The cat in question is a brilliantly opinionated, unnamed stray kitten that lands in the household of a distracted schoolteacher and his young family. The cat's master is undoubtably Soseki himself, whom Cat describes as a selfish, dispeptic, mustachioed dimwit who doesn't know his own children's ages. (The fact that Soseki was writing and publishing as many as four books a year while suffering from serious stomach ailments that would kill him only twelve years later are beyond the cat's comprehension.) The rest of the household doesn't fare much better in his feline opinion: the schoolteacher's wife is hilariously abstracted; the maid is grotesquely incompetent, and the children, including a tyrannical toddler, are beyond control. Things improve for the cat when the master publishes a short story about him--as Soseki himself did--that gives the animal a measure of fame. Secure in his adoptive household, the lordly cat sits in on his master's philosophizing with his friends, his nonchalant marital banter, and a nasty feud with a rich neighbor. His adventures and hilarious overheard dialogue fill three novels--470 pages in all--covering subjects as varied as baseball, Greek philosophy, literature (not only Japanese but English and Chinese), changing social mores, marriage and suicide. While it's hard to convey the wit of Soseki's prose, it retains a freshness 113 years after publication, something that can't be said for his contemporaries' writing, no matter the language. More startling still is the fact that Soseki the author comes up in one of the master's conversations with his friends--and not flatteringly. The writer-as-character device was hailed as post-modern when Martin Amis tried it in the 1990's, so it's fair to call it post-modern here. "I Am a Cat" is a masterpiece of universal appeal with no equivalent. It deserves to be more widely known.

Although the original Japanese of this book was written over a century ago, I think anyone who has lived in Japan and/or who loves cats would enjoy it. For many years, there was no full English version, and even when one came out and I bought it, I lent it to cheer up an English-speaking lady who was unhappily married to a Japanese man (sorry if that's TMI), and then she went back to her own country or something--anyway, I never saw the book again and couldn't find another one in a store. It was way before the Internet. So now I am very, very happy to have it in English once again.Japanese novels of around Soseki's period, while interesting, tend to be of a rather gloomy cast, but this one is humorous. The author is very famous and this story, which doesn't have much of a plot line, originally appeared serially in the Asahi Shimbun newspaper.

First some technical stuff: I read "I Am a Cat" on the kindle which allowed me to forget it's over 600 pages. The kindle always weighs the same and you can make the text big. I found there were a lot of typos in the beginning. Sometimes I would want to look up the definition of a word but since it was misspelled I was unable to just click on it. Eventually I got so swept up in the book that I stopped noticing."I Am a Cat" is not a plot-driven page turner. But if you enjoy sinking your teeth into each sentence and lingering, then this book is for you. There are so many wonderfully crafted, witty and wise sentences in here, I mean, pretty much the entire thing. This is a rich book.Told from the perspective of a cat who acts as voyeur and anthropologist, "I Am a Cat" follows the cat's master, a school teacher named Mr. Sneaze, and his pretentious, academic visitors in Meiji Era Japan. I had no previous interest in Japanese literature, I just picked this book up out of the blue but I enjoyed learning about the specific social norms and prejudices of Japan in this time period which the book pokes fun at with much wit.The device of the cat telling the story makes for some good jokes and philosophizing about animals' place in human society but a lot of the book is really not about the cat at all. We follow Mr. Sneaze through his mundane daily routines and his interactions with his friends. The dialog is wonderful, with one or two poet characters bursting into Haiku now and then. It made me think a little of Seinfeld in that the characters never learn a lesson- they just keep bantering and getting into their inevitable little mishaps.By the end of the book, not a lot has happened but I had become very attached to the characters and "listening" to them talk. As I read the final two pages of the book I was bawling. I'm not sure if this was because those passages were so, so beautiful, and a different vibe from the rest of the book, or because I didn't want it to end. Probably a bit of both.

This is one of my favorite books on the war in Spain for two reasons. First, it is easy to follow with lots of chapters and sub-chapters. The book also contains many maps to help the reader follow along. The second reason is that this book is very balanced in its account of the war. Many British authors tend to say that the war was won by Britain alone and that is that. Gates says that the war could not be won by either the Spanish or the British alone and gives neither of them the upper hand in who won. Gates even does the cardinal sin of commenting on Wellington's mistakes in the campaign and saying that the French marshals were not all bone heads making guesses. In the struggle between Wellington and Massena he virtually says that Massena should have won if he was on his top game! Gates is a very balanced author in his other books as well which makes his reads enjoyable. In addition he like to take the conflict as a whole rather than an isolated event that leaves the reader wondering what happens next. The book deals almost exclusively with the military aspect of the conflict so if you are looking for that this is your book! If you are looking for the social impact I suggest Esdale's book.

Most military history books quickly become embedded in politics and economics, and in the process fail to complete their analysis of the military aspects of the history.In this book Gates has maintained his focus all the way through the book, on the Military campaigns. Any politics or economics are introduced only to explain logistical difficulties or broad trends in strategic direction.In most English focused histories Wellington is portrayed as some kind of superman who went out to Spain and roundly defeated one French army after another. Gates shows how far this is from the actual truth. He highlights the crucial role played by Peninsular forces, who fielded one army after another to keep the French busy. He demonstrates how the partisan guerilla war prevented the French from concentrating against Wellington to drive him out.At the same time he demonstrates just why Wellington was the greatest soldier of his age. How he used intelligence and patience as his weapons. How he always selected his preferred battleground to gain maximum advantage against the French, who were after all, masterful foes. Wellington was the master of Soult, Ney and Massena, but not by much. He admitted that he would have lost if Napolean had been there himself.Gates lavishes praise on the abilities of the French to survive in the harsh environment of the Peninsula, and at the same time extolls the mastery of the British use of naval support to outflank their gallic rivals.From an Irish perspective it is interesting to note the large number of Irish named Generals fighting for the Spanish, the English and the French. Blake, Clarke, O'Donnell, Lacy and O'Neill to name only a few.If I had any criticism of this book it would be on the way maps are presented. You always have to check which way is north. I prefer when North is the top of the page! Otherwise the large numbers of maps of all scales are a very useful tool in interpretation of the movements in the battles.Gates is also helpful in giving the reader a brief introduction to the tactics of Napoleonic armies, explaining the purpose of line, column and square, the flanking manoevre, use of the reverse slope, the use of Cavalry V Infantry etc. A really wonderful book!

Gates' Spanish Ulcer is a one-volume history of the Peninsular War waged by France in Spain from 1808-1814. It covers all operations in this complicated conflict and contains a map every three or four pages. There is plenty here for the academic doing research, the professional military person learning the origins of guerilla, or 4th generation warfare, or the war gamer who wants to know the terrain and order of battle for a particular engagement. For the casual reader such as myself, however, the narrative is too dense and the descriptions of operations too detailed. I would have personally preferred an account that either focuses biographically on Wellington or the French marshals, or gives a smoother narrative of developments. Such was not Gates' goal, so I won't subtract any stars just because I chose the wrong book on the Peninsular War for myself. The Spanish Ulcer certainly deserves five stars for hitting the mark for those more specialized purposes.

I bought this book as an introduction to the Penisular War. Gates' text was great - covered all aspects of the war, went into enough battle detail to understand the action, but not so much that the story bogged down. I also felt his approach was balanced - Gates' theme wasn't all about Wellington beating down the French at every turn, but how each side gained advantage and disadvantage through various actions.The book's short fall was the maps and diagrams. Frankly, I felt they were of poor quality, and didn't add to the text. Maps were not used to illustrate the often complex strategic moves, but just show where cities and commands were located. Maps were often oriented in a strange manner (ie, north seeking arrow facing one of the sides) which was confusing. Battle maps were very hard to decipher, didn't illustrtate troop movements, and just didn't have a professional feel.Bottom line - great text, with poor supporing diagrams and maps. Suggest having a quality atlas of the Peninsular War handy when you read it!

In reading the Richard Sharpe series by Cornwell, one is left with an incomplete understanding of just how complex, difficult and messy the Peninsular War really was. Richard goes here - problem solved. Richard goes there - problem solved. This excellent book places all of the players in chronological and historical perspective giving the full picture of the military actions in this war. It gives scant attention to the political machinations of the adversaries; but does tie in the ebb and flow of Napoleon's commitment to this open wound on his southern flank. Well written and researched this book is well worth it.

An engaging summary of a terribly chaotic phase of the Napoleonic Wars.

This book was AWFUL!! Filled with abusive sex. Book started with female character being handcuffed to bed. In another part the male 'spanked' her so hard during sex that he stated that she would not be able to sit down the next day. Female character claimed to like this abuse. This author seems to be hung up on sex. Have read two of her books and both were filled with oral and abusive sex. No story line in either book, just elicit sex scenes and enormous amounts of the F word. WILL NEVER READ THIS AUTHOR AGAIN.

He's dealing with guilt over surviving when his partner left behind a great wife and son who he is close to also. While Dante is a billionaire from Boston, he and all his siblings fled their home town and abusive father after his death. Dante had always wanted to be a police officer and followed that dream. He is a homicide detective in LA and his partner, Patrick, has shown him the ropes and been a constant friend for years, until the fateful night when he died while Dante tried to shield his body with his own. Now he is on his way to Amesport, Maine where he and his siblings all own homes to try to escape his loss and heal his mind and body.Dr. Sarah Baxter is an internist who works in Amesport. She started college at 12, finished her PhD at 21 and her residency in internal medicine in Chicago at 24. She has never quite fit into the world around her socially or emotionally but she uses her brilliant and logical mind to try to make sense of everything, even things that defy reason like hormones, sexual attraction and love. She becomes Dante's doctor when he arrives in Amesport. They clash at first. He refuses to listen to reason about what he needs to do for healing, and while she empathizes with his loss, she can't understand why he won't thrive and survive for Patrick's sake, if not his own.Given time, their attraction grows stronger and Sarah refuses to give into it due to patient/doctor ethics. Dante gets around that by seeing another doctor for his medical needs and seeing Sarah for all his other needs. Dante has already decided that he wants to show Sarah all the things she might ever want to know about the pleasures of sexuality that she doesn't believe are true when he finds out that she has her own dark past that has caught up to her in their little home town. A killer that stabbed Sarah dozens of times at her hospital in Chicago has followed her to Amesport, broken into her home and destroyed it, and wants to finish the job he started. Dante, being the strong alpha-male he is, takes Sarah into his protection and home. From there the suspense and the hot attraction both explode. Incendiary sex scenes and dangerous plot twists follow. I don't want to ruin what I know you will enjoy reading, so I'll leave it at that!!This is another great book, and the third in this family of 5 siblings (Grady and Hope have stories already and Jared is next). It makes a fine stand alone book, but there are a few times you get to see previous characters you loved and meet upcoming characters we're sure to learn to love.

When I first read Mine For Tonight, I didn't think I would like any other billionaire but Simon Hudson. He was it for me. Until now. Until Dante Sinclair. He's all alpha male, arrogant at times, oozing self-confidence, stubborn, and extremely difficult when he wants to be, and when it comes to Sarah, over-protective in the worst way. However, he has a right to be. The beautiful doctor was once attacked in a hospital stairwell and stabbed repeatedly. It was a miracle she survived. Now it appears the man has found her and is determined to finish the job. Since Dante is a cop, recovering from being wounded in a gun battle during which his partner was killed, it's only natural he would be the one to protect her, but the truth was, he was falling in love with her. She was unlike any woman he'd ever known, with a genius IQ, an analytical mind that had to rationalize everything out, including sex, and was more worried about him being hurt than the fact she had a killer trying to find her. I totally fell in love with the characters. The elements of danger and suspense only added to the book's appeal. If you haven't read the series you don't know what you are missing.

JS Scott usually delivers a compelling story, No Ordinary Billionaire is no exception. The story is about Police Detective Dante Sinclair and Dr. Sarah Baxter. After Dante was wounded and his partner killed, Dante chose to recover at the family compound in Maine. His doctor was Sarah Baxter. The two don't exactly hit it off.. But as luck would have it, their attraction outweighs the doctors logical mind and her genius IQ, and Dante's hard core shell. No ordinary billionaire was worth its weight in gold...

I really, really wanted to like this book more than I actually did after reading it. The premise is very interesting- an LAPD detective who has more money than he needs and does the dangerous stuff anyway, meets a young doctor who has PTSD from an attack and is hiding from a relentless pursuer: the possibilities are quite intriguing. Unfortunately, the characters are shallow and most of the action in the story is 'between the sheets'. I don't mind some great sex in a story, but the sexual encounters should be garnishes for the story, and not the story itself. After I realized that I was not going to get to know the characters in any depth, I lost interest and finished the story just to get done.

Wow, This book has it all and then some. Both Dante and Sarah have issues from their pasts to overcome, and they don't seem like the perfect couple but the chemistry and fireworks are there. Can Dante overcome losing his partner and learn to live again? Can Sarah overcome not having a childhood and quit seeing things in black and white only? There are so many things I can say about this book, but I don't want to give away any spoilers. The Sinclair brothers are hot, strong, alpha men that meet their match when it comes to a female. J.S. Scott knows how to match up these alphas with a female that stands up to them and puts them in their place when needed. I can't wait for the second book in this series. Definitely a must read!!!

J.S Scott you have done it again!!! I fell in love with Simon and Travis so much that I thought the rest of the series would be second best. I was so very wrong. Dante did it for me!! This one had a sense of mystery and thrill to it I couldn't put it down!! Read it in a day!!! Awesome job J.S.!!! CAN NOT WAIT FOR JARED STORY!!!

The intricate system of laws that protects heterosexual privilege while denying lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) persons the responsibilities, privileges, and benefits of civil marriage is another form of segregation - but made all the more insidious by its apparent invisibility. In her new book, Dr. Davina Kotulski, Ph.D., attempts to persuade us why civil marriage equality is an issue we should all, "give a damn about." This task would challenge any writer, given the immense scope of the subject and the skepticism with which this issue is still met by many well-meaning LGBT activists -- it is one thing to say "1,349 rights, benefits, and protections" but another entirely more daunting task to list and describe them while also developing a cohesive argument.Fortunately, Dr. Kotulski begins with the most important point of all. Second-class citizenship demeans our integrity; it assaults the liberty guaranteed us by the U.S. Constitution -- and the U.S. Supreme Court, it would seem, now agrees with us (just read the fine print of the Lawrence v. Texas ruling). In Dr. Kotulski's words, "The language of love has power, and we have been given a very slim piece of the pie and asked to stay in our corner of the room and eat it quietly ... we live a half-existence compared to our heterosexual friends."Dr. Kotulski is at her best when arguing that "Marriage Lite" (domestic partnerships, civil unions, reciprocal beneficiaries, etc.) is LGBT "Fool's Gold". These legal arrangements are only valid in their native states and most of the responsibilities, privileges, and benefits to which we have been denied access are enshrined in FEDERAL marriage, tax, social security, and inheritance laws anyway (for this reason, incidentally, the argument presented by many of our so-called political allies that this is a "states' rights" issue is a deceptive way of avoiding taking a position at all). And didn't the U.S. Supreme Court already determine in 1954 that "separate was not equal"? Dr. Kotulski offers her most compelling evidence when describing the process same-sex couples must endure to register a domestic partnership in California. The process, much more difficult to traverse than obtaining a simple marriage license, is itself demeaning because it reminds the same-sex couple of their second-class status.Although Dr. Kotulski has made a cohesive argument, the reader must be cautious to avoid missing the forest while wandering amongst the 1,349 trees. This book is best read in small portions; the subject matter is monotonous and tedious. But Dr. Kotulski has given us all many compelling reasons to "give a damn" about civil marriage equality.

This book is very biased. It was hard to read even as a homosexual with intent to marry. I was looking for more factual information to support my argument for a research paper but read a whole lot more overly-opinionated monologue than fact. It felt like I was observing a one-sided argument at the bar.A fun read if you relish in your anger towards the hindering of gay rights, but it won't do much for you if you are trying to make a healthy argument.

In Why You Should Give a Damn About Gay Marriage, clinical psychologist and activist Davinia Kotulski explains in plain language why everyone, gay and straight, needs to give a damn about the issue of gay marriage (a general term the author uses to encompass marriage equality for same-sex and transsexual partners). Marriage affords heterosexual folks some 1,049 federal rights and protections and, on average, 300 additional rights per state. Sure, a committed gay couple could hire a lawyer to draft wills, powers of attorney, medical directives, and a whole briefcase full of papers, but for those to work, they'd have to be toted on every vacation and to every consumer interaction. Many rights remain firmly out of the grasp for anyone who doesn't fit the American image of a marriage for one man and one woman.Kotulski's slim paperback volume lists the rights which are out of the reach of gays and transsexual citizens of America and contains rebuttals to many of the common arguments against gay marriage. Sure, marriage is in the Bible as being between a man and a woman, but that traditional view of marriage one in which women were the property of their husbands, and we've certainly moved past that as a society!Kotulski peppers her book with anecdotes about real-world couples who were denied their basic civil rights and pursuit of happiness due to the inequality in the American institution of marriage. Gay partners can be forced to testify against their spouses in court, while heterosexuals are afforded spousal privilege. Immigration protections and rights do not apply to gay partners. Social Security, life insurance, pension, employer health insurance, and even 9/11 survivor benefits are denied to gay partners in committed, decades-long relationships. In a strange twist of fate, federal ethics codes of conduct apply to straight spouses, but not to gay partners, so the unethical senator could have a gay partner accepts all the bribes he or she wanted! Of course, right now, gays do escape the "marriage penalty" in the tax code, but shouldn't we make them shoulder their fair share of the tax burden?I highly recommend Kotulski's book to all readers regardless of personal or political orientation. Its one weakness is the lack of a cohesive structure - Kotulski wants to describe law, history, policy, and society as well as recount personal anecdotes and give gay readers marriage ceremony advice. If she had limited herself to an academic study of marriage, supported by anecdotal narratives, I would have been able to give this title five out of five stars. As it is, this is an important title to reconsider during the 2008 election season, at a time when many candidates seem unwilling to touch the "marriage issue" in much detail. Kotulski reminds us just why we should all give a damn about gay marriage.

I enjoyed this book immensely, but I have read several books written about Admiral Halsey and I will be honest that it paints this Admiral in a very positive light. There are several books that will provide a more honest image of Admiral Halsey. This book glosses over some of his flaws. For a unbiased account of this famous Naval Officer I recommend books written by John Wukovits or E. B. Potter, I believe that Potters book is the best account.

This was one of the best books I have read on a while. I am ex Navy and was on a destroyer tender and I remember some of the names mentioned in the book. I also was in Admiral Nimitz group.

It is impossible to describe the huge part in winning the war against Japan without speaking of Admiral Halsey. He was the King of the sea, a leader of men, a brilliant strategist and one tough man. This autobiography lacks self embellishment that usually occurs when speaking of one's self. It is straightforward, documented truth including his mistakes as well as his accomplishments. What should have been a story of this hero's life turned into a book full of Naval battles; the battles with the Japanese, the weather and with his own difficult but necessary decisions concerning the men and ships under his command. Any reader that may have past Naval service at sea will eat this up . HURRAH for America's heroes. A five star rating does not do justice to the life of Admiral Halsey. "Anchors Aweigh."

It was difficult giving this a rating. It should be higher, but this version is an unedited OCR of a typed document. It wasn't even run through a spell checker. There are numerous places where characters have been misread, and in some cases words have to be puzzled out. This is a disservice to Admiral Halsey, whom certainly didn't type them that way.

A remarkable autobiography of Admiral William Halsey Third Fleet commander in the Pacific during WWII. Great first person telling of the Naval engagements in WWII during the height of the battles against the Imperial Japanese Navy. A leading proponent of the use of Carriers, Admiral Halsey conducted the fight in his own way and lead his men to achieve great results. Period comments and points of view added an excellent sense of the times to this book.

This biography is written in a style which is easy to read. It was first published in 1947 and written soon after World War 2, so the events were still fresh in Admiral Halsey's mind.I was particularly interested in reading the Admiral's version on the events leading up to his pursuit of Japanese forces in the Phillipines which took him away from the scene of another naval battle, for which he has been criticized. Also I was interested in his account of his fleet during the time of "Halsey's Typhoon".In spite of the need for better editing in the Kindle format, I greatly enjoyed this book.

If you want to be a leader read about leaders. You won’t be disappointed with this book.

I have read many accounts on this same theme. This is one of the best I have found. It is terrific and best of all, it was written by a warrior who was there and knew from past experience just how to proceed.
