get in the way of front line staff trying to do their jobs. When the truth that Seddon articlulates is fully understood a whole load of jobs and staff in the public sector will need to disappear.This is an excellent book. It challenges current orthodoxies, and explains why front line public servants such as doctors, teachers, police so detest their management. This book deserves to lead to major changes in how the public sector works. Management that is focused on targets, and looking good to superiors and politicians, rather than on delivering good service to clients and patients is useless.I recommend this book to MPs, councillors, and to front line public sector workers. Their managers must not read as it is dangerous, and they don't need to know it, or they will lose all belief in their work.This book is very powerful medicine, and the British public sector would benefit from a large dose of it.

Is it because the Government has employed too many bureaucrats, or because the computer systems have crashed, or because the public sector is simply incapable of doing anything efficiently?I have been reading a book which purports to provide at least part of the answer: Systems Thinking in the Public Sector. The title makes it sound more boring than an Alistair Darling speech, but it is an extraordinary insight into why, at the end of each month, millions of us are left wondering where on earth all the money taken from us in tax has gone.The argument compellingly made in this book by John Seddon, an occupational psychologist and "management thinker", is that the Government has designed failure into almost everything it does on our behalf. It has not done so deliberately; but it is culpable because it has failed to listen to people who know better how to run services on behalf of the customer rather than the producer.On the eve of the Budget last week, Gordon Brown set out what he called the third stage of Labour's public sector reform programme.It was, he said, "designed to meet the rising aspirations of citizens and to achieve excellence and opportunity for all". The Prime Minister said the first stages "inevitably meant using national targets, league tables and tough inspection regimes to monitor progress". Now he wants to focus on diversity of provision and choice.We can only hope he had Seddon's book by his bedside as he pondered these changes, because it is evident that the whole edifice of public service delivery is rotten from top to bottom and needs a fundamental redesign. Throwing more money at it will simply compound failure. And the choice Mr Brown's reforms seek to offer is pointless if we are simply being asked to pick a school or hospital from three bad ones.Seddon says that the fundamental problem is precisely what Mr Brown identified as the "inevitable" requirement of efficiency: the obsessive control of public service delivery by a central command structure that is largely ignorant of how to do the job properly, but whose mechanisms - targets, inspections and the rest - have become an orthodoxy that few dare challenge."If investment in the UK public sector has not been matched by improvements, it is because we have invested in the wrong things," says Seddon. "We think inspection drives improvement, we believe in the notion of economies of scale, we think choice and quasi-markets are levers for improvement, we believe people can be motivated with incentives, we think leaders need visions, managers need targets and that information technology is a driver of change. These are all wrong-headed ideas. But they have been the foundation of public-sector 'reform."Seddon says that public services have requirements placed on them by a whole series of bodies that are all based on opinion rather than knowledge. Many are burdened with specifications, targets, regulations and the like which are actually making matters worse.The really scary thing is that the Government is simply digging a deeper and deeper pit into which to pour our money. New management approaches and further "reform" are compounding previous mistakes."At the heart of the problems with public-sector reform is the regime's incapacity to do the right thing," Seddon says. "It is focused on doing the wrong things and assumes compliance to be evidence of success. The inability to act is systemic."Nor is he enamoured of trying to improve services through "local engagement" or "citizen's juries".He argues that what people want from public services is for them to work properly, not to pick a heath-care model, vote on a local education policy or elect a chief constable. Waste can be eradicated if the systems are properly designed against demand rather than phoney outcomes.Take the payment of housing benefits to four million people. The system the Government designed for doing this involved having a front office for claiming benefits and a back office for processing them.Immediately, says Seddon, there was a problem. It meant that the person with whom the benefit recipient dealt was different from the person who would decide about the payment. Targets were then superimposed on this structure - how quickly back-office phones were picked up, or correspondence answered, or the time taken to calculate a claim.While this might look like a sensible approach, Seddon says it simply guaranteed that, from the claimant's stand-point, the service remained poor because the back offices simply became repositories for complaints about delays and wrong decisions. It also opened the system to fraud.What should happen is that when people turn up to get a service, they are met by someone who can help them get it."As soon as you create a split between front and back office, you also create waste. To do the same on a larger scale is to mass-produce it." The same failures are built into all public services, and to address the problems by reducing the number of targets is pointless: "Doing less of the wrong thing is not doing the right thing."Waste on the scale we have seen demoralises people working in the public sector and angers those who pay for or use services. It is also stupefyingly costly. Cumulative public spending since 1997 stands at £4,500 billion - double the total for the preceding 10 years.How much of this is wasted? The public sector employs 800,000 more people than in 1997, many of them engaged in developing specifications, writing guidance, drawing up standards, devising targets, enforcing inspections - all in the name of a reform programme that does not work properly.It is barmy - a madness in whose name we have been mightily fleeced, and continue to be so.

I purchased the Dot 3 without really doing my homework. Since the delivery time was over a month l decided to some research. This book brings all the basic stuff together in a neat little one hour read. Just the basic nuts and bolts of it without going into great detail. If you have experience with Alexa you will be disappointed, if you are new to this technology you will find it helpful. I would recommend reading this if you are considering (before) buying into this technology.

As a first-time user of Echo Dot, I felt there were too many assumptions being made by the author. He would write, “Go to [category] and do...”, but he never said how to get to [category]. I thought this book was a Step-by-step Manual, but it’s just an overview of Alexa’s talents. I am disappointed in the book. Instead I went online and got my instructions there.

I don't now what to expect for $2.99 but this "booklet" left me quite frustrated. There are s o m e tips but way too few.

The information is handy but I was trying to troubleshoot my echo dot. Good info for using dot and its functions.

This book is handy to help you get up and running. I found it useful for getting up and running. My only complaint is there are several typo's in this book and more grammer errors than an Author should make. It is obvious that the book was not proof read before published. In fact the publisher should be ashamed, putting a book out with this many errors is sad. That said, it has a lot of helpful info and is worth the price and worth the read.

I had already started my home automation using Alexa. Plugs, switches , bulbs cameras. This eBook opened my eyesAs to all the different ways the technology can be used. Well worth the cost.

Love the Echo Dot. Was easy to set up and I use all the time for infomation as well as music. Plan to get more smart products for home that Dot can also control with voice command!

Found this book informative and interesting. Was not aware of all the available functions of my Echo Dot.Well worth the money.

My mother and her sister were/are going through an ugly dispute over how my grandmother's estate has been handled. One sister seems more concerned about preserving $ for her family rather than my grandmother's care since she's still alive (and it's not my mother). Had the estate been set up properly (and not by my aunt's husband), maybe their relationship wouldn't be irreparably damaged.I assumed my parents had a trust. Then one day I casually asked about it even though I read this book a few years ago and knew I should've addressed it earlier. To my surprise they only had a will. My intelligent, stubborn and know-it-all father said he wanted easy access to his money and a trust wouldn't work. Well, all my inexpert advice wouldn't sway him. I sent the book to my parents and after they both read it, an appointment was set up with their attorney to get things set up properly. If a book can convince my father, then it must be superb. Personally I don't care about what I can get when they pass away. I just figure if someone's going to set up a will to supposedly make things easier on their heirs, they might as well create a trust and really make things less of a hassle. Any book that can convince my father gets 5 stars.

More legal advice than stories of rich and famous. The little stories are only used at the beginning and end of each chapter as examples of legal information. Kinda feels like a large advertisement for getting your trust or will set up (which is a good idea). However I was looking for interesting stories to read.

I enjoyed this book as much as I enjoyed watching Transparent. Her description of parenting was spot on and entertaining. But, sometimes I had some difficulty following. I was reading about a place and time but then she abruptly switched to a different place and time so I found myself a little confused. I am familiar with where she grew up and the community she grew up in so that was interesting to me. I would have liked to understood more of how her fathers gender change affected her own change because they seemed to be in tandem. I also wonder how much tv shows like Transparent have an actual effect on our culture. I see the young fathers now taking more responsibility for what had been traditionally mothers roles and actually planning the birthday parties themselves, etc. A powerful and welcome shift.

My partner read the book and I listed to the author read it on audible. Bother we’re great experience and the book was great.

As a fan of Transparent, I was excited to score an uncorrected proof of Jill Soloway’s (they, them, theirs) new book She Wants It: Desire, Power, and Toppling the Patriarchy from NetGalley. Soloway is also an alum of University of Wisconsin-Madison and queer, so I have always been curious about them. I was quickly hooked after the first few pages of reading about their childhood, their family, and their feminist awakening via a crush on a particular UW women’s studies professor who was a “k.d. lang-lookalike.” I couldn’t wait to hear Soloway’s words of wisdom about toppling the patriarchy.From the start, I found the book to be smart, sharp, and witty; Soloway would be someone to go have a drink with, to be sure. I laughed out loud a number of times.I enjoyed reading about Soloway’s kids, their career and the fight to get Transparent made, as well as the journeys Soloway and their parent went through regarding their gender identities. I also appreciated Soloway’s candor and bravery in sharing these stories as well as those concerning their own learning processes.Unfortunately, I was left a bit unfulfilled waiting for Soloway’s inspirational calls to action on fighting the patriarchy. Soloway explains the “Topple Principles” that were created to guide the development of Transparent. These included, “Our revolution must be intersectional,” and “Be brave.” They describe the formation of #TimesUp but with a generous sprinkling of name-droppings. Soloway tackles traditional gender roles and feeling as though they had fallen short of being the good mother, the good wife, the good daughter. These moments of vulnerability are powerful but too few.Soloway carefully confronts the sexual harassment allegations some trans co-stars made against Transparent lead Jeffrey Tambor. While candid about Tambor’s moodiness and downright aggression on set, Soloway relays the sexual harassment situation with an arm’s-length treatment that surprised and disappointed me.The main title, She Wants It, is spot-on as the major theme throughout the book is Soloway’s persistent quest for creative (and commercial) success. But based on the subtitle of the book, I wanted a deeper examination of the patriarchy from Soloway’s perspective as a (albeit white, privileged, and famous) nonbinary queer person in the entertainment industry. While I found the book intriguing as an entertainment memoir, it fell short as a manifesto on toppling the patriarchy. And this is okay – to be fair, Soloway never calls this a manifesto and they have more than enough juicy stories to fill a memoir as a heavy-hitter in Hollywood – but I wanted more. I was left wishing that Soloway had imparted more of their thoughts about how the reader can join the fray against the patriarchy.A quick read, the book is enjoyable overall. I would recommend this book to fans of Transparent or Jill Soloway’s other works; I could see how those who haven’t watched Transparent may not get as much out of the book. It’s also recommended for those who enjoy celebrity memoirs or those who crave reading nonbinary voices.

She Wants It is a Hollywood film and television memoir by Jill Soloway. Jill is the writer/director of Amazon’s Transparent. Transparent is based on Jill’s real life.Jill’s father was depressed and a mostly absent workaholic father during her childhood. After Jill and her sister, Faith, went to college, their parents divorced.During an early morning phone call, Jill is the first family member to which her father comes out to as trans. Jill’s first thought is this is part of her story and she was going to tell it. If her father can become Carrie London, why can’t she become the film writer/director she always aspired to be?Jill polished up an old script and it was green-lighted. After post-production is complete and Afternoon Delight is submitted to Sundance, Jill goes with Faith to meet their father for the first time as a woman. When her terminally ill aunt asks her to deliver a card to her father asking him not to dress as a woman at the aunt’s funeral, she begins writing Transparent.She Wants It is a great memoir of how someone hurtles the obstacles of getting a screenplay developed in Hollywood. It also incorporates a bit about Jill’s life as a wife and mother of two. There are many psychological asides about life and her own journey to understanding the non-binary world. I was expecting more about the real-life childhood experiences of having a trans parent. However, for those looking for a Hollywood memoir, this is a good choice. It just wasn’t what I was looking for and I never felt connected to the author though her personal story is heartfelt. 3 stars.Thanks to Crown Publishing and NetGalley for an advance copy.

Given the title of the memoir, I'd expected something different from the author. However, I thought it was less about Desire, Power, and Toppling the Patriarchy than it was about muddling through the writer's love life and an eerily close relationship with Faith, her sister, that she kept alluding to. It all felt oddly disjointed, jumping from topic to topic. Things moved so quickly you couldn't quite get a grasp on the scenes and what was being conveyed.Parts of the memoir were interesting. I was fascinated by how Transparent came to be and how the writer was recognizing her own privilege in writing the show, whom she hired, etc. But some of it felt like name dropping and unnecessary. The end of the novel touched briefly on the accusations against Jeffrey Tambor, which also don't paint the writer in a good light during a conversation with the victim.

I heard about this story from Science Friday on my public radio station. A movie has just been released based on this book, and Ira Flatow interviewed several of the boys who were involved. I quickly ordered the book, read it, and ordered another copy. I gave one to a Hispanic high schooler who needs to get fired up, and the other to a nonprofit that works with kids who have dropped out of school.What the book teaches us is this: The way to re-engage marginal students is not to offer them remedial classes, but to stimulate them with a challenge that doesn't rely upon classroom skills. As soon as they decide that a mental challenge is interesting and important, they will discover all sorts of intellectual skills as they try to solve the puzzle. This is a must read.

I think people should order this book. To me, it's honestly the best book to motivate people to never give up. These four boys had serious blockades in their pathways but they had found ways around it. People in America go through these trials every day and can connect to what these boys are feeling. Some people might be stressed out and give up, but these boys never did- they all thought positive and each had a role with the effort put into building the robot. This story has given me incites into a very difficult situation that exist because politicians in both parties have made it a my way or the highway position on imigration. The number of illegals in the country is far larger than the 12 million number being used and the percentage of Latinos is about 25 to 30% of the total. We lack the resources to vet properly the illegals that are here now and we have to acknowledge the criminals that are here NOW and we don't get ANY substantial help from the countries south of the border due, in part, to corruption and influence by the cartels in those governments. In closing, I don't have a simple solution, as there is none, but we must stop reacting with JUST emotion, we must challenge our perceptions, on both sides, to wrestle toward a solution.

If only this story had caught on in a more timely fashion. But better late than never, I suppose. Thanks to Joshua Davis the story of these four boys got told and the world now has the opportunity to see a little bit of what children of illegal immigrants deal with, through no fault of their own. The story is told in a somewhat journalistic way. But the characters are sufficiently well-developed so that I felt I knew them a bit. Not only is it a story of the boy's struggles, fears and achievements it's a story of inspiration, potential, ability, opportunity and lack thereof. And it's a story of how working together as a team, each part of the team carrying his/her weight and showcasing their strengths for the achievement of their goal, can lead to success.

The story of these boys is both heartwarming and heartbreaking .The characters are well fleshed out.Their intelligence and drive to be accepted as Americans is a sharp contrast to the LA Raza Hispanics who do not seem to want to truly become Americans.It was wonderful the support they got from certain companies and individuals.The 2 teachers who sponsored the team gave so much of themselves to these young men.The hardships they went through after graduating from high school were so disheartening.Even Oscar with a college degree went thru hell.This story puts a real face to some of the problems resulting from our immigration laws.

Captivating book focused on some brilliant young men who with hard work, inmate smarts, team work and dedicated teachers bested the nation's premier engineering schools in advanced underwater robotics. However, the story is sad because presently there is no way for most of the young men who were brought to the US illegally when they were young children to gain citizenship. So, the brilliance of these young men has basically been wasted as they have not moved into stellar careers fitting of their accomplishments and intellect. I'm supportive of legal entry into this country, but for these children there must be some solution. Outstanding book

Wanderlush was a 10-year book in the making. I had been keeping travel notes since our first trip, and in early 2013 (after much encouragement from friends) I decided to commit to writing the book. It was far more difficult than I assumed but I had a blast writing it. Recounting all of the wonderful experiences, and the humiliating ones as well, was so much fun. I consider Wanderlush to be a gift to my mom. She's an amazing person and I wanted to share her with the world. I hope you enjoy.

Observational humor can be difficult, but David Robert finds the right balance in dealing with his past and present life. Can IBS or breast cancer be comical? In the right hands, they can be. He and his family remind me of Neil Simon characters in a play; they are witty, they are neurotic but they have heart. As he climbs the never ending hill in his first trip, I picture him breaking out into the song, "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" just to torture his sister and mother. Take the road trip with Robert, his mother, his siblings and his partner as they travel the world in search of the ridiculous or perhaps the ridiculous is searching for them. Wanderlush is funny and intelligent with a wickedly mischievous and contemporary edge. The book opens with a hilarious chapter that introduces the reader to David Robert’s anxiety ridden mindset and sets the stage for various world travels with his mother, sisters and his partner, Pete. Right from the start I was smiling. Each chapter details his misadventures across the globe and gives the reader a little insight into particular cities. The love between the characters is evident, how else could they get away with teasing each other mercilessly at every possible occasion? I loved how the main character is not afraid to voice his thoughts and opinions on everything from being bullied as a child, his “emotional colon”, to his feelings about children who make noise in his hotel hallway. I can’t wait for another book. What does the main character actually do for a living? How would he describe a vacation where his sister’s children accompanied them? Too funny!

To me, the risk of missing out on an experience far outweighs the risks associated with exploration."The above is basically why I liked this book-The adventuresome spirit captured in this quote taken from the first chapter well foreshadows the entertaining stories to come. The author and his crazy mother (plus a few other companions) go on several vacations which really are way more interesting than most. Each time, they have a bunch of ridiculous and funny stories fueled by their sarcastic, fun-loving nature and booze. What I really loved is that they have this awesome tendency to take any otherwise mundane moment and human interaction into some ridiculous and hilarious little adventure, just in the natural course of their travels.Example of a good funny story to be found within-David takes on an elderly woman in an intense espresso chugging competition in some small town in Portugal (she's the apparent reigning champion)-what ended up happening is hilarious. His mother really makes things interesting. She's a bit wacky and gets much joy out of embarrassing him-One time when he was a freshman in college she secretly crashed his Halloween party dressed as a mummy (This is still cracking me up as I write lol). People who would do these things, write good books.I highly recommend it :)

A few words to describe this book are: Wacky, irreverent, ridiculous, and laugh-out-loud!David's view of the world makes all of his zany vacations turn into trips of a lifetime. Bringing his mother, partner, and sister along turns every molehill into moun-- um, volcanoes of biblical proportions! From his 4-block hill of torture to the hillbilly extravaganza, each adventure makes you laugh a little longer.A fun read, and it makes a great gift, too!

I recommend this book a 5 star. While patiently waiting in a Doctor's office reading this book, time flew by and I couldn't stop myself from laughing. I am sure the other patients sitting across from me thought l was crazy.Without a doubt, recommend this book as a , "Must Read and Share book"Can't wait for his next book to be published.

My wife bought the book for me and I laughed through most of it. I found it very enjoyable and I would (and will) recommend it to all my friends and family.

Funny memoir from a guy who obviously has a great relationship with his family, his partner, and himself. I'd like to travel with them too!

Couldn't put this book down! I loved the way it was written. Such a wonderful story of the love in a crazy family that accepts each other for what and who they are.
