I am a new French student looking for a practical and simple way to learn French. I love that this book includes a very thorough pronunciation guide to help me know how to speak in French correctly. I also love the grammar and the nice charts to help me figure out which form of the verbs to use in sentences. There are sooo many relevant examples of phrases and vocabulary to use if I ever want to travel to France. Also, I love the idea of including short stories including French and English with questions for comprehension! Wonderful!!! I would highly recommend this book to others who want to learn French!

This book is a great for beginners! I like that it offers how you would pronounce the French words. This book is good if you plan to travel there and want basic statements or questions for traveling in reference to hotels, driving, and etc.

The overall content of the book was very good; it has an english phonetic spelling of how the word is pronounced. It goes over all of the important tenses. Some of the wording is obviously written by a French american, but This is a great place to start on the journey to speaking fluent french. If you memorize everything in this book I would say you are at a European french level of B1.

Is easy, complete, entertaining, and simple to learn .....I would recommend it.....

Took French in junior high and high school I still know how to say the same few phrases I can read French better than I can hear or speak but it is goals to work on for the new year

This book is everything a beginner needs to learn French, with a wide range of topics such as camping, going to the doctor and vistiting a hair salon this book is perfect for someone hoping to visit France or even just wishing to learn the language. This book also contains a thorough and understandable pronounciation guide, making it easy to pronounce the words you learn. If you’re thinking about learning French, this book is the place to start.

This was a very easy to follow book. The grammar was presented in a way that made it easy to understand. The short stories were a great way to practice and improve. The phrases were another useful touch making this a great book for anyone starting to learn French, but also a great book for those with a bit of French already looking to extend themselves.

I'm not a book reader, being a mom of 5 kids and a new grandma I'm always on my toes. but we recently took a cruise and I wanted a warm sandy beach and a book to read. I like true crime books. Although it seems like it was the same thing written over and over again but in a strange way you can't put the book down. Im saddened at the lack of the support from nurses, doctors, social workers etc that didn't follow through with their gut in stinks. They could have saved a beautiful childs life.. how I would have loved to have cared for that beautiful child as my own. it makes you mad at times because friends and family knew but didnt speak up loud enough. but those who did talk to the proper authorities their actions were to late and fell slow to follow through with what this child endured in his short beautiful life.

This is one of the saddest true crime books I have ever read but John Glatt did a great job telling it. The only thing I did not like about it is that there are NO PICTURES. The book tells us over and over about this precious little boy and I was hoping to see him at the end of the book but there were no pictures of him at the end. The revealing of the facts by the author were done in a way that made them easy to follow and understand. Sometimes the details would make me cry. Anyone with a heart will find it difficult to read sometimes, just thinking about the torture this little boy suffered through. It's so so difficult to think of a mother doing that to ANY child, let alone her own son. It's horrible! Just horrible!! I would definitely recommend this book to others!

The doctor suspected the mother put salt in her son’s feeding tube, he did not remover her from his room, and she did it again, after he was stabilized. Then the doctor told the mother how to finish the job— if you give him water, his brain will swell and he will die. She gave him water and he was soon brain dead. Why did the doctor leave this murdering mother in the room with her son? Why did he tell her how to finish killing her son? I was so furious with this doctor I could hardly keep reading. I hope he is tormented over this little boy’s death every day for the rest of his life. He could have saved Garnet. Instead, he left his murdering mother in his room, with instructions on what to do, to finish killing her child.

What urges drive a person, a mother, to slowly but surely kill off her child with successive episodes of depravity? We think we would be able to spot a bad mother, but some, like Lacey Spears, are very talented at hiding their insane compulsions behind a mask of normalcy. John Glatt carefully and skillfully unveils the face behind the mask and we mourn for the fact that society is schooled in 'mind your own business', which results in a gruesome death such as suffered by Lacey Spears' 5 year old son.

This was a story of a mom whose identity was found in being the superhero single mother of a sick child. These women, for they usually aremothers rather than fathers, are either more common today or the syndrome is more readily identified. At least in this case justice was served. The book was very well written. I am sorry for the family, because it is hard to admit especially to oneself, that a person you genuinely love is so depraved.

All in all, it was ok. I can't give it more than 3 stars though, because it is really repetitive. You get the same information about the case at least 3 times. (when it's happening, when it's suspected, and during the trial.) It's not a book you just can't put down by any means. It's actually taken me about two weeks to get through it.

I really like John Glatt and I've read several of his books.(HIS BEST BOOK IS - Lost and Found. Its the true story of Jaycee Dugard)After I read the reviews of "My Sweet..." online, I ordered it right away. However getting through the book (which is 400 + pages of small print) is daunting, to say the least. The incidence of Munchausen syndrome by proxy is interesting topic; it's covered in depth in this book.

Must read for every true crime or psychology buff! I couldn't put it down. Well researched and fascinating, but heartbreaking to read the murder of this little boy by his mother.

#214,545 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I'll preface this review with the statement that I am a scientist, not a philosopher. In fact, this may be the first philosophy text I've ever read (and I haven't finished it yet). I was attracted to it because of an interesting column written about it in the NYT (http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/25/opinion/david-brooks-the-big-decisions.html), and I made the uncharacteristic decision to purchase it. That said, I have found the book thus far to be intellectually and personally challenging. I have also found that it has helped me understand a transformative process through which I am currently going, which I doubt I would have understood, accepted, valued or loved had I not read this book. Transformative experiences don't come along every day, and by the very virtue of their being "extra-epistemic", can be easily feared, abhorred, misinterpreted, and the like. Yet, virtually everyone will have such an experience over a lifetime, and possibly many more than one. Having a deeper understanding of that process, such as can be gained through reading this book, can make a big difference at those times. I thank the author for her work, and heartily recommend the book, even to those who, like me, never quite understood the value of philosophy.

Great book, needed for a class. LA Paul writes a bit circuitously, however her theory is well explained from multiple different angles. If you're looking for definitive answers, this book isn't for you. If you're craving food for thought to potentially expand upon, you'll dig it.

Although the hard copy did not have a cover, it was in great condition! I actually enjoyed not having the cover of the book, because it looked more elegant and mysterious in style.

Thanks

It helps me to develop a process for solid thinking and planning.

This is a curious book. It is excellently written, with a fine understanding of the philosophical problems arising from transformative decision-making - in other words, those decisions we come to that will eventually change our lives. Through a series of case-studies, partly friviolous, partly serious, Paul makes us aware of how difficult such decisions are, both philosophically as well as emotionally. The case-studies include deciding to become a vampire (or embracing the vampiric spirit), deciding to have a child, and (for deaf people especially) deciding to have an implant so as to restore the power of hearing (or to make profoundly deaf people hear for the first time).Paul writes in the second person, addressing all arguments to an imaginary reader. This gives the book a personal, intimate tone that perhaps works against the complexity of the ideas advanced. Sometimes the ideas are a little difficult to follow, especially for readers unacquainted with decision theory. Maybe the book can really only be appreciated by philosophers, rather than those seeking to understand what kind of decisions or ideas help to inspire transformative thinking. What really undermines the book is the emphasis on rational thinking. Personal experience has revealed that many transformative decisions represent a leap in the dark: we decide to change our lives without really knowing what the consequences might be. Such decisions can be bold in the extreme, but they help us develop strategies of coming to terms with new experiences and developing new ways of thinking that are not always based on previous knowledge, as Paul claims. Sometimes that previous knowledge proves unhelpful, especially when we compare the new experience with our previous experiences. These normally turn out to be value-laden comparisons that perpetually change over time.Sometimes the human mind is "unreasonable," prompting us to make decisions which we cannot explain, either to ourselves or to others. We either answer "I don't know," or "it just seemed right at the time." Such responses undercut the basic thrust of Paul's argument that we can find a rational justification for transformative thinking. We tend to let our emotions rule our brains, especially when these kind of decisions need to be made: sometimes we regret them, but on other occasions we are grateful that we set aside our reason and jumped off the emotional cliff instead.

Want to learn how becoming a Vampire applies to your most important life experiences? On a serious note, it gets REPETITIVE. However, the price tag is worth what you will get out of the first 50 pages.

Seeing like a State: How Certain Schemes to Improve the Human Condition Have Failed, by James C. Scott

Review

"One of the most profound and illuminating studies of this century to have been published in recent decades. . . . A fascinating interpretation of the growth of the modern state. . . . Scott presents a formidable argument against using the power of the state in an attempt to reshape the whole of society."—John Gray, New York Times Book Review"Illuminating and beautifully written, this book calls into sharp relief the nature of the world we now inhabit."—New Yorker"James C. Scott has written a powerful, and in many insightful, explanation as to why grandiose programs of social reform, not to mention revolution, so often end in tragedy—the Soviet disaster being the textbook case. . . . He has produced an important critique of visionary state planning."—Robert Heilbroner, Lingua Franca"[An] important book. . . . The author's choice of cases is fascinating and goes well beyond the familiar ones like Soviet collectivization."―Francis Fukuyama, Foreign Affairs"In a treatment that can only be termed brilliant, [Scott] has produced a major contribution to developmental literature. . . . This is a book of seminal importance for comparative politics and, indeed, for the social sciences. Highly recommended."—Choice"Mr. Scott tells the story in witty, sparkling prose of these (Lenin, Mao, Pol Pot, among others) relentless social engineers and how they tried to impose for all eternity a perfect social order or an urban blueprint, regardless of human cost and unremitting human refractoriness."―Washington Times"An important and powerful work that deserves to be read by anyone interested in large-scale public planning. . . . Among the book's virtues are its lucid style, deep learning, and wide range of fascinating cases."―Gideon Rose, Washington Monthly"Where Seeing Like a State is original, and often startling so, is in its meticulous accumulation of empirical evidence that describes the failure of grandiose state projects to improve the human condition."—Brian C. Anderson, Public Interest"Seeing Like a State is a worldly, academic synthesis of the destructive hubris of large-scale rational planning. . . . What Scott does that is brilliant is talk about how states and large institutions acquire the knowledge that they ultimately use to govern."—Michael Schrage, Across the Board"Its global focus, its attention to issues of environment and economic development too often ignored by non profits scholars, and its impressive grasp of how organizations work, recommend it to anyone seriously interested in the future of public life."—Peter Dobkin Hall, ARNOVA News"Scott’s book is a paean to human liberty, a very complicated paean. . . . This book [owes] much of its value to the details of the particular case studies, and to Scott’s enthusiasm and ingenuity in seeing links among apparently different human projects. He has written a remarkably interesting book on social engineering."—Cass R. Sunstein, New Republic"In Seeing Like a State James Scott has given us powerful new paradigms of state action and popular resistance. His work is sure to inspire new thinking and research in history and social sciences."—Fred Murphy, Reader’s Catalog"Brilliant . . . [Scott] has produced a major contribution to developmental literature . . . this is a book of seminal importance for comparative politics and indeed, for the social sciences."—Choice"Scott’s book . . . is an important and powerful work that deserves to be read by anyone interested in large-scale public planning. . . . Among the book’s virtues are its lucid style, deep learning, and wide range of fascinating cases."—Gideon Rose, Washington Monthly"Seeing Like a State is a worldly, academic synthesis of the destructive hubris of large-scale rational planning. . . . Scott . . . takes a few powerful but basic themes and builds a persuasive case against what he calls 'High Modernism.' High Modernism, in essence, is the ideology of grand rational planners whose initiatives are based on the perfectibility of man. What Scott does that is brilliant is talk about how states and large institutions acquire the knowledge that they ultimately use to govern."—Michael Schrage, Across the BoardWinner of the 2000 Mattei Dogan Award 2015 Wildavsky Award for Enduring Contribution to Policy Studies, from the Public Policy Section of the American Political Science Association"James Scott is one of the most original and interesting social scientists whom I know. So it is no surprise that Seeing Like a State is a broad ranging, theoretically important, and empirically grounded treatment of the modern state. For anyone interested in learning about this fundamental tension of modernity and about the destruction wrought in the twentieth century as a consequence of the dominant development ideology of the simplifying state, high modernism, Seeing Like a State is a must read."—Daniel Jonah Goldhagen, Professor of Government and Social Studies at Harvard University and author of Hitler's Willing Executioners "A broad-ranging, theoretically important, and empirically grounded treatment of the modern state and its propensity to simplify and make legible a society which by nature is complex and opaque. For anyone interested in learning about this fundamental tension of modernity and about the destruction wrought in the twentieth century as a consequence of the dominant development ideology of the simplifying state, this is a must-read."—Daniel Jonah Goldhagen, author of Hitler’s Willing Executioners"The 'perfection' Scott so rightly and with such tremendous skill and erudition debunks in his book he himself has nearly reached, as far as positing and presenting the problem is concerned. The case of what the order-crazy mind is capable of doing and why we need to stop it from doing it has been established 'beyond any reasonable doubt' and with a force that cannot be strengthened."—Zygmunt Bauman, emeritus professor, University of Leeds"A tour de force. . . . Reading the book delighted and inspired me. It's not the first time Jim Scott has had that effect."—Charles Tilly, Columbia University"Stunning insights, an original position, and a conceptual approach of global application. Scott's book will at once take its place among the decade's truly seminal contributions to comparative politics."—M. Crawford Young, University of Wisconsin, Madison

Scott begins with a history of the tension between the desire for legibility versus the desire for local control. E.g. central governments wanted to know how much they could tax peasants without causing famine or revolt. Yet even in the optimistic case where they got an honest tax collector to report how many bushels of grain John produced, they had problems due to John's village having an idiosyncratic meaning of "bushel" that the tax collector couldn't easily translate to something the central government knew. And it was hard to keep track of whether John had paid the tax, since the central government didn't understand how the villagers distinguished that John from the John who lived a mile away.So governments that wanted to grow imposed lots of standards on people. That sometimes helped peasants by making their taxes fairer and more predictable, but often trampled over local arrangements that had worked well (especially complex land use agreements).I found that part of the book to be a fairly nice explanation of why an important set of conflicts was nearly inevitable. Scott gives a relatively balanced view of how increased legibility had both good and bad effects (more efficient taxation, diseases tracked better, Nazis found more Jews, etc.).Then Scott becomes more repetitive and one-sided when describing high modernism, which carried the desire for legibility to a revolutionary, authoritarian extreme (especially between 1920 and 1960). I didn't want 250 pages of evidence that Soviet style central planning was often destructive. Maybe that conclusion wasn't obvious to enough people when Scott started writing the book, but it was painfully obvious by the time the book was published.Scott's complaints resemble the Hayekian side of the socialist calculation debate, except that Scott frames in terms that minimize associations with socialism and capitalism. E.g. he manages to include Taylorist factory management in his cluster of bad ideas. It's interesting to compare Fukuyama's description of Tanzania (in Political Order and Political Decay) with Scott's description. They both agree that villagization (Scott's focus) was a disaster. Scott leaves readers with the impression that villagization was the most important policy, whereas Fukuyama only devotes one paragraph to it, and gives the impression that the overall effects of Tanzania's legibility-increasing moves were beneficial (mainly via a common language causing more cooperation). Neither author provides a balanced view (but then they were both drawing attention to neglected aspects of history, not trying to provide a complete picture). My advice: read the SlateStarCodex book review, don't read the whole book.

Insightful, though it's not for everybody. An extended discussion about how government agencies shape the world to accomplish their ends, Very much about the law of unintended consequences. I am no scholar, so I cannot debate his thesis , but I find this book has changed the way way I look at the world, and particularly, the character of government.

To my mind, the central argument of this book is critical to understanding numerous aspects of how the world we live in today came into being, and why it functions the way that it does. I cannot overstate how impressed I was by Scott's ideas, arguments, and evidence. Scott focuses in this book on how these ideas relate to governments and policy, with a focus on agriculture, but are also worth considering for their impact in smaller arenas, such as business, trade, and even family relations. With that said, it is very scholarly in tone. It is not particularly accessible, and fairly hard work to read. I would also argue that the second half of the book could have been shorter by half, and one could probably still get the vast majority of the value of the book by focusing on the first half or so, and skimming or perhaps even skipping the second half.Nevertheless, if you are interested in government, policy, social policy, or even business, I would highly recommend investing the time to read and understand this book.

In a world where governments continually seek to invade personal privacy, control the elements, clump humanity into categories and relentlessly attempt to socially engineer their populations, Scott seeks to make sense of the situation by explaining the why and how behind governmental actions, making "the case for the indispensable role of practical knowledge, informal processes, and improvisation in the face of unpredictability." Perhaps Scott sums it up best when he says, "Much of this book can be read as a case against the imperialism of high modernist, planned social order." Every part of this book is clear and concise. This is a rare gem among modern academia.

This book is essentially a series of discussions of how the perceptual gaps of state apparatus lead to specific sorts of problems, especially when the state attempts to perform large scale, society-changing work. While the book is written by a man who could be reasonably described as a minarchist, it's exceptionally useful to big-state left wing socialists, such as myself, who value understanding why this sort of thing has failed, and failed so badly, in the past.In addition to the educational value, it is an absolute page turner, filled with exciting historical moments that will be brand new to most American readers. I heartily recommend it to anyone.

This book argues that states create simple models in order to understand and regulate society. In many cases forcing society to conform to the model becomes an end in itself. The oversimplification implicit in these models causes various reform schemes to fail. Most of the book consists of presenting examples and variations on this theme.I saw in another review a criticism that the examples were not convincing, which I disagree with. The examples seem proper and on topic to me. They include modernist theories of urban design, the Russian revolution, and agricultural "reforms" in the Soviet Union and Tanzania. Another reviewer thought Scott is making the same argument as Hayek, but that's not really true though they're certainly more similar than the author is willing to admit. My major criticism of this book is that it's about 60-70% too long. There's a lot of repetition and musing that could have been cut.

I love the colors of Jordana's lipsticks particularly the matte colors. They are reasonably priced come up with new colors at frequent intervals and wear as well or better than the more known brands that cost a fortune more. I have been using their lipsticks for many years now, and will continue to do so.

This is a wonderful, wonderful, WONDERFUL book. Ms. McFague has done a more than admirable job of applying Whiteheadian process philosophy thinking to expand our consciousness of the critical need for the greatest ecological concern for every being on our good earth.. Though not a “tree hugger”, after reading this book I have become an evening “tree patter” saying goodnight and good wishes to a tree which is most likely the oldest tree on the grounds of my “Home”. Of particular significance is the author’s use of eliciting a belief in God as a procreationist-emanationist. I interpret this as God’s love for all of creation, from the Universe to the smallest flea. It will literally take your breath away, which, of course IS God’s gift to us.

fantastic writing.

I am not religious or spiritual, but this book gave me a good perspective on why some spiritual people are not enviromentalists... and why htey should be. I quote it all the time.

This ecological theology makes the best sense of all the eco-theologies I've read. Her inclusive organic model can be used by men, women, lesbian, bisexual and gay people. This opened a new way of thinking for me that can make a difference not only in my life but hopefully also in the lives of the South Africans I will come into contact. But most important it changed my understanding of my place in the universe and in our beautiful country. Do yourself a favour, buy this book and study it. But be warned, your patriarchal mindset will be shattered. I really enjoyed this book and I am looking forward to study her other books that's on their way. Thank you Sallie.

Excellent book

Sallie McFague (born 1933) is an American feminist Christian theologian, who has written other books such as Super, Natural Christians,Models of God,Metaphorical Theology: Models of God in Religious Language, etc.She wrote in the Introduction to this 1993 book, "The present essay... attempts to look at everything through one lens, the model of the universe or world as God's body... (a model) that is neglected, essential, illuminating, and helpful both to Christian doctrinal reformulation and to planetary well-being." Later, she adds, "Body, then, is the model I suggest we investigate thoroughly as possible for an ecological theology." (Pg. 17)She concedes, however, that we can accept reductionism as a successful method of research as well as the physical base of all levels of nonliving and living entities "and, at the same time, opt for the holistic, organic view as the picture of reality or metaphysics with which theology should be in conversation." (Pg. 93) She suggests that the model of the body of God "can serve as a unifying metaphor, encompassing in scope both creation and salvation---the liberation, healing, and fulfillment of all bodies." (Pg. 135)She argues that "we should not use natural evil as a smokescreen to hide the real ecological problem: human selfishness and greed... biological and cultural evolution---or natural evil and sin---are now inextricably joined with us. The distinction between them is blurred, for natural evils seldom occur in our time withour human complicity. And it is the latter for which we are responsible and that lie within our power to change." (Pg. 177)Starting from the "Cosmic Christ" image, she states, "Our model is unlimited at one end and restrictive at the other: the entire cosmos is the habitat of God, but we can know this only through the mediation of the physical world." (Pg. 182-183)This book will be of interest to persons looking for creative modern approaches to theology.

good transaction. came fast and as described.

This was a useful book if Ecofeminism is your subject. It was one of the recommended books for the Radical Readings module of Exeter University's Theology degree. It does give another voice to add to the inevitable Rosemary Radford Reuther's. Unfortunately, I managed to accidentally purchase two copies so if anyone wants one - let me know.Ann Butcher
