Maybe its the current political climate, maybe it's my own activist mindset but...this sounded like such a great story line in the description but it just wasn't executed well. Please don't get me wrong, I love a good bodice ripper and an appealing alpha male but I had a rough time with this book. The heroine views a playful slap on the rear as actual abuse and then days later sees her female friend tied to a man to keep her "in line" and thinks it's cute how they always argue.Minds don't change this quickly. Also, much like in actual life, the woman in this story does all the compromising and the man...gets a haircut. That's pretty much the sum total of his emotional growth...personal hygiene. Meanwhile, the woman who has lived in a society without gender norms, without men in positions of power, without curse words, meat eating, marriage, physical assault and a whole host of other things for hundreds of years accepts the notion of being a wife, of giving up her entire life and promising career and friends, moves to a foreign land where she's not allowed to walk around without her male escort. And there's not even a sentence devoted to that monumental change in her character's behavior. Maybe that's my main issue, these changes would have been a lot easier to swallow if I understood why the heroine made these choices. She didn't even hesitate, we didn't get any internal dialogue or anything. Just *poof* penises are great now that I have one to play with, nevermind all that established life stuff I had going on.This would have been awesome if they'd actually managed to compromise but I feel like the author was laughing behind her hand at us silly feminists and our notions of equality. It made what should have been a lighthearted read a real effort to sludge through and it makes me want to sit her down and explain internalized mysogyny to her.Give the book a shot, but lower your expectations going in.

take everything you don't like about an extreme feminist and everything you don't like about a chauvinist, throw in some "no means yes" scenarios, and voila- this story!! the only reason it's a 2 star instead of a 1 was because i feel this author is a decent writer and maybe i'll try a different series of hers- but if the H/h are like these, maybe not. . . . . .

MEN OF THE NORTH: THE PROTECTOR by Elin Peer is another unique story with a different storyline set in the future where the roles and the lives of men and women have greatly changed. The primary female character, Christina, is an archaeologist who teaches in the Motherland, a place that is kind, loving and very feminine with a limited number of males who fit that culture perfectly. She volunteers to go on a project to the Northland to lead a dig that will help the men of the North and the rest of the world learn about the ancestors they all came from.Once there, she is introduced to a small group of physically strong and intimidating, macho, aggressive men who lead the culture of primarily men of the North. Although vastly different in every way imaginable, Christina and the man who is directed to be her protector, Boulder, enjoy learning from each other about the other’s culture and quickly become friends. To be her protector, Boulder must also be in a close relationship role and both of them agree to this plan for individual reasons of their own.The story shows the growth of their relationship and how each of them learns and grows in important ways from the other. Initially I found some of their differences so distinct that I didn’t totally enjoy the book, but not only grew to like them both enough that I was completely involved and cheering them on by the end, but also intend to read the rest of Ms. Peer’s interesting series. She is an author whose unique plots are entrancing, intriguing and good for those who are the thinkers and questioners of the world.I received a free ARC of this eBook in exchange for my honest review of it.

The writing wasn't terrible, but the characters were only presented in a shallow way. We never dug beneath the surface. The only character that was interesting to me was Magni, and he probably won't be featured until at least book three. Not interested in reading the next book and will not recommend.

I kept coming across this book on Amazon and the blurb sounded interesting so I decided to buy it. I enjoyed the story, I enjoyed Christina and Boulder and their romance. The sex scenes were fun, not super steamy since the two were basically virgins that only knew how to receive pleasure from a sex bot. The background of the story and the world building was interesting. I loved the Indiana Jones and Lara Croft references. What I found interesting while reading this book is that while their world was destroyed 400 years prior by nuclear war, pollution and posturing men, it mirrors what is happening now, i.e. North Korea, climate change, Trump. What will our descendants say about us in 400 years, agh. I will probably read the next book in the series. Some editing mistakes but nothing too distracting.
