I loved that this book didn't follow a dynasty or even a championship team; these Suns were hobbled by injury andego and didn't even make the NBA Finals, which makes the read a bit more interesting. McCallum has access likeno other writer i've ever read as he basically becomes a trusted member of the staff, which allows for some verypersonal looks and conversations. The book shines a favorable light on Coach D'Antoni, which is someone I wasnever sure about, prior to the book. It changed a lot of perceptions I had, be it good or bad, about certain members of this team.The word count McCallum uses trying to explain the inner workings of a pro athlete, especially a fringe athlete, issome of the best writing; realizing these guys are scared of injury, of better players, of rookies, of coaching changes.It's fascinating stuff, reading the inner-politics of a team trying to win, as opposed to the more common "reflectionby a winning team on what it was like to dig deep and win".Excellent basketball writing; i'd consider it in the same class as Season on the Brink in terms of it's access and the connection you begin to feel with certain members of the team and staff. A Must read for any above-average basketball person.

I'm an SI subscriber, so I've been reading Jack for years in the magazine. I was looking forward to this book ever since I put it on my wishlist, and I wasn't disappointed. They gave him really great access, and the coaches seemed to relax around him and give him good quotes. He has a smooth and engaging writing style, which works great for wriiting about sports.And he did not treat the players like Gods, and that was very key. He made Shawn Marion look like he was, your typical insecure semi-superstar, and allowed Amare Stoudemire to appear as the clueless, under-educated athlete that he is. Reserve guard Eddie House wound up being the star of the book, player category, he's very entertaining without coming off like a jerk.A couple of quibbles:Jack really does not like Mark Cuban, and takes as many shots at him as he coould. Makes a person wonder if he tried to float this book idea by the Mavericks and was turned down.The other, far bigger gripe, is that the book was too short. It seemed that he rushed it to get it out quickly, and thus the focus so much on the playoffs, with the preseason and regular season not touched on much. I know that this is paritially a compliment, wanting the book to be much bigger, and I mean it that way. It just seems rushed.All in all a great buy, well worth the money I paid, and I got it right here at Amazon.

A great, well-written and funny book exploring what goes on behind closed doors on an NBA team.If you're looking for a book that delves into players affinity for clubs, booze and girls, then you'll have to look elsewhere. The Suns are a pretty clean club, and I'm sure they've done some stuff that isn't included in the book. What is included is an insiders look into the thought processes of coaches and players and discusses how the relationships within a professional organization can affect the win-loss column. There are some solid perspectives on team chemistry, ownership, the role coaches play in the success (or failure) of a ball club, the pressures of the playoffs, the psyche of the pro athlete (who knew someone making $20m a year could be so sensitive), how marketing efforts can affect a player's attitude and much more. I kind of wish the Suns would've won it all in 2006 so that this book could've been longer. Also, you don't have to be a Suns fan to appreciate this book. I'm a die-hard Pistons fan, and found this read very enjoyable.On thing to point out: there's some swearing in this book (a few F bombs and the like), so if you're a parent thinking of picking this book up for a young Suns fan you may want to browse the pages beforehand. Otherwise, there really isn't anything worse than that, though.

I'm going to keep this short, because I know I hate when people are too wordy with these reviews. This is probably the best book about the NBA lifestyle that I have ever read. You really feel like you are part of the team, traveling with them, experiencing the ups & downs of a winning season/playoffs, and you really feel like you know these guys (especially the coaching staff) after you finish the book. I know this might sound crazy, but that is just how well written the book is. I also have to give a ton of credit to Mike D, the coaching staff, and the players; something tells me that with any other group of guys this wouldn't have gone as well, but since these guys were all so willing to open up and let a journalist become part of their team...well the result is really something special. So basically, if you want to know what went on behind the scenes with the Phoenix Suns during their run to the Western Conf. Finals and basically just what it feels like to be part of a coaching staff everyday on an NBA powerhous, then buy this book...I guarantee you won't put it down until you're done.

Great NBA book. Even if you're not a fan of the Steve Nash Phoenix Suns or Mike D'Antoni's coaching (guilty as charged on the 2nd), this book gives you a good sense of what coaching and game planning look like behind the scenes. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. The book mainly progresses game to game during their playoff run, with a few regular season games sprinkled in here and there to refresh the viewer. Jack McCallum does a great job at writing in general.

Finished the book in 2 days, amazing read, and well written. You laugh at the pranks,and player banter, and you see the daily struggles of life within a bright spotlight. You see Nash crying at a long season of overcoming doubters and pouring everything into this team and still coming up short of the NBA finals. You see a team, that was always doubted in there skills, there ability and there desire, but rising to challenge after challenge.This book makes you feel apart of the team, and part of the inner circle and of a very special season. Jack McCallum is one of the best sports writers in my generation.

I love this series. We really got into this after the movie came out. The graphic novels are COMPLETELY different and I think thats one of the many things I like about it. I have never been a comic book/graphic novel person but my husband really wanted to try this one. I couldn't put them down. When we were finished reading the last we had to have the next one. They are great!

Katya's virginity was being sold to Hunters boss. Hunter was sent to collect "Katya" the so called package. Katya decided to give her virginity away to a stranger, in order to make the deal null and void. The book contained some heated and detailed sex and oral sex scenes. The Hunter character was ok. He was a starved, tortured and abused killer, who was raised by a vicious man. He was a brain washed boy, who did what he had to do, to survive. My issues with this book. The Katya character. Can never get enough of Georgia Le Carre!!! I love all of her books including this one!! I always stay up late reading her new releases and cannot put them down!! This was a sad and beautiful Russian love story, that was intense, sexy, smart and so romantic plus Hot!! Loved it!!! Loved the cover too

If you are looking for something different from other romance novels, this is it. It is a little dark but there is so much love between both characters. The only thing i would have liked is to have a more extended ending. It was too sudden. Although you are not left wondering, you want more details.

[KU loan]Another case of a novel that started out with promise before going off the rails. I’ve read 4 of this author’s novels and liked them, but that was then and this is now. The writing here is amateurish and inconsistent for such a heavily published author. The dialogue was inconsistent and sometimes stilted. And those unbelievable plotholes defied common sense.I absolutely loved the setup of both characters. It starts out as an edgy and ill-fated romantic adventure, mostly taking place in Siberia. County girl virgin Katya (18) is part of a special program of selected village virgins sent to America for Russian mobster Anakin each year. Anakin’s henchman Hunter (24) is sent to collect a package in Russia, unaware that it’s Katya. When she begins to fear what might actually await her in America, she decides to break the deal by losing her virginity. The random hookup turns out to be Hunter. That sets an adversarial relationship in motion when both discover their connection to each other the next morning. I was expecting a really intimate, one-on-one journey out of the Siberian blizzard they encounter that would draw them together, but it was more obstacle-filled from nature and rapey villains. The life-threatening conditions mired the couple in their own heads too much, as Katya wonders how she’ll escape her fate and Hunter fights his feelings for her to do his job.They’re both pitiable figures – Katya’s family being forced to survive by selling off their daughter to someone unknown; and hard-hearted Hunter being the brainwashed victim of cruel training all his life by brutal Anakin. For Hunter a job must be finished, and a promise is a promise. He’s somewhat of a robot on a mission. But, those things become hard to reconcile with Katya on his mind, and who will his final promise be to – Anakin or Katya?My hopes were high, but the constant inner thoughts without opening up to each other til later was disappointing and everything went downhill during the journey. There are instances while stranded in the blizzard that are contrived or defy logic. Didn’t know that people could survive so long without food or proper clothing or exposure to the elements in life-threatening temps – they should have frozen to death on foot; and Hunter had the same clothes for a week because they abandoned their suitcases without explanation. They can barely survive with an inadequate fire for warmth, but no problem ripping off all their clothes for sex on the freezing floor. At one point, he takes a log off the log "pile", but it’s the last log. Huh? That kinda stuff. At roughly 65% the narrative sounded completely different, as if written by someone else. Out of nowhere, Hunter started talking in heavy Italian mobster slang for the rest of the book, although he’s Irish and works for a Russian. The constant use of the word “Goomba” was bizarre. After leaving Russia, the couple’s feelings instantly develop over an incident at the train station that had me shaking my head as THE catalyst. And, I never believed for a moment that Hunter, given his harsh background, had the finesse to pull off Katya’s Pretty Woman moment with him at an upscale hotel. The ending was expected but rushed with some truths about Anakin and his plans for Katya, as well as how the couple deals with him. Overall, the writing was a strange blend of style -- superficial, flawed, and often illogical. Sad that it didn't sustain the initial momentum.

You're captivated from the first sentence. Your attention is totally focused on all the twists and turns and unexpected surprises that seem to shoot out of every crack. Action packed, heated scenes so realistic you feel the breeze off the bullet that just past. You are hanging on to anything to ground yourself to find some sanity still there. You can't help but feel a kinship to these characters as you start to understand their personalities that transforms the relationship. Hard and fast rules. You got their back and they've got yours. So sweaty, hot sultry scenes that hit it hard and on the edge. I have to really admire Georgia cause this is so straight up its like living it. Georgia brought this straight from hell to life so smooth and seemless and just that good. The characters are complex, believable and so realistic with such depth and individuality it feels like you can just reach out and touch them. The scenes are written with such realism it's easy to picture each scenario as they play off one another in perfect balance. This book presents itself as a sociological study of the Modern Orthodox Jewish population in North America. Included are discussions of this group's religious attitudes and values, its voting patterns, and its orientation towards American society and culture in general.Unfortunately, this book's basic approach to the subject is so fundamentally flawed that you are more likely to be misinformed than to learn anything when you read it.For one thing, the authors took almost half of their statistical data (490 responses out of 1023) from questionnaires answered by members of the Lincoln Square Synagogue in Manhattan's Upper West Side, a truly vibrant congregation with dynamic adult education and outreach programs, but obviously not representative of the rest of Modern Orthodox community in New York, or anywhere else for that matter!But the main problem lies in the categories of religious observance Heilman builds out of thin air, and upon which he bases his arguments. Most of the discussion focuses on a middle group of Modern Orthodox Jews, which Heilman confusingly terms the "centrists," despite the fact that he uses the very same term in other places to refer to the Modern Orthodox population as a whole. To make his middle category, Heilman groups people who are completely religious but still eat cold salad with non-kosher utensils (when visiting friends' homes) together with people who turn on lights on Shabbos. Heilman excludes members of this category from the "traditionalist" right-wing group merely because they will eat cold salad on non-kosher dishes, even though that act is often completely permissible even according to the strictest interpretations of Jewish law! We can understand why, as Heilman admits, many respondents found the survey's questions problematic and wrote lengthy notes to explain their answers. (Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that the book makes much use of their clarifications.)The result of this is to create a large grouping which will necessarily appear ambivalent and divided over key issues of religious dogma and behavior. So it comes as no surprise when only 54% of this group "agree strongly" that "the Torah was revealed by God to Moses at Sinai"! And since Heilman doesn't give us any statistical breakdown within his made-up categories, it is impossible to know how many of the strictly observant do NOT feel strongly that the Torah was revealed at Sinai, and thus any useful inferences or insights that we might have drawn from the responses are lost and beyond retrieval.Another general problem with the book: Although it is indeed true that members of the so-called Modern Orthodox community are likely to be less punctiliously observant than their "right-wing" brethren, Heilman seems to believe that all Orthodox Jews who actively engage and participate in wider American society are NECESSARILY ambivalent about basic Jewish law and theology. In many sections, he seems to confuse and lump together more strictly observant Modern Orthodox Jews with the "picturesque" ultra-right-wing Orthodox. It would seem that according to his categories, most of the theologians and scholars of Modern Orthodoxy wouldn't be considered Modern Orthodox.The usefulness of the book is also severely limited because it doesn't even include the text of the questionnaire. (Although an appendix with the exact wording of the questions is promised in the text, none can be find anywhere in the volume!)In conclusion, this book is simply not representative of the talents of Heilman, who is one of the world's leading sociologists of the American Jewish community.

While this book does have some minor shortcomings--such as a restricted sample and neglect of the "ultra-orthodox" wing of Judaism--I still give it five stars, in part because the authors have done us the rare favor of delving into the subject of how a traditionalist, religious subculture can not only survive but thrive in the midst of an alien dominant culture. It was not that long ago when assimilationist Jews and non-Jews alike were confidently predicting the inevitable demise of traditionalist Judaism... Yet at the same time there were other Jews who foresaw that the assimilationist or integrationist strategy could only lead to extinction. They imported traditional Jewish rabbis from the old country to lead their communities and funneled as many of their children as possible into Jewish religious schools, which the authors regard as decisive for traditionalism's unexpected success. Consequently, their faith remained sufficiently intense and their social cohesion and collective identity sufficiently strong to maintain birth rates comfortably above replacement level, high rates of religious observance, and low defection rates, even while their more secularized counterparts saw their birth rates plunge to a level persistently below replacement and their children begin to outmarry at a high rate. Not only did traditionalists defy the integrationists'confident prophecies of doom, but they seem to be growing even more traditional; that is, judging from the sample used for this book, the younger generation is actually *more* religiously observant than their traditionalist parents... Although the literary style of this academic treatise is dry, I very highly recommend it to anyone interested in the survival of embattled or endangered subcultures...

This book uses a highly unscientific survey to divide a group of Orthodox Jews into "traditionalist", "centrist" and "nominally Orthodox" categories. Though the survey doesn't involve a truly random sample of Orthodox Jews (and thus does not create useful data) it still reminds us that (a) there are all kinds of ways to be Orthodox but (b) even "nominally Orthodox" Jews tend to be more observant than non-Orthodox Jews.

When I purchased this book I was looking for advice on how to begin and lead change within an organization. Honestly, I expected another repetitious look at management theory. However what I actually got was so much more than what I had hoped for.The Science of Successful Organizational Change delivers on what the title promises; pulling from scientific perspectives to give a much wider view of what causes change within organizations to both succeed and fail. It also takes a very honest look at what success and failure really look like as well as what the costs of both are.While Gibbons pulls from several scientific disciplines by far the most intriguing part of the book for me was the portion where Gibbons forces his readers to take a very hard look at the psychology of risk and risk behaviors. He requires his readers to ask themselves if they are “doubling down” on a losing business scenario or displaying other destructive tendencies when it comes to risk. He walks his readers through what those behaviors are and offers easy to understand examples of what they look like in the real world.After finishing the book I felt better informed and more empowered because I was more self-aware of my own tendencies, both positive and negative, and felt as if Gibbons had given me a road map to successfully change myself so that I could bring more to the constantly fluctuating business landscape.
