Very nicely written, a must have for engineers.

Good product: clean and rapid deal.

Overall the book covered the material well. However the book was somewhat difficult to follow. It took a couple of passes to clarify what was being said.

good quality and timing for delivery.

Great topic. Not so great a publication but, good enough to keep for the information's sake.

I am amazed at the shear number and details of the many experiments Newton performed on light. His conclusions drawn from these rather simple experiments are astounding.

All that I expected.

For the price, I was very pleased to find this book in such great quality. I am so thankful I was able to find it as simply and easily, and it arrived well-prepared. (a thank you note and care felt around the book!)Thank you!

Review

"Writing in the popular style of world history seen through the lens of a commodity, Duke professor Salzman details the changing approaches that environmentalists, governments, and the open market have taken to this essential of life. Through exploring core questions in water management--whether people have a right to access drinking water, whether it "should be managed as a commodity for sale or a public good," what it means for water to be clean and safe--Salzman lucidly addresses controversial topics, such as the Clean Water Act and what it does and doesn't ensure about the safety of our water supply; risks from arsenic contamination and fracking; the benefits of system wide versus point of use purification; and whether it helps or hurts communities to sell access to their water sources to private corporations...Salzman puts a needed spotlight on an often overlooked but critical social, economic, and political resource."--"Publishers Weekly" "Salzman (Law and Environmental Policy/Duke Univ.) looks at the history of drinking water and how it is connected to a range of global environmental, social and political issues...An appealing, fact-filled overview of the most basic necessity of human life."--"Kirkus Reviews""What do Rome's aqueducts, Napoleon's death, and the pilgrimage site of Lourdes have in common? Excellent presentation of lots of research. I am an old retired civil engineer and I have always found that the general public in the developed world takes it for granted that he can just turn on the faucet and receive good, safe drinking water. The book is a history of drinking water and does not get into technical water treatment details. Salzman presents great historical cases showing that it takes consistent attention of dedicated professionals to monitor and protect storage and provide treatment and distribution systems so we can have good, safe drinking water. I especially recommend this book to all who are contemplating third world humanitarian drinking water projects. The most important and often most difficult task is to convince the receiving users that a good drinking water system is not free after the helpers leave. Many good efforts have failed after a few years because the local receiving community did not properly shoulder the responsibility of creating a body that would collect ongoing funding to pay for treatment and maintenance costs after the humanitarian funds were expended.

I ordered this book because I hoped to learn more about acceptable salt content in drinking water. Historically, where I live on the dry side of the island of Hawaii, water has been a scarce commodity. Brackish ponds were a source for early Hawaiians. It has been hard to find information on what people can really tolerate as far as salt content of their water source. Anyway, I found the book very interesting as it examines water as resource versus commodity from various perspectives: historical, political/legal, psychological and economic. Especially interesting was coverage of the bottled water craze. As a baby boomer, I have been amazed at the increased consumption of bottled water. I was also interested in his statement on p. 183 that "Bottled water is less stringently regulated than tap water." And as a back country hiker, I have watched the change from freely drinking out of mountain streams to utter fear of sipping even the purest looking water. When he opened with "Mother McCloud," I was immediately hooked on the book, as I know the Mt. Shasta area and how people treasure their water. This is true of many mountain communities. The author gives many excellent examples of how both knowledge and "feelings" toward a water source can greatly influence the acceptability and desirability of the water. He covers every level of desirability from the fountain of youth to processed sewage. Certainly, the primary concern for much of the world is water as a limited resource. The "Need Versus Greed" chapter gets at the essence of the resource issue. Because of the author's legal background and perspective, his examples of controversies around water issues are concisely and clearly described. A very worthwhile read for those is concerned about the source of their water.

Through the prism of this seemingly simple commodity, and with a wit as sharp as his narrative balance is smooth, Salzman focuses our attention on drinking water's complicated past and consequential future. Exploring the ambiguous phrase he claims as his title, Salzman illuminates the surprising depths of this seemingly shallow substance. Amongst the many essential ideas new to my understanding of the politics of water, Salzman's discussion of the consequences of the roles played by women and girls as "water bearers" in many developing countries has made a powerful impact. Opening with the aptly-named story of "Mother McCloud" as he does, the book, on a closer read, shows its keen political and social consciousness, something that has been a refreshing surprise amidst the other pieces I've read on related subjects. I'd recommend this book to readers who enjoy the following: historically-informed thinking, a dry wit, balanced journalism, mindfulness in politics, and clear-eyed story-telling.

The other books by Salzman are more interesting, this one if a bit too full of facts and statistics and is not as compelling a story, I am only half way though it and might not finish as other things have taken priority. This tells you something, usually a very good book keeps my attention. Salzman is a great writer, but this is not his best production.....

I work in the environmental compliance field and this book was a good non-fiction source of information to just conversant in the topics surrounding water. Water gets a lot of attention and the authors treatment of the many controversies was fair. I skipped over most of the water myths chapter. This book actually made me want to attempt to write a nonfiction book.

I consider this book an indispensable part of the library of any serious lay reader of science. It presents a balanced and well-researched overview of our human relationship with drinking water. It is eminently readable yet scholarly; thoughtful without being ponderous. One of the best books on the subject, I have gifted it to numerous friends.

good little history, keeps your attention and told in a story format

Salzman writes in an understandable way. his thorough research about drinking water yielded a fascinating book, covering millennia of water usage and dependence. The historical, socio-political factors governing who gets water is a lesson for all of us.A ' must read' book!

For me, title was misleading. Maybe "Picking a Scope" in the titleI was hoping for information on using them in the hobby.I already have my scopes, so it wasn't money well spent by me

Definitely for beginners, maybe. Unfortunately, the author does a disservice to the radio amateur by concentrating mainly on digital oscilloscopes which, realistically, unless you can afford a very, very good one with an extremely high sampling rate, are next to useless for working on and aligning RF circuits. The computer usb 'scopes he touts, while fun to play with, are not suited at all for the radio amateur. But,maybe I'm speaking of the radio amateur of the past, who actually repairs his own commercial gear of yesteryear and also builds his own transmitters and receivers. This book never actually shows you what you can DO with an oscilloscope in the hamshack. A better book for buying a 'scope and using it (and a bunch of other test equipment, too) is "How to Diagnose and Fix Everything Electronic" by Michael Geier. In other words, there are better resources out there (including the internet) than Oscilloscopes for Radio Amateurs. 73 de Rick WQ8Q

The book is a good review on how 'scopes work. Only about 25% of it relates to ham radio. I don't need the whole history and how the 1950's scopes work; I can get that elsewhere. Precious little content on ham-specific issues.

Covers the history of oscilloscopes and provides an overview of how analog and digital scopes work. This will help you decide what features to look for if you want to buy a scope. However if you want a book that will explain in detail how to use scopes in ham radio, this may not be for you.

This has a bit of background about scopes in general but close to nothing about what you might do with them in the context of amateur radio.

Reviews history and basics but not much on practical application for beginner

Being an instrument person I enjoyed the book. My only issue was for me it was at times it was to basic. For others it will work fine with good explainations of the issues with oscilloscopes. A good read.

I am going to buy an oscilloscope to use in my Ham Radio Shack. I have used them in the past but the technology has changed dramatically over the years. It would be a mess to buy an oscilloscope only to find out that it misses the mark. This book has really filled the bill! I have read it from cover to cover and now feel like I know what to look for and how to use it when I get it. Many thanks.

I must have been living under a rock when Molly Bloom’s story came out because it wasn’t until I saw the movie Molly’s Game that I heard about her. Then I came straight home and read her book MOLLY’S GAME: THE TRUE STORY OF THE 26-YEAR OLD WOMAN BEHIND THE MOST EXCLUSIVE, HIGH-STAKES UNDERGROUND POKER GAME IN THE WORLD like my life depended on it. Ok, wow. Molly’s got game and then some. Here is what I can tell you because, no spoilers. Plus, Molly is the storyteller here.Molly comes from a family of high achievers. She is no slouch. A champion skier, brains to match, fresh out of college with plans to attend law school. She has been on the go since she was a little girl and wants a break in between. Her parents don’t agree. She heads to LA, on her own, and lands jobs to pay the bills that lead to her first poker game with the big boys and she likes what she sees. Molly is not a gambler, nor does she have any interest in the game. It is all about the connections and she knows an opportunity for a legitimate business is looking right at her. With equal parts passion and drive, Molly achieves more than she imagined. Then things came to a crashing halt. Find out what happens after that. I have much respect for her. She is protective of people, to a fault, and most likely you will come away from the book, with a very, very bad taste for some people, who are named. As Molly tells her story, you will be turning pages as fast as a dealer pitches cards in the air.

Saw the movie before reading the book. I must say that as usual, I should have read the book first then see the movie. Nevertheless, the book is much better and gave more details and actual people than the movie. Jessica Chastain is a great actress. Her body of work is a testament to her talent. All in all, the book written by the actual Molly Bloom is a joy to read. I learned a bit about poker but really, I don’t gamble so it’s for knowledge only.

Molly’s Game by Molly Bloom is, from the author’s point of view, a true account of one woman’s remarkable ability to see opportunity and innovatively carve her own empire out of a niche previously dominated by males. Many of the males were hustlers, conmen, professional poker players, and members of criminal enterprises such as the Mafia or the Russian Mob. While male members of the mentioned groups all seem to have shadowy or incomplete backgrounds with little regard for anything described as a moral compass, Bloom decided to take a higher road. She did not employ criminal enforcers to collect a player debt. She did not resort to vicious gossip strategies to destroy the reputations of reluctant payers. She took a more relaxed, feminine approach. She simply cut off their rights to play. Sounds like a stern Mommy figure. Why should she be telling the truth in this novel? We don’t completely know that she is but we have indications that lead one to believe what she has said/written is the truth. Without an independent investigation, we might never know if some things were left out. Lying by omission is still lying. This is a work of non-fiction. There are names of high-profile celebrities, sports figures, and wealthy businessmen which can aid those who want to investigate further to corroborate or refute information Bloom claims. For me, Bloom’s credibility rings true after a look at the final plea agreement and sentence imposed. Some in the judicial system believed her because the only jail time Bloom served after initial arrest was while she was waiting for bail to be posted. Many people do not realize that in a nation with fifty states and a federal system there are at least fifty-one systems of law that cover different activities, in this case, gambling. Violation of federal rules brings a suspect into a federal court anywhere in the United States. A person can violate State law and be brought into State court but there are fifty different standards which are why lawyers pass State licensing requirements. Bloom consulted lawyers and was careful not to violate laws against illegal gambling. She did not take a portion of winnings (gambling term: “the rake”). She did not charge management fees. Those kinds of things might be illegal. She did, however, accept gifts or tips. Essentially, Molly Bloom was an event organizer.Bloom does not write of her plea bargain as far as probation, community service, or fines. For that, go to Wikipedia and the sources listed at the bottom of the Wikipedia page. As with others who deal in vast sums of cash money (millions) Bloom seems to have attracted the notice of the IRS. The fine levied against her was small compared to the cash flow she indicates took place during her event organizing. Any account of dealing with the IRS belongs in my favorite genre: Horror.Bloom recounts her childhood in a family of superstars, super performers, and a controlling, demanding father. Molly claims that she just wanted to be acknowledged as being good in her own right. Placing on an Olympic Ski team might seem worthy of accolades. This memoir reveals that her accomplishment, after recovering from serious disabling surgery such that doctors said she could not do what she in fact accomplished, did not garner the positive reinforcement she desired. She decided to listen to a different drummer.I found her story amazing. There is no course or set of instructions she could follow to accomplish what she did. It was personal bravado, persistence, and chutzpah that allowed her to succeed. What brought her down was a combination of petty jealousy and true criminal activity on the part of some of her acquaintances. She was truly judged on the basis of the company she kept. I gave this four Amazon stars.

Absolutely loved this book. I saw the movie first with my family and we all left the theatre completely obsessed with Molly Bloom. We spent the entire dinner afterwards reading her entire Wikipedia page and that night I bought the book on kindle. I wholeheartedly recommend this book - it was an incredible story full of power dynamics and strong boss ladies. It's impossibly to not become fully engrossed in Molly Bloom's story!

Molly's Game was an easy and interesting read about Molly's unexpected but skillfully managed rise to the top of the private poker world in LA and NYC. The book's title however should have instead been Molly's Cautionary Tale since it was very apparent that Molly put herself in the middle of a world of greed and materialism where she was in way over her head and very fortunate to have survived with her life (although almost didn't!). In doing so she sold her soul and ultimately became consumed by greed and materialism. The FBI indirectly did her a huge favor by pulling her out of the middle of a world where it was destined to not end well for Molly. Hopefully this will serve as a major wake up call for Molly so she can now use her considerable talents to do good in the community as an executive director for a non-profit organization serving the disenfranchised rather than wasting her time managing poker games for the morally bankrupt rich and famous.

Caravan of No Despair: A Memoir of Loss and Transformation, by Mirabai Starr

Review

“A memoir about writing through a devastating loss. Years of work on a book, especially your first, make the day of publication a special occasion. You can't put such effort into a project without feeling a deep satisfaction when it comes to fruition; some writers compare it to welcoming a new child. Starr's (God of Love: A Guide to the Heart of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, 2012, etc.) first book, a translation of Dark Night of the Soul, came into the world in 2002 on the same day a police officer showed up to tell her that her daughter had died the night before in a car accident. The author understands that her spiritual journey can be best understood by setting the stage, introducing the players, and exploring the stories of the people she would turn to and rely on through the grief to come. As such, she writes about her convoluted upbringing. ‘The prevailing language of our extended family was sarcasm,’ she writes, ‘and everyone seemed to have concluded that I was linguistically impaired. When my feelings were hurt (every few minutes, it seemed), that was because I had no sense of humor.’ Surrounded by her family's substance abuse and open relationships, Starr turned to Eastern spirituality early on. She worked as an assistant for famed spiritual teacher Ram Dass, but another spiritual guide took advantage of her adolescent innocence and tricked her into a sexual relationship, followed by a predictably degrading marriage. Starr takes a curious, almost journalistic approach to relating these events of her early years. There's no sense of judgment of anybody who contributed to her tumultuous transition into adulthood. Also curious is the seeming disconnectedness of the first half of the book from the second half, but she brings them together toward the end, linking her spiritual travails to harrowing writing about her grief over her daughter. Difficult reading at times, but the sometimes-scattershot nature of the book fits the chaotic nature of the author's grief.” —Kirkus Reviews“From the moment I began Mirabai’s personal story, I could not put it down. Though every word is the truth, her journey to becoming the brilliant mystic and writer she is today is as compelling and gritty as a great piece of fiction. I honor her for sharing her life so openly and so honestly. This is a magnificent mind-body-soul trek that really does lead to God.” —Caroline Myss, author of Anatomy of the Spirit and Sacred Contracts   “This is a wonderful and extremely moving book, by far the best memoir of loss and rebirth that I have read. Mirabai Starr has given us—in the plainest and most raw and pure form—the essence of what it means to transmute extreme suffering into new life.” —Andrew Harvey, author of The Hope: A Guide to Sacred Activist   “Mirabai Starr’s Caravan of No Despair is a heartbreaking, raw, vulnerable, and beautifully poignant memoir. And yet it’s so much more than that. This book inspired me—as I believe it will anyone who reads it—to go deeper into my own broken pieces while cultivating greater fearlessness and compassion for myself and others in the process. This is one of the most heartfelt and truth-inspiring books I’ve ever read. Thank you, Mirabai, for this gift.” —Chris Grosso, author of Indie Spiritualist: A No Bullshit Exploration of Spirituality and Everything Mind: What I’ve Learned About Hard Knocks, Spiritual Awakening, and the Mind-Blowing Truth of It All   “Mirabai Starr is a wonder. Nearly unique in her heart’s cradling of so many saints and adepts in her previous dozen highly regarded biographies, now, thankfully, she shares a biography of her own heart and the transitions, losses and insights, darkness and light, that so evidently brought it all to the surface. A deep bow for her generosity sharing her climb up the loose rungs of Jacob’s Ladder.” —Stephen Levine (Who Dies, One Year to Live, and Kuan Yin) & Ondrea Levine (The Healing I Took Birth For)   “Caravan of No Despair is a stunning memoir from author, poet, and teacher Mirabai Starr that portrays her blossoming into a modern day mystic. But when her young daughter Jenny tragically dies on the day of publication of Mirabai’s first book, Dark Night of the Soul, everything she has learned about spirituality fails her. As Mirabai goes through her own dark night, she brings us deeply into her mystical surrender to grief. We transform with her as pain becomes healing. Mirabai has given us a precious compass to navigate the waters of loss with grace. Bravo!” —Annie Kagan, bestselling author of The Afterlife of Billy Fingers: How My Bad-Boy Brother Proved to Me There’s Life After Death   “Of the many—I think too many—who accept the name of spiritual teacher these days, Mirabai Starr is one of the few I personally know whom I would trust with a beloved daughter or son if I had one. And to me that is saying a lot. I don't think she can lift the Sun from her purse—from her heart—whenever she wants and place it into another’s pocket (as a great saint could), but I feel God trusts her, and that many can benefit from reading this book and personally spending time with her.” —Daniel Ladinsky, bestselling Penguin author and poet   “Caravan of No Despair has all the force and radiance of the story it tells. Mirabai Starr describes the loss of a child with unrelenting heart. Then, just as you feel that you will be lost with her in the searing pain, her grief opens a gate through which love and beauty pour out in streams of light. Beautifully written. How rare to find the words to describe such depths of being.” —Paula D’Arcy, author of Gift of the Red Bird and Waking Up To This Day   “So deep and real. Thank you, Mirabai Starr, for letting us share your journey through the darkness of despair into the open sky of love.” —Krishna Das, bestselling chant artist and author of Chants of a Lifetime   “It’s more of a roller coaster than a caravan, so get ready: Mirabai Starr’s gorgeous new book will leave you reeling. It’s not just the dizzying ascents and the terrifying freefalls, although both are in plentiful supply, it’s the extraordinary framework she provides as a seer, a seeker, and a pilgrim on the holiest of paths.” —Lara Santoro, award-winning author of Mercy and The Boy   “A life-giving story with strong narrative drive and humor thrown in at exquisite moments. Fine, detailed writing. A clear-eyed journey through the grief of loss and of youth snatched away too early. Starr has created a beautiful, inspirational telling of a life that speaks to us all.” —Natalie Goldberg, author of The True Secret of Writing   “Love is a fire. Grief is a bellows that fans it to white-hot intensity. When that fire burns out, what’s left may be ashes and desolation. Or it may be the distilled incandescence of a soul. Mirabai Starr lives that inferno of grief and emerges annealed to a new alloy of spirit. She draws water from a well of love and compassion to temper the blazing sword of wisdom. She brings that wisdom—from saints like Saint John of the Cross and Teresa of Avila and Neem Karoli Baba—into immediate experience. Through her we see how one may barely begin to bear the unbearable. Mirabai’s memoir is poetry of the spirit, of a mother’s loss, and of the renewal of a heart’s connection beyond the body. She doesn’t paper over despair; she comes to terms with it. Caravan of No Despair is a rainbow tapestry of spiritual teachings from Christian mystics, Sufi poets, Buddhist monks, and Hindu gurus. Such teachings don’t end; they just keep on beginning.” —Rameshwar Das, coauthor of Be Love Now and Polishing the Mirror(with Ram Dass)   “Like all great memoirs, Caravan of No Despair is a one-of-a-kind story sung in a melody that touches every soul. Mirabai’s journey carries us through Rumi’s heart of paradox, from unspeakable pain to sublime blessings, at once profoundly human and ecstatically transcendent.” —Philip Goldberg, author of American Veda: From Emerson and the Beatles to Yogaand Meditation—How Indian Spirituality Changed the West   “Caravan of No Despair is a shimmering offering from a heart that’s been broken open by life and death. The holiness that tears through these pages doesn’t come from a mountaintop, lofty ideas, or a meditation cushion, but instead from revealing the almost unbearable joy and pain of being wholly human. Baring her all, Mirabai gifts us with a darkly luminous love story and we are forever changed as a result.” —Sera Beak, author of Red Hot and Holy: A Heretic’s Love Story   “This book, a little miracle, arose out of Starr’s recognition that grief, if experienced to the fullest, might open the soul up to something very, very holy. Her breathtaking story filled me with courage and joy I didn't know I had. This book will forever change the way we think not only about dying but about being alive.” —Demetria Martinez, author of Mother Tongue   “Mirabai Starr has written a compellingly moving and heartfelt memoir of profound loss and spiritual transformation. As an inter-spiritual bridge-builder and translator of the great mystics, Mirabai brings unique and profound insights to her life’s journey, including her counterculture childhood and her daughter’s life and tragic death. A deeply revealing book that transcends pain to become an inspiration.” —David Frenette, author of The Path of Centering Prayer   “By turns heartbreaking, lyrical, humorous, and poignant, this caravan carries not a hint of despair. Calling all mystics and seekers to get on board!” —Sean Murphy, author of One Bird, One Stone: 108 Contemporary Zen Stories and The Time of New Weather   “An absorbing story of love and loss, Caravan of No Despair brings the depth of a mother’s grief and healing fully to life. Mirabai’s open heart and growing wisdom shine through the telling of her own story.” —Sharon Salzberg, author of Real Happiness "From the memorable title to the memorable ending, you will be haunted, attracted, and transformed by Mirabai's integrity and message. Plus the writing itself will carry you along! Don't miss such an opportunity, such a grace, and such a ride!"—Fr. Richard Rohr, OFM, Center for Action and Contemplation

I struggle to find words to describe the deep beauty of this heart-rending, gorgeous book. It grabbed me from its first pages—which I read standing up—and, over just a few days, carried me through to its powerful end. Caravan of No Despair offers that rare gift: a window into someone else’s life that is so illuminating that we feel ourselves in the world in a new way.Mirabai Starr tells about growing up in the 1960s and 70s with spiritually inclined, hippy parents who let her find her own way amidst great personal loss and all the confusions that go with childhood. Seeking genuine spiritual growth, Starr exposes herself to the exploits of an older man who offers himself as a teacher and lover, and struggles to live through the tortuous years as a wife and soon mother. The center of the book is about her relationship with her daughter Jenny, whose loss digs to the core of Starr’s bones.Starr writes with incredible precision and perceptiveness. The book is a testament to literary elegance. She is also bitingly honest—about her own shortcomings and the cruelties of those around her, and about the interior experience of loss. In this latter regard, Starr offers vocabulary with which readers will recognize their own feelings and be able to touch them in a more profound way. I have rarely cried while reading a book but, in this instance, I often had to wipe away tears so I could keep reading (and frequently smiled at Starr’s depictions of humorous events and of her own naiveté).Although about loss, the book is actually an embrace of life. Starr writes about the universal story of trying to be human in a world suffused with much pain. Reading it tore at my heart but ultimately touched my soul. When I finished it, I stared into space for a very long, beautiful time.

A mystic is someone you will follow anywhere—not without questions, not without doubts—and trust with your spiritual and physical life. In this age of faux gurus and self-help barkers, it is difficult to connect with someone authentic. Mirabai Starr is truly a mystic in the deepest sense of that overused yet magical, exhilarating word. The greatest spiritual teachers have always come into their authenticity through healthy doses of reluctance. Buddha wanted to know; he wanted that more than he wanted to teach. Jesus begged God to lift his burden from him. Joan of Arc wanted only to serve her country and return to her village. The Dalai Lama often reminds interviewers that he is just a man who loses his temper, yells at people and does things every day he regrets. Starr is right at home in this illustrious company. Her new book, Caravan of No Despair, consistently delivers what memoirs have such a hard time doing—presenting not just what happens, but also recreating real, suffering, sleepwalking and exhilarated human beings. One of the world’s most sought after inter-spiritual speakers and the celebrated translator of renowned mystics such as St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila and Hildegard of Bingen, Starr has led an inspiring, richly textured and cinematic life. Born to radical, politicized Jewish parents steeped in the 1960s antiwar and civil rights movements, buffeted by the deaths of her beloved older brother and first love, enduring the break-up of her parents, spending a girlhood of communal living in south America and New Mexico, and surviving more than a decade attached to an abusive mentor and teacher, Starr’s story would be memorable if it ended there. But all this was only her beginning. What followed was her search for her life soul mate, her adoption of two daughters and her gradual acceptance and embrace of a life of service. That acceptance, as it does in the lives of all leaders, hinged on a signature moment or turning point. For Starr, the death of her daughter, Jenny, created that moment. As a world traveler, experimentalist and Jewish agnostic, everything Starr had learned to that point became suspect. She doubted the existence of a higher power, distrusted her meditation practice and self-help gurus and wondered if there really was any compassion or sense to life in this realm. Her dark soul-night opened and expanded and stretched on and on, breaking her down and cracking her in pieces. The tale of her endurance swim to healing and acceptance is as inspiring as the story of her destruction, and her ability to overcome or make peace with her spiritual reluctance will comfort many and may provide an epiphany for others. If anyone in film reads this or is listening, where is the movie of this journey? There are other delights awaiting the reader. Starr is also a poet capable of creating evocative sentences like this: “Friends had gathered like strands of grass and woven a basket of waiting.”; or “Each body that walked through that door belonged to a hand that kept me from drowning.”; or “The most vexing flavor on the grief menu was bargaining.”; or “Only in Taos, I said. A channeling maître d’.” No matter the stage she is sharing in her long journey, Mirabai Starr is always exquisitely beautiful and human. She is mystical, yes; she is more than us, she is less than us, she is one of us and she knows it. I cherish my heart/soul connection with this gorgeous book, and I bow to its author. You can trust her, I know, with your physical and spiritual life.

Searing, stunning, gripping and spilling over with love. Mirabai Starr shares her personal walk through the fire in the death of her daughter. I couldn't put this memoir down, and read it almost in one sitting. Having this author open her heart in such vulnerability touched me deeply, and moved me to a place where I reflect on our common human family, our humanity that knits us together, and the pain and broken-heartedness that (paradoxically) is our strongest healer. Whether you are a spiritual seeker or simply a lover of a gripping story, you will enjoy this book.

This book is less about death and longing than it is about strength, love and the pure non-judgmental, unconditional, appreciation of life in all its names and forms. A coming-of-age story, from page one we are on a journey! Together we navigate the tricky unpredictabilities life presents to all of us. While thoroughly entertained by colorful trappings of a wonderfully eclectic community, I grew up right alongside my narrator. Solid effort all around! The winter selection for our book club, I was concerned "Caravan" was yet another pretty and precious women's book. I was wrong! This book was written by a wise warrior. Brave, honest and exciting. I read all 300 pages in two days, could not put it down!Mirabai Starr is in peak form here. Trust that her keen eyes and unflinching bravery will not bog us down in sentimentality. It was the most honest thing I've read all year. For that, more than anything else, I found myself in tears much of the book.I highly recommend this to anyone. Book clubs take note!
