I bought this book for a class but I enjoyed it so much I kept it and have referenced it several times since.

I have purchased several books by Merwin at the recommendation of some of my close friends, one of whom is a poet and really likes his writing. I have read and reread some of his work and just find it difficult to follow or even connect to at times. He does seem to have a way of viewing the world that is unique and sees it through the eyes of a poet. I say that in an appreciative way. There are meanings to his words but it almost seems at times like someone who is detached, perhaps too contained as he sees it, maybe even phlegmatic, devoid of passion or emotion. I am honestly not knocking his writing. It is deep and thoughtful. He constructs his words as a craftsman and I think he is an important poet to study. I just found it difficult to stay with his train of thought and find myself rereading sections too many times so that it breaks the flow. In some ways he reminds me somewhat of T.S. Eliot, whose work I adore, so I'm not quite sure why Merwin doesn't strike the same chord with me that Eliot does. My friends who love his writing obviously don't share me view, and again, I think that's the beauty of poetry, some of it connects with some people, but for others they can't.

This is a brilliant book! I am very satisfied with seller, as the book was accurately described and arrived on time.

I am a poet - I love poetry, but Merwin has my soul wrapped up in his work and I refuse to unwrap it.

Images of nature no where nearly cover the symbolism Merwin's poems have. Figurative phrases can be found through out. The mind longs to read them again in their extended absence.

Our library, unfortunately, has had all its copies of this book stolen. S, it had been awhile since I had enjoyed reading it. Very happy to add it to my Merwin collection!

Do not buy this book if you own horror! 333 films to scare you to death, for they are the exact book. They switched the cover and flip flopped the authors names, other than that it's the same book.

FOR KINDLE VERSIONIf I could give zero, I would! There are zero graphics or pictures in the kindle version. I would not have purchased it if I had known this. Buy the print version only.

Must have for horror fans!

I bought this for my Ex-husband for Father's Day and he loved it. He is a collector of all things horror related and this was the perfect gift to add to his collection.

My brother is a huge horror movie buff. I bought him this for Christmas, and he loved it. This is saying something. It is comprehensive and fun.

"Horror" is an extremely juicy look at some (200ish!!) of the most influential horror movies to have graced the silver screen since the advent of the moving picture. A lot of familiar titles appear in this decade by decade critical analysis but it is the inclusion of a large number of world cinema and independant titles that really pushes this into the "must have" category. A well written, thoughtful and highly entertaining read that should be seen as a primer to the humoungous "Nightmare Movies" that the author has written! Great Stuff!!

This isn't an academic review, it is an intensely personal one. Girard's insights have changed my life. I am not the same person I was before I read and understood him, and I feel like this helped me to understand Jesus and the scripture in a way that felt like like a second (or third? or fourth?) conversion.I have heard people say they "don't get it," and I'm not sure why, although I do know that the concepts weren't necessarily easy to confront. Girard is talking about mechanisms that occur every single day, in (quite frankly) every single relationship. It's not overly complicated or written in a particularly difficult way, but it's like any concept - hard to learn until you learn it, then you can't understand how you lived without it.Furthermore, the concepts Girard introduces in this is book have equipped me to better respond to a large variety of difficult scenarios and situations. People are complicated. Understanding basics like scape-goating and the social dynamics of victimization can give you wisdom in scenarios where everyone else has lost (or is losing) their head. The church needs people like this!If you are lucky enough to have a group of folks who want to dig deep, do this as a book study with other people so you can discuss it together.

To me, Girard is always a difficult read. Not because he doesn't write well, he does, it's that he is so far out into a new frontier (that is part, anthropology, philosophy, and theology) that it is difficult for him to put into words what his mind is seeing. The words available to him in the English language to explain how Jesus conned Satan and exposed him for the lying murderer that he is are found to be wanting. It may be that I don't have the smarts to immediately grasp what Girard is trying to communicate, but I have read a large portion of his works (some I had to read more than once) and I get it. Sort of.What he has discovered leaves me overwhelmed by what Jesus did for us. Jesus didn't just bring a new kingdom of the heart to the world; he also kicked the legs out from under Satan's kingdom without Satan ever knowing what was happening. The great liar just couldn't see the subtle power of the truth until it was too late. If this sounds odd or unfamiliar, then welcome to Girard's world and put on your thinking cap and read this book. It's got some good stuff in it.

As I continue to research and write about the violence of God in the Old Testament, a reader of my blog told me to read Girard. So I bought most of his books and am working through them in the order in which they were written.By far, this is the best and most lucid book from Girard. In it, he not only includes the best explanation of mimetic theory I have read so far, but he then ties in the accompanying themes of the scapegoat mechanism, how Satan casts out Satan through violence, and how Jesus reveals all this to the world through His ministry, life, death, and resurrection.If you are wanting to understand mimetic theory, this is THE book to start with. You may not even want to read Girard's earlier works, as this book both summarizes and clarifies everything that Girard has been writing up to this book.

A challenging and thought provoking book that must be taken seriously by anybody with a brain. While I don't accept Girard's exegesis regarding "Satan casting out Satan" as being something of an affirmative riddle by Christ, the concept of "mimetic" cyclical violence being something of man's fallen human condition, and how Satanic forces lurk in the background, hiding in plain site, and making use of this violence to further their agenda, only to be exposed by the death of Christ on the cross, is quite a powerful concept. A good read, even if the translation is less than stellar.

It's a tough read with much substance. I am usually a quick reader, but this book challenges ones thought to the extent that I can only read a few pages at a time as every page generates questions/ideas that require perhaps some research elsewhere. It would be a great book for a discussion group to those interested in patterns of human behavior against a historical background. It's like watching a movie play over and over again in different situations, cultures and centuries, and never learning from its lessons.

I purchased the Doubleday Roget's Thesaurus for my Kindle. I do a lot of writing, so I purchased it so I could have access to variations or synonyms of words.This e-book does not function correctly with the Kindle. As opposed to the original dictionary supplied with the Kindle, when you type in a word to search for, the records returned does not lead you to the actual word entry and location itself. Rather, the Kindle just returns locations to every instance of the word but not the actual word followed by synonyms. If I search for 'air' for instance, I want the kindle to go to the actual location of the word "air", followed by the synonyms for that word, not instances of the word in other words. This is a broken e-book.Don't purchase this unless you want to scroll forward and backwards through page after page trying to find the word you searched for. This e-book should be taken off the market until it works correctly with the Kindle.I gave this book two stars because it's at least alphebetical and thank goodness for Amazon's return policy. I called customer service and it promises to refund my purchase price.

This is the best thesaurus currently available for the Kindle, in my opinion.When you type in a word and press the centre of the five-way (you don't even have to click on 'find'), you are given a selection of references, by location, where the word appears. You can click on the header for each location to see if it is one that you want to use (if you cannot tell right away, from the amount of context provided); if it doesn't fill your needs, press 'back' and go to the next location.The only seemingly awkward part of this is that once you've done one search, you have to do the next one from where you were last; just feels counterintuitive, although it works very well.Best choice for the Kindle, for sure!Edited to add: Do give your Kindle time to index the thesaurus before you try to use it; it may take a while!

Sadly this book does not deliver the goods. I have tried over and over again to utilize this as my main word source but ithas all gone for not. This book is just Okay inits's paperback version but a Kindle version, it fails miserably.

I am a crossword puzzle fanatic and recently purchased the thesaurus. Both the dictionary and the thesaurus on my Kindle have been great resources. I am a retired teacher and enjoy writing and feel that both books are a great idea and so much better than lifting the heavy dictionary or thesaurus and scrolling down pages of words to find just the right word. I would recommend both the thesaurus and the dictionary to anyone who likes to read, write, and/or do crossword puzzles.

I have used Doubleday Roget's Thesaurus in Dictionary Form for 30 plus years. I started using it in college because it was easy to look up words in the dictionary format. I continued using it in my career as a writer. I cannot imagine writing letters, speeches, etc. without it. Now that I have retired, my wife uses my old Roget's Thesaurus for her crossword puzzles and loves it. Between the two of us, we wore it out. This new edition is as good as the previous one. If you think you will write something, I highly recommend it. If you think you will use it a lot (as I did), you might want to get the hardcover version. As I mentioned, my old hardcover Thesaurus lasted over 30 years.

It is a good thesaurus if this was in print form. However, there are no navigations like the built in dictionary in Kindle. I've tried to search for a word by typing it, but there is no search bar to type for your exact word. I also tried the "Go to..." function if there is at least a Table of Contents that split up each alphabet, but none like that. The closest thing for a word search would be the "Search This Book" option, but that will have multiple location results because the word "discover" is in Location 122, 567, 890, 2546, 7890, and does not locate the exact word.Is there a Thesaurus that is built like the one we have for Kindle where there is a word search bar?
