I used this book as my only method of studying for the quant section on my 2nd attempt of the GRE and I went through the ENTIRE book. I really felt good about like 80-90% of the material after using this book. But then when I took the test, my quant score only increased by one point. I think the problem was only using this book. It covers most everything you need to know but on a very basic level. I've learned I'm not the type of person that can learn the basics of a math concept and then apply it in a more advanced way. I need to be shown how to apply it. I highly recommend the site Magoosh for quant. It covers everything in depth and has tons of videos, explanations and practice questions. But you will need a lot of time to get through everything. It's not the sort of material you can speed through in a short time span. So if you have at least a couple of months before the test, Magoosh is a good tool. It costs money but I'd say it's worth it. As for this book, if you feel like you just need a basic review to refresh your memory this might do the trick. But if you seriously need to relearn everything like I did, I'd suggest Magoosh.

This book is great for people who need to work on their fundamentals in math. Be warned, the practice problems are easy because it is trying to teach you the basics.

This was excellent for a review of high school math. The explanations were clear and, I feel, taught better than the method's we'd been taught in school. HOWEVER, only a small section of the book is reserved for GRE math. WHICH IS SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT AND WEIRD. I am taking the test again, and using a different study program.

As another review mentioned, this book does a decent walkthrough the basics of high school math. And though the GRE is supposed to test that, it really tests how well you know how to take the test. This book does not prepare you well for that.

The explanations are shallow. Many of them are only useful if you already understand it. Buy Manhattan prep.

Great for the beginning stages of GRE prep. I would recommended buying an additional study guide that offers a bit more challenging and overall relevant content.

Would be best for those who need help with the more basic math.

Grade 2-3-A book that focuses on Lincoln and his Gettysburg Address, providing lively anecdotes about the man's work and responsibilities as president, his special relationship with his son, and about his famous remarks. The text of the speech appears at the end of the book. Fritz's narrative has a strong, fresh appeal. However, there's a lack of specificity in some of the details and a somewhat annoying quantity of sentence fragments. Several archival photographs are interspersed with Robinson's attractive, realistic watercolors. But while it is stated that the crowd is to have numbered 20,000 at Gettysburg, the illustrations give the impression of a much smaller group. A map, which shows the North and South in blue and gray respectively, doesn't include state names. Also, no sources are listed. While readers will certainly enjoy the very human portrayal of Lincoln, it is doubtful whether the larger historical issues will be made clear to them. Since my Kindergartener (age five-and-a-half) had completed the Step 2 books in the Step Into Reading series of books, I decided to go ahead and purchase the Step 3 books. I was a bit hesitant because I noticed there is quite a big leap between the Step 2 and Step 3 books, especially in terms of vocabulary and sentence structure. The vocabulary is more advanced with higher order words, and the sentences are longer. I was also concerned that my daughter might not like the topics which seemed to be more 'academic' with history-based stories. My worries were unfounded. She loves the books and is reading them with very little help from me.These books are excellent for building children's reading skills as well as increasing their confidence. Once you've completed the Step 1 and Step 2 books (I would advise proceeding level by level), the Step 3 books are not as daunting as they might first appear. In "Abe Lincoln's Hat", young readers are introduced to our 16th President. There is a lot of background information provided which makes for interesting reading, and it is pitched appropriately for young readers so as not to overwhelm them. The fact that Abe used his tall black hat to keep papers in is an interesting anecdote that had my little one giggling.I can't recommend these books highly enough - they are great for building reading skills, and also educational. This book is a great introduction to history, and I also came up with a series of short comprehension questions based on the story in this book so as to hone my daughter's comprehension skills (e.g. "Where did Abe live?", "What did Abe do with his hat?", "Describe the kind of person Abe was?").

I had this book in my school library and have given at least 5 copies to grand and great grandchildren. They all loved this story about Abe.

This is an interesting story of Abraham Lincoln and his years of being an attorney. It speaks of his character of fairness and to his sometimes disorganization (misplacing important information). Very humanizing and humorous.

The book is a little long for early childhood children and it's a small size book. I thought it would be larger in size.

My first grade class loved this. It has some standard information as well as a more personal side of Abraham Lincoln.

Unless you are a handyman type already, be sure to buy this book if you want to help your California school kid build that mission that is usually required. I did not have it at the time and am reminded mercilessly of the train wreck of a mission I sent my daughter to school with.

I purchased this book for a neighbor girl who was studying CA Missions and building models of the missions in the 4th Grade. I believe she understands and appreciates the missions much better now.

Great for teaching the 4th grade.

This book was very helpful in building my 4th grade son's mission project. It showed very good hints and tips on how to do certain details of each mission. I have two younger kids that I will surely use when it's their turn.

There were great ideas on how to build your mission and some information for a report. Too bad there is no information about inside the mission.

I found this book (the 2008 edition) in the gift shop at Mission Carmel (aka Mission San Carlos Borromeo del Rio Carmelo, for all you other 4th grade parents out there :-) What a great find. It gives detailed yet simple instructions for building mission models, and accessories such as ovens and bell walls, using cardboard, popsicle sticks, sugar cubes, clay, foam core, egg cartons, pasta, etc. Many different options are described. There are recipes for making your own modeling dough and sand clay. Includes illustrations of what a real adobe mission wall looks like, in case you want to try to replicate it, and of how to layer lasagna noodles to make a Spanish tile roof. Did you know you can tear off the paper on one side of corrugated cardboard, and the corrugations underneath can also make a great tile roof? I learned that here. There are scaled layouts of all 21 missions and lots of encouragement for trying different things. The sample projects look like 4th grade missions, not dollhouses, and the emphasis is practical. Though I'm a semi-crafty person this book absolutely helped us get started, and to do things the easy way! (Though to make it complicated my daughter decided it would be great to do her mission as it looked originally, with a thatch roof and a stockade, so we couldn't use the modern layout, but had to look at the archeological records and old paintings... fun though.) The book also has brief but interesting info and illustrations on mission history and how and why things were built the way they were. Highly recommended.

Amazing book for its time. Not so useful now-a-days because BMS Falcon has gotten A LOT more advanced.It's still useful to learn the fundamentals of flying an airplane and the basics with a little more advanced sections here and there. Short but informative.

“SURVIVOR”“Survivor” is Chuck’s second book published (1999). It’s not as crude as “Choke” and not as subversive as “Fight Club.” It has the same dark humor that I openly laughed out loud at; thankfully when you are reading, no one knows exactly what you find so amusing. Recently it was announced that “Survivor” is being adapted by Jim Uhls (screenwriter of Fight Club) into a television show. I believe the plot and back story are enough to keep this show afloat for several seasons. I will try to keep my expectations low, to avoid being disappointed.The novel is about Tender Branson, a member of the “Creedish Church.” Only firstborn sons and their wives get to stay in the Creedish community; the rest are sent out to work in the “outside world” as servants, to send their earnings back to the church. Tender spends his time scrubbing the home of employers who seek his advice on etiquette but only ever interact with him via speaker phone. (“What are they serving for dinner? Lobster! How are we supposed to handle that?!”)Following a mass suicide of the Creedish Church community and remaining members in the “outside world,” Tender becomes the sole survivor. A smarmy agent develops Tender into a sacrosanct mega superstar mahatma. (“I told the agent I already knew my childhood. Over the phone he said, “This version’s better.”) “Survivor” is a satirical jab at instant celebrity and religion, blended together with helpful cleaning tips, a history of artificial flowers and the hint of love story.If that isn’t enough plot to entice you to read the book, I am sorry. Someone at Wiki practically re-wrote the book on their site, so I’m doing my best not to reveal too much. Each time I read the book I have found new things to love. All of the people I have recommended this book to, loved it and went on to read more novels by Chuck.Favorite Quote: “You’ve never seen a crucifix with a Jesus who wasn’t almost naked. You’ve never seen a fat Jesus, or a Jesus with body hair. Every crucifix you’ve ever seen, the Jesus could be shirtless and modeling designer jeans or men’s cologne.”Or:“Amphetamines are the most American drug. You get so much done. You look terrific, and your middle name is Accomplishment.”

Terrific novel. You can see the influence of Raymond Carver, Hemmingway—really any minimalist writer—as well as Brett Easton Ellis, Thomas Pynchon—and other satirists of pop-culture, celebrity, mass media, and moral decline. I’ve read a few of Palahnuik’s works—and this was my favorite. Some of the line-by-line writing didn’t exactly blow me away—but where this novel shines is in terms of innovation and plot mechanics. The idea of a novel being the recording of a black box on a plane on a suicide mission, the way the chapters and pages move in descending order towards the literal and existential end, and the wild and yet plausible enough series of encounters that befall the last remaining member of The Creedish Death Cult is almost certain to engross the reader. What makes this book so great, above all, is it’s a story you can’t predict—a mad rollercoaster with a pulse—a satire with heart—in short—a work of art. Not sure if anyone is making this into a movie—but it really is a very compelling story that has a great deal to say about the current socio-political moment.

This is a really great book, and interestingly weird in a "I can't put this down even though I have work in 3 hours" way. I love this author, he has super random and interesting ideas, and his stories are filled with great, issue-riddled characters. This particular book, Surviver, stars the last remaining member of a Creedish cult. His name is Tender, and he begins the book by informing the reader that he has just hijacked a plane and will be reciting his life story into the black box, to ensure that it survives an impending crash into the Australian Outback. It then takes you back in time to the beginning. Through a newspaper typo, he has acquired a suicide hotline, through which he indirectly meets a prophetic dreamer. They start a strange adventure together after someone begins offing the last remaining cult survivers. Tender suspects it to be his estranged twin brother. Definitely a fun read & his books are always worth reading, especially if you appreciate dark humor. Chuck Palahniuk is hilarious and creative; definitely give him a try.

This is the 4th or 5th Chuck Palahniuk story that I have read and I have to say that this is one of the better ones. This book has the usual group of weird cast of characters. In this case a surviving member of a religious death cult and a lady with the curious power to predict the future ( after a fashion). The story is told from the 1st person perspective of the cult member,Tender Branson,and is told from the end of the story so that is an interesting twist. Like so many of Palahniuk's story this one is hard to describe without giving too much away but like so many of his stories it speeds to a fast paced unexpected ending that both revels key facts while at the same time leave the reader scratching their head. If you are a fan of this author you will not be disappointed with this book.

This book was written by Palahniuk when he was at the top of his game and is, in this reviewer’s opinion, his second best book (only Fight Club beats it). Hence it epitomizes all that is great in Palahniuk’s books. It is very subversive, Dadaist, anti-materialist and anti-commercial, irreverent, dystopian, scatological (to a major extent – hence the book is not for the squeamish or the faint of heart) and has a very negative view of humanity in general. All and all it would have made a great movie. The author wishes he could discuss the plot in more detail but this would ruin it for those who did not read the book.Last but not least the audiobook is wonderfully read. The narrative brings out, especially, the irony and Dadaist essence of the book through his readings. Highly recommended.
