With the baby boomers coming of age, their kidneys are failing and the need for treatment and diet changes is going to change as well. If you, or someone you know, has kidney failure, please remember that diet is a very important part of any treatment plan. This is not a one size fits all cook book. The recipes that work best for you today may not be the same ones that work best for you next week or next month. The right recipes for you will likely change as your body's needs change. With kidney failure, you will find the blood tests that are performed at the dialysis center change. Those test results will determine your diet. One month you may need more or less potassium, for example. As your needs change, so should your diet. The foods you eat and the way you prepare them will make a difference in those test results. Your dietitian can explain more about this to you. I have friend and family who take dialysis treatments and some are permitted certain foods and others are restricted. The foods or restrictions on the diet are based on the individual and their own blood test results and so for any person to write a book that meets the needs of everyone on any given day is just not possible. The author has been a caregiver for nearly 25 years. Most recently to a family member with kidney failure. During the illness, information was, at best, confusing. In this book, he tries to make sense of the differen types of dialysis, diet, kidney functions and more. While this book may be titled Cookbook, it is so much more than cooking. It is understanding the body, and the options available. The author writes this book to provide much needed information to the million people who have, or are expected to, experience kidney failure. In just a few short years, it is estimated there will be over a million people in the United States alone with kidney failure. Many will choose dialysis as their treatment option. Having been through the uncertainties with a loved one, the author wanted to make this information available to those who may need it. Remember the two main causes of kidney failure are high blood pressure and diabetes. Eat healthy and stay healthy as long as you can.

The book is very useful in helping plan meals for those who need to be on a diabetic diet before or while on dialysis.The only week point in the book is that it does not do enough to discuss the nutritional value of the meals (carbs, sodium, sugars, etc.) to add in making sure that you do not exceed daily limits or so that you can make tradeoffs.

I can't believe I wasted good money on this cookbook. While the explanations about the kidneys and dialysis was good almost all the recipes call for ingredients on the no-no list we were given. I was truly hoping for some good recipes for his stringent diet but all I got was a dent in my wallet.

This cookbook help me quite a bit. It took the guess work out of preparing meals for my sister. My sister has been doing dialysis since January 2015. Preparing nutritional meals was a task for me. This book has recipes that are easy to follow and the whole family can enjoy them. The big plus was desserts. We always make room for dessert. This book was a blessing and a good find. Thank you

This book has given me some insight to the renal side of eating for a person with CKD. I like the way it is written and presents the information. The recipes are easy and do NOT have alot of strange ingredients.

The recipient of this book, a person with ESKD who is on dialysis, has told me that it contains many good recipes and cooking suggestions, so it appears to be quite useful. There don't seem to be many books of this type, despite the many people living with kidney disease and the difficulty of the diet.

sodium, potassium, and phosphorus levels (gms per serving) in a recipe are critical concern to renal patients. This feature was absent in this book. If you are trying to create a menu that will stay within a certain daily range of these substances, this book is not very helpful. Would not recommend
