From Paralysis to Fatigue: A History of Psychosomatic Illness in the Modern Era, by Edward Shorter

From Library Journal

Shorter (history, Univ. of Toronto), whose most recent books include Bedside Manners ( LJ 3/1/86) and Women's Bodies (Transaction Pubs., 1990), here catalogs the aches and pains of countless legions from the 18th century to the present. His hypothesis is that "historical eras shape their own symptoms" of illness and that "these various paradigms greatly influenced the way patients presented psychosomatic illness to their doctors." It's a run-on litany of vapors, hysteria, weakness, exhaustion, fatigue, loss of ambition, low vitality, weak spells, neurasthenia, and sometimes just your "garden-variety somatizer such as would be found in any medical practice." The question of to what extent the times and culture influence the socially correct expression of physical and mental ills is not without interest to several scholarly fields, but this reader was plum tuckered out by the end.- James Swanton, Albert Einstein Coll. of Medicine, New YorkCopyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Edward Shorter provides a much need perspective on the current crop of psychosomatic symptoms that are being treated today as if they are based on structural anomalies in the knee, shoulder, lower back etc. etc. Shorter shows how these same kind of symptoms occurred in the late 18th century and the 19th too because of the proliferation of fanciful medical theories, like spinal irritation and reflex neurosis, that allowed patients to come up with symptoms that matched contemporary medical theories that were, in many cases, pure quackery and fanciful speculation with high sounding academic names. The question the reader begins to ask after reading Shorter is whether such modern diagnoses as spinal degeneration to account for back pain are really much more clinically scientific than the theories about the origins of back pain proposed by the medical establishment in the 1830s.A very insightful work of medical theory that forces the reader to ask the disturbing question: Just how far has clinical medicine advanced since the early Victorians? Disturbing when you begin to notice how so many of these aches and pains are confined to a specific middle-class milieu where patients have sufficient funds and leisure time to be treated for symptoms of diseases without germs.

Along with Sarno's "The Divided Mind", this is one of the most important books I have read in my life. It persuaded me that my 9 years of struggle with chronic fatigue (some prefer Myalgic Encephamolyelitis) could come to an end. It enabled me to glimpse how one's personality type interacts with culture and with contemporary beliefs and attitudes to shape the expression of one's suffering. I must credit one more person here: the Dutch researcher Hans Knoop, whose research articles and methods also contributed to the "inner shift".The book is easy to read and perhaps my background made it easy to understand too. As Sarno says, psychosomatic illness is real and it affects all of us. I wish I had known this years ago but perhaps like so many others, I might not have found the insights in this book palatable back then. A word of advice if you suffer from chronic fatigue: let go of your anger when you read this book. I find that anger is one of the most common obstacles to recovery.

Too bad this isn't required reading for all doctors!! Hardly anybody believes this stuff - but it goes on all around us resulting in millions of people hooked on pain pills or getting needless operations.

This book has 100 pages of sources and notes, some of them dating back to publications from the 1700s. It's truly a fantastic contribution to psychiatric history. That there is the trolling camp out there of "Myalgic Encephalomyelitis" that 1-star bombs all books that make any mention of the Fact that people can (obviously) contribute to their own fatigue, is unfortunate. Amazing how much energy they have to leave these reviews on literally every book in this field...

The author has successfully applied an historian's long range perspective to currents fads and trends in health care. His view will save us from the laughter of our grandchildren and perhaps keep us and them from making the same mistakes over and over. This is history that is useful today. History as a prescription for todays ills.

This is a very well researched book which is also very easy and pleasant to read. The author has scoured libraries for contemporary accounts of psychosomatic illness, mostly from physicians but sometimes from patients as well.Shorter describes the history of psychosomatic illness from the first written accounts up to the present day. In doing so he shows how theories have changed over the centuries, and also how the symptoms themselves have changed as patients unconsciously "choose" which symptoms will be believed (although I have my doubts about whether or not this is actually the case). The book contains many accounts of psychosomatic illness, some of which are quite entertaining (although probably not for the patients themselves). My only criticism of the book is the lack of science. Shorter doesn't try to give any theories about the nature of psychosomatic illness and seems to think that all psychosomatic symptoms are simply generated by the unconscious mind, which can change them at will. This seems to go against known physiology, which shows that certain psychosomatic reactions (such as the defecation response to fear) are hard-wired into the nervous system and happen in animals as well as humans. Perhaps there are different types of psychosomatic illness with different causes and different physiology, but Shorter doesn't address this. While this isn't a major shortcoming for a book that only professes to discuss the history of psychosomatic illness, Shorter does give the impression of having a mildly negative opinion of the "somatizers" he describes.Overall, however, it is a very good read and I couldn't put it down. For anyone at all interested in psychosomatic illness this book is a must-have.

This is the rare textbook that gets right to the relevant information. It's not over-produced with page after page of elaborate graphics or other fluff that adds nothing to the learning experience. The different financial statements are broken down in a manner that makes the organization and logic of the various financial statements clear and easier to understand. This grasp of financial statements is one of the most useful things that I gained from my MBA. This book shows that a book does not need to be elaborate to be effective. While this book is useful, it's price is excessive. Sure, I had to buy it for my class. That doesn't meant that I should have to spend over $100 for a paperback book. Maybe they're just trying to offer us a lesson in market selection. Why publish books that people buy for leisure when you can publish books that people are compelled to buy. That certainly changes the motivation to purchase.

Was required for a graduate school class. I know a majority of the material this book covers as it was a part of my undergrad major, however, I still think it is laid out well and doesn't waste your time with unexessary info or fluff.

This is a useful book for a better understanding financial statements. It provides information that is useful for Board of Directors in both non-profit and for profit organizations.

Recommended read as part of my MBA program. Great reference book for finance and non-finance professionals to have a reference to understand the flow of financial information through statements. Good for analysis or financial preparation

Accounting book... hmmm not much else to say... the book arrived in excellent condition with no marks

Got the help that I needed with the course.

The book provides a basic understanding of financial statements, and the terminology used within the field. Glad, I purchased this book. Mt professor highly recommend this book.

Financial statements are terrifying for most people. Usually, when they are passed around a meeting, everyone's eyes glaze over while they tune out the conversation. This book makes financial statements accessible by showing their logic and backing up the logic with practical, real-life examples.

This is a perfectly fine mystery thriller, but in a way, it suffers from how good it's predecessor was. The plot of this book was fairly predictable, although there were a few twists here and there. By the middle of the book, you pretty much knew who was who and what was what. That doesn't necessarily make it a bad read. My real complaint about the book is the characters seemed way underdeveloped. Part of it is that there are way to many of them, so none really get their fair due. The other is that in the first Decker novel, so much time is spent getting to know Decker's mind, and in this novel, you don't really get to know anybody. Each individual seems like they've been put in place to fill the archetypes needed for a mystery novel. I didn't really care about any of them, and I wasn't afraid for any of them. So, it's a fun read, but Baldacci has done much better. This novel felt more like a script. You almost needed actors to exude emotion, otherwise, everybody either felt like they had none, or they were cartoonish. I think it would make a better movie than book.

I ran across David Baldacci's book "The Hit", a Will Robie novel, while planning a trip to Florida. I don't read often because I rarely find an author that keeps my attention. I didn't have any issues with this author. I finished The Hit in 3 days, went to a local store and bought "Memory Man", the first of the Amos Decker books. I finished that in another 3 days. Half-way in I decided to order The Last Mile because I didn't want down time in between books. I can't put these things down. It's like Jason Bourne meets Criminal Minds (though Amos Decker is far from Jason Bourne). The writing is just captivating. Every time I finish a chapter and want to maybe put the book down, I just immediately start reading the next chapter. I love how he writes in short chapters because it's so much more enticing to say "let me read these next 6 pages" and the next thing you know you are 60 pages in and hooked. I'm going to read every one of his books because I'm sure I won't find one I don't enjoy.

I have read all of David Baldacci's books and this one is another winner. Amos Decker is such an unusual character that he completely fascinated me. After a head injury playing football, he can forget nothing which makes him an excellent detective. He is unusual in that he is obese, out of shape and socially awkward but a very likable character. The supporting characters were well developed and believable and the plot had so many twists that it made me dizzy. I couldn't put the book down and read it late into the night to see what surprise the next page would bring and was completely surprised by the ending. Loved it!I highly recommend this book even if you haven't read the first book in the series, "Memory Man," as this one can stand alone. I'll be ordering book 3 for my Kindle now.

Excellent history and sense of where we are as a nation and what we need to do to return to common sense and our Constitutional liberties. This book states its case very clearly with lots of info.

As some other reviewers have mentioned- this is not one of this author's best work. Liked the main character and plot was somewhat believable, but just didn't have that special adventure. I sometimes wonder if these talented authors sometimes use other writers to write parts of the story. Like James Patterson, who just writes for the money in my estimation and whoi won't read anymore.

A dark reality exists in our world, and that is the fact any time a human or government wishes to impose its view of what would make a perfect society, millions end up suffering and dying. Murray does an incredible job showcasing the regimes, tyrants, philosophies, and inevitable consequences that have decimated entire populations in the desire to create in their mind, a utopia. furthermore, he awakens the reader to the very dangers within our own government and country and how we as citizens who have been blessed with Liberty must not stand idly by while elites look to take our freedoms away one regulation at a time. Worth the read. Recommending to anyone I can because of the truth inside the pages.

I believe Baldacci writes well, but too often. It is easy to create a premise that will draw readers in. It is more difficult to construct a series of believable events that explain the premise. This takes time and a good editor, neither of which are apparent in this book. For example, Baldacci has the protagonist sent to death row by his father who thinks this is the best way to protect him. In retrospect, the son would have been a high NFL draft choice and could have more hired more than sufficient security. Baldacci also has the son's car die right in front of a motel, but does not explain how this could be done--pre-Google. Then there is the house where a murder was committed that has sat untouched for twenty years. Perhaps Baldacci paid the property taxes so the house would not got to auction. If you read fast enough (Evelyn Wood x 10) that you don't notice the holes in the plot, you could enjoy this book. Last Mile proves that fast paced chapters do not necessarily make a good book.

I am usually a big fan of D. Baldacci's books but...not so much The Last Mile. I thought the main characters were well developed but the plot line did not ring true to me especially Lucinda. I am looking forward to Amos Decker and Melvin Mars coming together again.

The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane follows the life of Li-yan, a member of the Akha hill tribe whose way of life is still tied to the land. Growing up picking tea leaves each season with her family and living without electricity or running water in a hut made on bamboo stilts, Li-yan’s life is a far cry from the modern world of the late 1980’s. Set to follow in her mother’s path as a midwife, Li-yan struggles to accept her path and works hard in school hoping to be the first in her village to qualify for upper level schooling that would open up other possibilities. Fate however intervenes through two different men destined to change her life, one through love, the other through the business of tea, helping her village join the modern world. Years later, across the globe, a young Chinese girl adopted by Americans wonders at her roots and the special tea cake that was wrapped in her blankets when she was left at the orphanage. Who was her mother and what is the significance of this tea cake? Full disclaimer, I am a huge fan of Lisa See’s works so I was inclined to like this book from the start, however I can truly say this is my favorite of all her books so far. See seems to flex her writing muscles in the vivid descriptions of the lush environment of the Akha tribe, its dangers and simpler way of life. The reader is fully immersed in the beauty and culture of Li-yan’s world, experiencing her inner turmoil fighting her lot in life and then the culture shock she experiences later in the city. As with all of See’s stories, there is a bittersweet quality to Li-yan’s story and the highs are magnified and all the more precious because of the lows. I enjoyed the surprising treat of a love story that developed from this and the way the characters bonded through their losses. See writes with a depth of character and setting that allows the reader to truly inhabit the story and, like the huigan or returning flavor of the teas in this book, the story is one to be savored long after it ends.Disclaimer: I received an ARC of this story from the publisher on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Lisa See is an Amazing story teller. This book is well researched and extremely enjoyable. I have a daughter adopted from the Kunming Welfare Institute, Yunnan Province, China. She was born in October 1994 and we adopted her in May of 1995 about the same time and setting as this book. Our daughter is thought to be of one of the minority groups so I found the book extremely interesting. The book shed light on the lives of the Akha people, a minority group living in Yunnan Province in Southwestern China. In 1995 they lived in thatch type homes without electricity or running water. There were few motorized vehicles in their remote area. They scraped out a living picking and selling tea leaves. The story delves into the effect that superstition and China's One Child Policy had on the lives of the Akha tribe and the country of China as a whole. It follows the path of a young Akha girl and her struggle for existence. I will not say more because this is a book you must read to appreciate.Thank you Lisa for giving us the gift of this wonderful book!

Lisa See's novel was a fast read because I was rooting for the happiness of the main character, Li-Yan, raised in a ritualistic, indigenous culture that becomes both a hindrance and a blessing. A compelling story of a mother and her infant daughter separated by cultural necessity, "The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane" spans the polar worlds of the Akha, one of China's ethnic minorities who work the tea plantations in the Yunnan Province of China, and the newly rich, jet-setting Chinese entrepreneurs, living in California's upscale San Gabriel Valley. The plot is predictable -given the quotation at the beginning of the novel about coincidence and storytelling -but still engaging and at times riveting. As a bonus, I learned about the highly profitable tea and coffee industries in China, Chinese history after the Cultural Revolution, the plight of ethnic minorities in China, and the explosion of Chinese billionaires. I am not a tea drinker, but I sure wanted to pour a cup of Pu'er and sip it as I read this fascinating tale of the strength of a mother-daughter bond. The little tea leaf does not fall far from the ancient mother tree.

This novel does what no other book I have read does: It is 75 percent (or so) fiction and 25 percent (or so) nonfiction. And it works! The story focuses on a Li-yan, a young Chinese woman from the minority Akha tribe in the mountains of Yunnan Province. She violates the Akha cultural taboos in several significant ways, including having a baby before she is married and then later marrying the baby's father of whom her family disapproves. But it is too late. Li-yan had to give up her daughter for adoption. Will she ever find her?But in addition to a haunting and riveting story that is grounded in solid character development, this book is packed with fascinating information about the history of tea and teamaking in China—and will no doubt make you crave a cup of hot tea. This is not always an easy book to read. Parts of the story are absolutely horrific to our Western ideas of what is right and wrong. But every piece of it is important and contributes to the story. Bonus: The ending is really good!Author Lisa See magnificently captures the angst, anger and emotional churning of a mother who feels forced to give up a child for adoption, as well as the feelings of angst, anger and emotional churning endured by the child who always wonders about her birth parents. It is gripping and endearing…and one you will remember long after it ends.

This is See's best book yet. Brilliantly researched. How she manages to make a book basicallyabout ten and the people who grow it interesting is a miracle. The characters are alive, real andworth investing in. I really liked this book a lot

I am working my way through a series of books by Larry Crabb. The most recent one I read was entitled The Pressure's Off, which was a really good book. Becoming a True Spiritual Community (1999) was the next on the list. I figured it would not be much different from other books I have read recently and that I would likely enjoy it. Having said that, I was profoundly moved by this book. The message contained in this book was exciting and fear provoking. Crabb discusses his vision for what he thinks true spiritual community (i.e., church) could look like. It is exciting because I can taste his vision for community where it is safe to be broken and to remind one another of Christ's forgiveness on a deep spiritual level. Its fear provoking because I have a hard time imagining how to get into this type of community. As a typically proud, independent American male, I am less inclined to open myself to others for true spiritual friendship, laying my thoughts and emotions out to be seen. But as I said, I can taste it, and I would like to see it work.As a psychologist, I think one of the things I most appreciated about this book was his vision for what Christian psychology, or soul care, may look like. He believes that the community of the church should be the primary place for healing to take place and I think he is exactly right. On page 178, he wrote, "In the middle of the wild ocean of shattered dreams and broken lives, the community of Christ celebrates God's forgiveness: they believe in what each other could become, they never minimize sin but they love to maximize grace. They are carriers of Christ to each other. That's what spiritual friends do when they act together to journey to God."I would highly recommend this book. I know that there are those who have had negative reviews of this book, but I have a hard time seeing why. If you are one of those people, I would hope that you would be able to dialog about it in spiritual community.

As it has often been the case, it is so again... I have fallen "head over heels" with the vision that is portrayed in this book, Becoming a True Spiritual Community. Over the past few years there has been something almost providential in the way books have come up on my "radar." The timing of where my thoughts and passions are running and the intersection of the subject matter of the book when it falls into my hands has occurred on more occasions than I can attribute to sheer coincidence. It is the case again with this book by Larry Crabb. For forty years I have had an on-again-off-again relationship with the Christian Church that exists in North America. My primary experience has been with Protestant Evangelicalism, but my knowledge of the Christian church has extended beyond the boundaries of that circle in the most recent decade. What I have experienced in my forty years of churchianity has not been what I would describe as good and that experience of "not good" resulted in seasons where I danced intimately with the church and other seasons where there was no relationship at all. I accept the responsibility that is mine where my heart and my attitude were incompatible with the Christian church, but I can't help but think if the church were living up to the organism it is described in the Bible there may not have been the tension between us through the years... there may never have been a break in our relationship at all. I wonder...So, what is it about this book, Becoming a True Spiritual Community: A Profound Vision of What the Church Can Be, that I find so wonderfully endearing? Before I answer that, let me point out that this is a republication of a book formerly published under the name of The Safest Place on Earth. As far as I have been able to discern, the books are the same. Now, back to the question, what is it about this book?Becoming a True Spiritual Community ranks as one of the most honest assessments and characterizations of the American church that I have ever read. Saying this I must also clarify that there is no "church bashing" or vitriolic rhetoric that demeans the church. The words are honest and written from an attitude of love for the church, but they are candid, blunt, and revealing. As Crabb reveals some of the shallow façade supporting the contemporary church he does so with painfully honest self-examination that draws the reader into journeying inward to make similar examinations of their own spirituality... sometimes exposing our own shallowness, pride, ego, and selfish desires. This process of exposing and examination continues through part one and into part two of the book before the tide begins to turn and the hopeful beauty of the church and spiritual community that God desires for us is revealed. There are allusions to this hope in the first half of the book, but the crescendo builds to a gloriously hopeful ending beginning at the halfway mark around chapter nine. The book is full of personal anecdotes and many metaphors gleaned from classic and contemporary literature from the disciplines of spiritual formation. There is also a very thorough discussion guide at the end of the book that would prove itself invaluable for a group study.I cannot say enough good things about this book. I'm sure timing has much to do with my excitement, but I also know that my desire for spiritual community as described by Dr. Crabb has been my passion for at least twenty-five years. I am reinvigorated and encouraged by what was written in this book and will recommend it as one of the top reads concerning the study of ecclesiology (the Church). I look forward to sharing the thoughts contained in this book with others and being a part of the communities that will be formed out of those discussions.

This book is written about community, but I found the thing that drew me in was his discussion about "animal and diabolical". This discussion is based on the evil that is found in humans. Some would be "animal" behavior, meaning things that everyone - even non-christians - sees as evil or "wrong", "bad", or "destructive". And then there is "diabolical" - the things that are common Christian behavior that is not easily recognizable as bad for us. Like being so busy that you neglect your children or mate, or being so passive that evil can exist, or other things that Christians would fight to the death as being okay in the name of "obedience to God" or "fulfilling what God has commanded" but they never will take a look at what their lifestyle is doing to others or the face of God it is presenting. Definitely something to take a look at. There is A LOT of diabolical going on in my life and in churches today! Take a look!

but it would certainly be worth the effort. The thing is, it would require quite a bit of effort; and I haven't met a lot of people who would be willing to do the work to make this happen. The good news is that there are some people who are willing and that's enough to start. The truth is, that it's just too easy to keep doing things the way they've always been done. Perhaps that's not entirely true. Church is work no matter how you do it, so why not do it right? And what Dr. Crabb provides here, is indeed the framework to do it right. The only thing necessary is hungry hearts. So if you have one of those, get this book and read it.By the way, this is exactly the same book as "The Safest Place On Earth" with a different cover. I do think this is a better title and more clearly reflects what this book is about. I have both books and even the page numbers are the same.

What you should keep in mind when buying second readers like this is that they are made up of fairly easy words. So the episodes that are taken from are somewhat simplified. These words are appropriate for kindergarten or first grade kids depending on where they are in the learning to read process. If you want readers that more closely follow that episodes of the shows, 3rd readers with more complicated words and a longer story will be a better fit. These books are perfect to get reluctant readers, they help by using something kids already love. This is not really the type of book you'd sit down and read to your kids, but if it starts to spark an interest in reading early, it could work that way as well.So if you have a new reader that loves Umizoomi, try this book. It just might spark a real interest in reading in the future.

Great book, this is based on the story when Door Mouse gets accidentally sent to space. Episode was a big hit with my daughter so the book will be too. This is about 30+ pagesIt's a paperback not a hardcover, but not any different the other Step into Reading Books that are also paperbacks. There's previous review on here from another customer that stated this book feels like a magazine?? I beg to differ. The pages are standard book pages, not flimsy like they say. Maybe they should stick to thick board books. We have over 10+ step into reading books, they've lasted for a couple years without any issues. You will get the occasional loose page, but that happens over time.Unless you're running this book over with a car or throwing into the rain, it should last for a while.Great buy! A++++

My 3yr old is crazy for this Show

My grandchildren love the series but did not engage with the book. They are so into video and I thought I could bridge the gap with a book about some of their favorite video characters, but it did not work. Maybe the timing was wrong and they had other things on their mind. The artwork was nice and I think the story might appeal to other kids.

My son loves this book he is a big umi fan ,i wished they hade more umizoomi products

Great story, but these books are not bound very well. I bought 4 step into reading books and within 1 week 2 of the 4 books had pages falling out or all of the pages fall out of the cover. Very disappointed!

My daughter loves Team Umizoomi and this book was a fun addition to her collection. I like that it follows the actual episode's script, and tells the same story, albeit in much smaller words, as it is geared for beginning readers. It is hard to find TU stuff, so this was an awesome surprise for her. We have read it a ton of times, as well as gone back to the episode.

My son loves the book, but very disappointed in the quality. After a week and a half the book has already fallen apart.
